Google Pixel 8 and newer phones have the clearest long-term support guarantee. Google promises seven years of Android operating-system upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops, counted from each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Motorola support is decided model by model and can vary by country, carrier and sales channel. Motorola Signature is a current exception: Motorola’s US support listing shows security updates through June 2032, with at least bi-monthly maintenance releases, but Motorola describes that schedule as a current plan rather than a commitment.

If you want a phone you can buy today and still expect to be covered in five years, start with a Pixel 8 or later. Consider a Motorola only after checking the support entry for the exact model and market.

Pixel versus Motorola software support at a glance

Question Google Pixel Motorola
Longest clearly published coverage Seven years for Pixel 8 and every newer listed generation Model-specific; Motorola Signature is listed through June 2032 for security updates in the United States
What is covered Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops for Pixel 8 and later Depends on the product page. The Signature listing specifies security maintenance; do not assume the same package for every Moto G, Edge or Razr
How the period is dated From the device’s first availability on the US Google Store By the support schedule for the exact product, with timing potentially affected by region, carrier and channel
Published cadence The seven-year policy does not state a fixed release interval; it includes ongoing Feature Drops Motorola Signature is listed with at least bi-monthly security maintenance releases
Regional and carrier variation The headline seven-year rule is defined against US Google Store availability; other sales arrangements can still affect delivery timing Motorola explicitly warns that schedules can vary by third parties, regions, products and channels
Nature of the statement Google presents seven years as a support promise Motorola says its published information is a current plan, not a commitment or obligation, and reserves the right to change release content and timing

This is a comparison of published policies, not a claim that every Motorola update is late or that every Pixel update arrives simultaneously worldwide. The practical difference is how much work the buyer must do to establish the phone’s support horizon.

How long Google Pixel phones receive updates

Pixel 8 and newer: seven years

Google’s current support policy gives seven years of Android OS and security updates to the Pixel 8 and subsequent listed generations. The covered list includes Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, the Pixel 9 family, Pixel 9a, the Pixel 10 family, Pixel 10a and the Pixel 11 family. The clock starts when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US, rather than when you personally activate it or when a retailer sells it.

Seven years is a support window, not a guarantee that every model will receive a new Android version on the same day as every other Pixel. It does establish that Google intends to keep delivering the covered classes of software for the full period. A phone bought several years after launch therefore has fewer remaining years than a brand-new unit of the same model.

What Google says the seven years include

Google defines the commitment as three related forms of support:

  • Android operating-system upgrades: major Android version updates released during the covered period.
  • Security updates: patches intended to address security vulnerabilities.
  • Feature Drops: Google’s continuing additions and improvements delivered as part of the Pixel software program.

Google announced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro policy on October 4, 2023, stating: “We’re committing to providing seven years of software support for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops.” The policy now applies to the newer Pixel generations listed above as well.

Parts availability matters for the seven-year plan

Software support is more useful when the phone can be repaired. In the same 2023 announcement, Google said parts for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro would be available for seven years to match the software commitment. That statement concerns those two models specifically; it should not be read as a universal parts promise for every Pixel generation or every country.

Older Pixel models have a shorter, but still defined, term

Google’s five-year policy applies to Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a and the original Pixel Fold. As with the seven-year group, the five years are counted from first availability on the US Google Store.

Google Pixel 8 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Advanced Pixel Camera, 24-Hour Battery, and Powerful Security - Obsidian - 128 GB
  • Pixel 8 is the helpful phone engineered by Google; the new Google Tensor G3 chip is custom-designed with Google AI for cutting-edge photo and video features and smarter ways to help[1]
  • Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Google Pixel 8 has a fully upgraded camera with advanced image processing to reveal vivid colors and striking details; and now with Macro Focus, even the smallest subjects can become spectacular images
  • The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 Actua display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[3,4]
  • Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[5]; and it charges faster than ever[6]

This distinction is important when buying an older Pixel at a discount. A Pixel 7 is not automatically covered for five years from the day you buy it; part of that period has already elapsed. Check the original US availability date and subtract it from the current date to estimate the remaining window. The five-year rule covers both OS and security updates for the listed models, but it is a different promise from the seven-year Pixel 8-and-later policy.

Why Motorola support is harder to generalize

Every model needs its own check

Motorola does not publish one portfolio-wide term that can be applied to all of its phones. Its support pages are organized around individual products, and the expected schedule can depend on the country, carrier and channel through which the phone is sold. A long schedule for one Motorola model therefore says nothing conclusive about another model in the Moto G, Edge or Razr lines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why the question “Does Motorola still update phones?” has no single year-based answer. Motorola does issue software and security releases, but the duration, cadence and included Android upgrades must be established from the exact product listing.

