When Google Play archives an app, Android removes its software, permissions, and temporary files, and stops its notifications—but keeps the app icon and personal data. Google Play Help puts it this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” You cannot open the app again until it is downloaded from its original app store. On restoration, the store normally installs the latest version compatible with your device and reapplies the saved data.

What happens when Google Play archives an app?

Archiving makes an app dormant while reclaiming much of the storage its installed software occupies. The icon remains in the launcher, usually dimmed with an archive or cloud symbol, but the app cannot run until it is downloaded again. The process is designed to free space without removing the app from your device in the same way as a full uninstall.

The result has three parts: the installable app software and temporary files are removed; personal app data stays; and the app stops operating in the background. The Android 15 developer API describes the operating-system-level action as removing the APK and cached files while persisting user data. Google Play’s earlier archive implementation uses an archived stub to keep the app’s launcher presence and a route to restore it.

Google Play product managers Lidia Gaymond and Vicki Amin introduced app archiving on 8 March 2022. They wrote: “Archiving is a new functionality that will allow users to reclaim ~60% of app storage temporarily by removing parts of the app rather than uninstalling it completely. An archived app will remain on the device and can easily be restored to the latest available compatible version, whilst preserving the user data.” That approximately 60% figure is Google’s published planning figure, not a guaranteed saving for every app.

Does archiving an app delete my data?

No. Archiving is intended to retain the app’s personal data, including locally stored settings, progress, and login or session material. The app’s executable software is removed, but its preserved data is applied again when you restore it.

That distinction does not make every kind of account state permanent. A token may expire while the app is archived, and an app that stores information only in memory or on a server may behave differently from one that saves it locally. Android Police reported in 2026 that a reporter did not have to log in again after restoring an archived app; that is a reported outcome, not a guarantee for every app or session.

Permissions are removed while an app is archived. Android Police also reported that the restored app did not trigger a new permission-approval flow in its reported case, but Google’s user-facing Help does not promise that permissions will always be silently restored. Check an app’s permissions after restoring it if access to location, photos, or another protected feature matters.

Will I still get notifications from an archived app?

No. Google’s stated behavior is that archiving stops notifications. Because the app’s runnable software and permissions are removed, it cannot run in the background or post new alerts while archived.

This is different from notification preferences. Android Police reported in 2026 that notification category preferences survived an archive-and-restore on a Pixel; Google Help does not establish that behavior as a guarantee across devices and apps. Widgets are also a separate consideration: GIGA reported in 2026 that widgets for archived apps may stop working and can be removed or greyed out until restoration.

Do archived apps still update?

An archived app does not run its own updater while it is archived. Google’s published rule is that it can be restored to the latest available compatible version while preserving user data. In practice, restoration downloads the compatible build offered by the original store at that time, rather than simply making the removed, old app software runnable again.

Google has not published a user-facing rule saying that Play silently refreshes an archived app’s stub in the background before you tap to restore it. Treat the restore action as the point at which the app software is downloaded. If the developer has removed the app or it no longer supports your device, the old icon may remain even though restoration is unavailable.

How is archiving different from uninstalling, hibernation, or clearing data?

These Android actions affect different parts of an app. Use the comparison below to choose the one that matches your goal; “hibernation” here means Android’s unused-app handling, including the “Manage app if unused” setting.

Action Storage recovered Personal data and logins Notifications Can open immediately? Network needed to resume? What happens to the app version?
Archive Most app software is removed; Google cites about 60% as a planning figure Kept on the device Stopped No; restore first Yes Restore normally downloads the latest compatible version from the original store
Uninstall App and local app data are removed Removed unless separately saved or synced to a cloud account Gone with the app No; install and set up again Yes, to download the app A new install downloads the version currently available from the store
Unused-app hibernation / “Manage app if unused” Temporary files may be deleted; the app remains installed Kept Stopped Yes, after unpausing if needed No, to resume the installed app The installed app remains; hibernation itself is not a reinstall
Clear data App data and cache are cleared, but the app remains installed Wiped from the device; expect a fresh setup unless data is restored separately The app remains installed Yes, as a fresh app setup No, not to open the installed app The installed version does not change just because data is cleared

Choose archive when you want to recover space but keep the app’s local data and a visible shortcut. Choose uninstall when you want the app and its local data gone. Clearing data is closer to resetting the app than removing it. Hibernation is the least disruptive option when you want the installed software to remain available but want Android to restrict an app you have not used for a long time.

How does unused-app hibernation differ from archiving?

Android’s unused-app behavior can delete temporary files, stop an unused app from running in the background, and stop its notifications without necessarily removing the installed APK. In Android 15, the “Manage app if unused” setting can also allow the OS to remove permissions and, after a long idle period, archive the app. That per-app setting and Play Store’s automatic archive option are related but distinct controls.

Android Authority reported in 2024 that the Android 15 unused-app path can progress from removing permissions and temporary files to archiving after extended inactivity. An app that has only been hibernated can still be opened after unpausing; an app that has been archived needs its software downloaded again.

How do I archive or restore an app on Android?

Manual archiving through Settings is available on Android 15 and later on supported devices, though the exact menus depend on the manufacturer. Restoring requires an internet connection and the original app store to be present, with the app still available to download.

Archive one app manually

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app you want to archive.
  3. Tap Archive. On some devices, you may instead reach the app information page by long-pressing its launcher icon and choosing App info.

The app icon should remain dimmed, with an archive or cloud overlay. If you do not see an Archive option, your Android version or device may not support the Settings flow, or the app may not be eligible. Google advises checking the Android version and contacting the device manufacturer when the control is unavailable.

Restore an archived app

  1. Tap the faded, archived icon in the home screen or app drawer. You can also open the app’s information page in Settings or its details page in Play Store.
  2. Allow the original store to download and install the app. Use Wi-Fi or mobile data; restoration needs a network connection.
  3. Open the app after installation and check that its saved content, permissions, and account access are as expected.

