If Google Play services tops your Android battery report, that alone does not prove it is the cause. Google says the service itself does not make your battery drain faster; often, an app, account sync, location request, weak signal, or other activity that relies on it is behind the reading. Start by checking the pattern, then work through low-risk fixes before considering disruptive steps.
What Google Play services is—and what it is not
Google Play services is background system software used by Google features and many apps for functions such as sign-in, location integrations, security, and connections to Google services. It is not the Google Play Store, where you install and update apps. A Google Play system update is another, separate update channel. Google says Play services is included on certified Android devices and supported on Android 7.0 (API level 24) and later; actual manufacturer support can vary. Google explains Play services and its troubleshooting options.
Battery screens may also list Google Services Framework, the Google app, Android System Intelligence, or Android System separately. Those entries are not interchangeable with Google Play services.
Check whether the battery report points to a real, persistent problem
- Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage, or the closest equivalent on your phone.
- Check the reporting period and whether Google Play services is listed under foreground, background, or total use. Menu names and detail vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Compare a meaningful period—several hours or a full day—rather than reacting to a brief spike. Note whether the phone is hot while idle, loses unusually much charge overnight, or repeatedly wakes.
- Compare other entries, especially screen, cellular network, Maps, backup, fitness, wearable, VPN, messaging, or recently installed apps.
A percentage is a share of the battery use recorded during the selected period, not a direct measure of energy consumed. If you barely used the phone, a modest amount of background activity may account for a large share. Google also notes that Play services can exchange data over cellular several times a day, including while the phone is idle; the amount depends on Wi-Fi access, device and account settings, and connection behavior. On Pixel phones, Google documents Settings → Battery → Battery usage. Pixel 6 and later also have Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics → Battery draining too quickly. See Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting steps.
Try the low-risk fixes first
Restart the phone
Restart once, then observe battery use over a comparable period. This can clear a temporary stuck process, but it is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
Install available Android, system, and app updates
- Open Settings → System → Software update, or the manufacturer’s equivalent, and install any available Android update.
- Check the device’s security or system-update settings for Google Play system update, if offered.
- Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, and install pending app updates.

Check what may be keeping the phone or a dependent app active
- Location: Review apps allowed to access location all the time, including Maps location sharing, fitness apps, and wearable companions. Change permissions for a specific app only if its access is unnecessary.
- Sync and backup: Look for repeated Google Account sync, photo or file uploads, and email or messaging apps that poll frequently.
- Accessories and connections: Check whether a wearable, car, Bluetooth device, or smart-home app is repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting.
- Network: Compare behavior on reliable Wi-Fi or strong cellular signal. Weak reception, roaming, repeated network handoffs, hotspot use, or 5G can increase radio activity. If relevant, briefly test without a VPN, firewall, ad blocker, or custom private-DNS setting.
- Heat and heavy use: Do not compare a cool idle period with navigation, gaming, camera use, charging, or direct sunlight. Heat speeds battery drain and can damage the battery. Google’s battery guidance covers heat and device care.
A high Play services entry can reflect activity by a dependent app or the network rather than a fault in Play services itself. Avoid turning off location, sync, or background activity everywhere as a first response; that can interrupt features without identifying the source.

Update Google Play services from Android settings
On supported devices, Google documents this route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your profile picture or Google Account area, then All services.
- Under Privacy & security, tap System services.
- Select Google Play services and tap Update or Install, if an option appears.
Labels and availability differ across Android versions and manufacturers. If there is no update option, the service may already be current or your phone may manage updates differently. Do not sideload an APK from an unofficial site. Google’s system-services instructions explain available update controls; its Play services help page also covers troubleshooting.
Clear cache before considering stored data
Clearing temporary cache is a reasonable next step if the drain persists after the checks above. It may help if temporary local data is stuck, but it is not a guaranteed battery fix.

- Open Settings → Apps, then See all apps, App info, or the equivalent.
- Select Google Play services → Storage & cache → Clear cache.
- Restart and compare battery behavior over a similar period.
If the Play Store itself is also malfunctioning, separately open Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. The Store and Play services are different apps; clearing one does not clear the other. Google advises trying other troubleshooting before clearing Play services data. Use Safe Mode to check for a downloaded app
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. The entry method varies by manufacturer, so use the instructions for your phone model rather than relying on a universal button combination. Leave the phone idle or use it in a comparable way for a meaningful period, then check whether heat and battery loss continue.
- If the problem largely disappears, investigate apps installed or updated recently. Remove likely candidates one at a time, reboot normally, and retest.
- If it continues, look beyond downloaded apps to system software, signal conditions, battery health, or hardware.
A Safe Mode result is useful evidence, not absolute proof. Samsung recommends Safe Mode as a way to identify whether a downloaded app may be causing Galaxy battery problems. See Samsung’s battery and Safe Mode guidance.

Advanced steps: understand the risks first
Clear Google Play services storage or data
Do this only after updates, restart, cache clearing, and app-level diagnosis have failed. Back up important information and make sure you know your Google Account credentials. Google’s documented route is Settings → Apps → Google Play services → Storage & cache → Clear storage → Clear all data, then confirm Delete; labels vary by device.
Clearing data can remove information stored locally by Play services, including saved passwords, transit cards, COVID cards, and virtual payment cards saved to Google Pay. You may need to reauthenticate payment methods or sign in to your Google Account again on devices. A temporary improvement does not establish the root cause, and the drain can return if an app, account, or connection triggers it again. Google lists the possible effects of clearing Play services data.
Remove Play services updates only for a specific update problem
Some phones offer Settings → profile picture → All services → Privacy & security → System services → Google Play services → Remove updates, or an App info menu with Uninstall updates. The control is not available everywhere. Consider it only if the problem began immediately after a Play services update or the normal update process is malfunctioning, and you have reliable internet access to update again. A rollback can temporarily disrupt apps that depend on the service; do not block updates permanently. Google documents system-service update controls.

Do not disable Play services as a routine battery fix
Google says disabling Play services is not recommended. It is a core dependency, and disabling or restricting it can disrupt Google sign-in, notifications, location and Maps, payments, wearables, casting, nearby-device features, or other apps. Leave its battery setting at the system default unless a support technician gives device-specific instructions. Google warns about disabling Play services.
When the cause may be the phone, network, or battery
If the phone remains hot while idle, continues draining in Safe Mode, or the battery reading points more strongly to cellular radio, screen, another app, or Android System, treat Play services as a clue rather than a verdict. If the problem started after an update, record the phone model, Android version, Google Play system update date, Play services version if visible, and when the drain began; this helps manufacturer or carrier support assess whether the timing is meaningful for that build.
For a swollen battery, smoke, unusual odor, physical damage, or dangerously high heat, stop using and charging the phone and follow the manufacturer’s safety and service instructions. That is not routine software troubleshooting.
