Google Play does not use one fixed screenshot size for every listing. For general store-listing screenshots, each image must be JPEG or 24-bit PNG without transparency, measure 320–3840 pixels on each side, and have a longest side no more than twice the shortest. Device categories—including tablets, Wear OS, Android TV, Automotive OS and Android XR—have additional or different requirements, so check the relevant category in Play Console before exporting.
General Google Play screenshot size requirements
For a general store listing, Google’s baseline permits screenshots with each dimension between 320 and 3840 pixels. The aspect ratio is constrained as well: the longer dimension cannot exceed twice the shorter one. In practical terms, an image measuring 1080 × 1920 pixels fits the size and ratio limits, while a 1000 × 2400 image exceeds the 2:1 limit even though both dimensions fall within the pixel range.
- File format: JPEG or 24-bit PNG.
- Transparency: Do not use an alpha channel; screenshots should not have transparent backgrounds.
- Dimensions: Each side must be at least 320 px and no more than 3840 px for the general listing baseline.
- Aspect ratio: The longest side must be no more than twice the shortest.
- Listing coverage: Google says at least two screenshots across different device types are required to publish a store listing.
These are general upload rules, not a promise that one export will suit every device-specific listing or qualify for every store placement. Confirm the asset type and device category in Play Console before you prepare final files.
Requirements and recommendations by device category
Some categories have their own size, orientation, count or content rules. The table distinguishes category-specific requirements from guidance for eligibility in screenshot-based recommendation placements.

The four high-resolution app screenshots and three-game-screenshot figures relate to eligibility for screenshot-based recommendations; they should not be mistaken for the basic general upload minimum. Large-screen and XR dimensions likewise apply to their categories, not every Play listing.
How to choose an export size that fits
- Identify the target listing category. Decide whether you are preparing general phone screenshots, a tablet or Chromebook listing, Wear OS, TV, Automotive OS or XR assets. Category-specific requirements can supersede the general assumptions.
- Choose orientation and ratio. For general assets, keep the long side at most twice the short side. For recommendation-oriented app or game screenshots, use the stated 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portrait formats and minimum resolutions. For XR, use 8:5.
- Export in an accepted format. For general listing screenshots, use JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. XR accepts PNG or JPEG and limits each file to 8 MB. Wear OS guidance specifically calls for an opaque screenshot without masking.
- Check each file’s actual pixel dimensions. Do not rely on a design canvas label or device name alone: inspect the exported file. A correctly shaped mockup or preview can still export at a size outside the target range.
- Review the result in Play Console. The Asset Library can filter assets by aspect ratio and asset type, show dimensions, and crop an asset into a new copy. Check that the selected asset matches the intended device category and orientation before publishing.
What screenshots should show
Pixel compliance is only one part of a useful store listing. Google recommends showing the actual in-app or in-game experience, using screenshots that represent the current product and supported device platforms and orientations. For games seeking recommendation placements, the images should show actual gameplay. Avoid presenting a feature or interface state that the app does not currently offer.

- Use the screenshot to show a real screen or meaningful product workflow, not a generic promotional image in place of the experience.
- Keep added text minimal. If an image includes language-specific text, create separate versions for each language the app supports.
- Match the screenshot to the device and orientation it represents; a phone image should not imply a tablet layout that the app does not support.
- For Wear OS, do not add a watch frame, text or decorative background: the guidance calls for the app or watch-face interface alone.
Capture web-based product screens without a manual browser export

Common size and upload problems
- The image is rejected for dimensions. Check both pixel dimensions, not just resolution or file size. General assets must fall within 320–3840 px per side; device-specific categories can have different ranges.
- The image meets the pixel range but fails the aspect check. Compare the long side with twice the short side. Crop or export a new copy that brings the ratio within the allowed limit; do not assume an in-range width and height guarantee compliance.
- A recommendation placement is not available. Verify whether you meet the separate count, resolution, orientation and content guidance for apps or games. The general listing minimum alone does not establish eligibility for these placements.
- A Wear OS image looks like a promotional mockup. Use the interface itself in a square image at least 384 × 384 px. Remove the device frame, added text, graphics and background, and avoid transparency or masking.
- A large-screen asset is being checked against phone dimensions. Confirm that it is assigned to the tablet, Chromebook, TV, Automotive OS or XR category as applicable, then use that category’s requirements in Play Console.
- The screenshot is technically valid but misleading or outdated. Capture the current app experience on the relevant platform and orientation, and localize any language-specific text.
Keep the rules current
Google’s Play Console Help guidance is the authority for the current upload flow and category-specific checks. The documentation reviewed for this guide was accessed on September 29, 2026; its pages do not state publication dates. Because store asset rules can change, verify the applicable requirements in Play Console immediately before upload, especially for specialized device categories and recommendation eligibility.

Can I use the same screenshot size for every Google Play device category?
No. The general listing baseline differs from the requirements for categories such as Wear OS, Android TV, Automotive OS and XR. Select the relevant asset category and follow its current Play Console guidance.

Does meeting the general 320–3840 px rule qualify my app for screenshot recommendations?
Not by itself. Recommendation eligibility has separate screenshot count, resolution, orientation and—in games—content guidance.
Can I upload screenshots with transparent backgrounds?
The general guidance specifies JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. Wear OS guidance also says to avoid transparent backgrounds and masking.