If there is not enough free space, Android may ask you to manage storage before continuing. If the app icon has disappeared, it may have been deleted rather than archived. Restoration also cannot proceed if the original store is missing or the app is no longer available to download. Android Police reported restoring an app of about 400 MB in under 30 seconds on decent Wi-Fi; that is one reporter’s timing, not a download-speed specification or promise.

How do I turn on automatic app archiving?

Automatic archiving is opt-in. In Google Play Store, open profile icon > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps and turn the setting on. When storage is low, Play can archive eligible apps that are used infrequently; their icons and personal data remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google introduced the feature for users who run into a full-storage install, offering them the option to enable automatic archiving. Product managers Chang Liu and Lidia Gaymond wrote on 10 April 2023: “Once a user opts in, auto-archive can help them automatically free up to nearly 60% of an app’s storage space, without removing the app presence or users’ data from the device.” This is an upper planning figure from Google, not a guaranteed amount for an individual app.

Google says Play auto-archive is available only for developers who publish using Android App Bundle. TechWiser describes the Play feature as available on Android 10 and later for eligible Play-installed apps. Automatic archiving can therefore be unavailable for an app distributed in another way, even if your phone supports Android’s newer OS-level archive feature. If a connection is metered or you rely on an app offline, consider that restoring an automatically archived app requires a download.

Keep one app out of automatic archiving

  1. Open Settings > Apps and select the app.
  2. Turn off Manage app if unused.

This setting prevents the selected app from being treated as unused for the relevant automatic behavior; it does not prevent you from archiving the app manually. Android Central notes that the control may be on in Android 15 even when Play Store’s overall automatic-archive switch is off. Turning automatic archiving off also does not automatically restore apps that were already archived.

Why is my app grey with a cloud icon?

A dimmed app icon with an archive or cloud overlay usually indicates that the app has been archived, so its software needs to be downloaded before it can open. Tap the icon to start restoration. If that does not work, check whether the phone has internet access and enough free storage, and whether the app is still listed in the store that originally installed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume every disabled-looking icon is an archive marker: the visual appearance can vary by launcher and device. If the icon is absent altogether, the app may have been uninstalled or removed from the home screen rather than archived.

Which apps can’t be archived, and why might restore fail?

Eligibility depends on the app, the Android version, and the store that installed it. Preinstalled system apps and core components often do not offer an Archive button; examples cited by MakeUseOf include Chrome, WebView, and Camera. Some user-installed apps, including certain Google apps such as Keep, may be archivable, so the publisher’s identity alone does not determine eligibility.

Play Store’s original archive system was tied to Android App Bundle distribution. Android 15 added OS-level archiving through PackageInstaller.requestArchive and a corresponding unarchive request, allowing participating stores to support the process and expanding it to APK-distributed apps. The store of record still matters: the system routes the restore request to the installer that installed the app, and another store must implement archive and restore support for its own apps.

As of October 2026, Android’s Registered App Stores program requires participating stores to support archiving and restoration on appropriate Android versions and let users turn the feature on or off. That does not make every store or every app eligible. The practical failure conditions are:

  • No network: the app software cannot be downloaded until Wi-Fi or mobile data is available.
  • Insufficient storage: free space must be made available before the download and installation can complete.
  • Missing original store: restoration depends on the installer of record being present and able to handle the request.
  • Unavailable app listing: if the developer has pulled the app or the current listing does not support the device, its old icon cannot provide a usable download.
  • Unsupported app or device: system apps may not expose an archive control, and Settings placement varies across manufacturers.

How much storage does archiving actually save?

The amount varies considerably by app, and Google’s approximately 60% figure should be read as a published estimate rather than a floor, cap, or universal average. Individual measurements reported by Android Authority in 2024 and MakeUseOf in 2026 illustrate why one percentage cannot predict another app’s result.

MakeUseOf described 50–80% as typical savings, but its individual examples include results above that range. The useful estimate for your own phone is the app’s actual storage footprint and the result Android reports when it archives that app.

Why are there two kinds of Android app archiving?

“Google Play archiving” can refer to Play’s older store-managed method or Android 15’s operating-system-level archive API. Both aim to remove app software while preserving data and a launcher presence, but they differ in who can initiate and support the operation.

  • Play-managed archived APKs: Introduced in 2022, this approach uses a small archived APK in place of the app’s base APK. It depends on App Bundle publishing and lets Play restore the app, including on Android versions before Android 15.
  • Android 15 OS archiving: The OS-level API removes the APK and cached files while preserving user data. Settings can expose an Archive action, and the unarchive request is sent to the app’s installer of record; stores other than Play can support the feature.

Android 15 added the system-level route in 2024, but the Settings action is manufacturer-dependent. Samsung One UI 7 is among the interfaces reported to add it; the exact screen and availability are not uniform across Android devices. The shared icon treatment can make the two implementations look similar even though their underlying support differs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an archived Android app without Wi-Fi?

Only if you have another working internet connection, such as mobile data, to download it. If the app is important for offline travel or emergencies, restore it before you lose connectivity.

Will disabling automatic archiving bring my archived apps back?

No. The toggle controls future automatic archiving; it does not reinstall apps that are already archived. Restore each one from its icon or store listing.

Can I archive an app installed from an APK file?

Android 15’s OS-level archiving can support APK-installed apps when the relevant installer supports archive and restore. Play Store’s older auto-archive feature is limited to eligible apps published through Android App Bundle.

Does archiving an app remove its home-screen shortcut?

Usually the launcher keeps an icon and marks it as archived, rather than removing it. If the icon is missing, check the app list or store before assuming that it was archived.