Motorola Signature is a notable current exception

Motorola lists Motorola Signature as launching in January 2026. Its US support information shows security updates stopping in June 2032 and lists at least bi-monthly security maintenance releases. That end date creates a potentially long support horizon for this particular model.

The date is not a blanket Motorola guarantee. Motorola’s own support language says the information communicated is “not a commitment or an obligation of Motorola Mobility.” It also says Motorola reserves the right to change the content and timing of any software release without further notification. The company warns that schedules can vary by third parties, regions, products and channels. Before buying a Signature outside the United States, confirm that your country and carrier show the same end date and cadence.

Are Motorola updates slower or less reliable?

Published policy can show predictability, but it cannot prove that every update on one brand is faster than every update on another. Motorola’s caveats mean that the same nominal end date may not translate into identical delivery timing for every market or carrier. That is a reason to verify the listing, not proof that every Motorola release is delayed.

Pixel has the stronger portfolio-wide reliability story because Google gives buyers one readily identifiable rule for Pixel 8 and later: seven years from first US Google Store availability, covering OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. Motorola can be competitive on selected models, particularly Signature, but the buyer must identify the exact product and region and accept that Motorola characterizes the schedule as a plan that can change. This reliability conclusion is an inference from the manufacturers’ published policies, not a test of update speed.

How to verify a phone’s remaining support before you buy

  1. Write down the complete model name. Record the generation, size or variant, storage version if it changes the product listing, and whether it is a carrier edition. “Pixel 8” and “Pixel 8a” are separate entries; “Motorola Edge” is not specific enough.
  2. Identify the market and sales route. Note the country where you will use the phone and whether it comes directly from the manufacturer, a carrier or another retailer. Motorola specifically says these factors can affect the schedule.
  3. Find the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Do not substitute a page for a visually similar device or an earlier generation.
  4. Locate the stated end date and covered update types. Separate security updates from Android OS upgrades. A page that gives a security end date does not automatically promise the same date for major Android versions.
  5. Check the date anchor. For Pixel, calculate from first US Google Store availability, not your purchase date. For Motorola, use the date and conditions shown on the local product schedule.
  6. Read the caveats before treating the date as firm. Look for carrier, regional or channel qualifications and language describing the schedule as a plan rather than a commitment.
  7. Save a copy of the listing when you purchase. Support pages can be revised. Keeping the model name, market and stated date makes it easier to resolve a discrepancy later.

Which phone will still be supported in five years?

Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a and newer

A Pixel 8-or-later model is the straightforward answer when five-year coverage is the deciding requirement. The seven-year term leaves room for five years of use when the phone is bought near its launch, although a later purchase consumes part of the window. Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro also have Google’s stated seven-year parts availability announcement, which can improve the odds of keeping the hardware running, subject to local availability and repair conditions.

Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations

These phones can still be supported within their five-year terms, but their remaining coverage depends on their original US Google Store availability dates. A low purchase price may reflect a shorter remaining support period. Use the five-year rule and the launch date to calculate the balance before committing.

Motorola models

There is no safe five-year assumption for an unspecified Motorola phone. Motorola Signature has a US security end date in June 2032, but that schedule must be confirmed for your own country, carrier and exact variant. For other Motorola devices, the only reliable method is to inspect the model-specific support entry. If no clear end date or update scope is published for your market, treat the long-term outlook as uncertain rather than inferring it from another Motorola product.

What the support promise does—and does not—tell you

It does not promise perpetual performance

An operating-system update may require more storage, change interfaces or alter application behavior. A support term means the manufacturer intends to provide the defined software maintenance, not that the phone will feel identical throughout seven years or that every future feature will run on older hardware.

It does not erase carrier or regional differences

Google’s seven-year calculation is anchored to first US Google Store availability. Motorola explicitly identifies third parties, regions, products and channels as variables. A buyer importing a phone, using a carrier-branded edition or switching regions should verify local support rather than relying on a headline number from another market.

It does not make a security end date an OS-upgrade promise

Security maintenance and major Android upgrades are distinct categories. Pixel’s seven-year statement names both. Motorola Signature’s cited listing specifies security updates and a maintenance cadence; consult the exact page for any separate Android-version commitment.

Decision guide: choose by your priority

Choose Pixel 8 or newer for the clearest long-term guarantee

  • You want one policy that applies across a recognizable generation rather than a model-by-model investigation.
  • You need both Android OS upgrades and security updates stated together.
  • You expect to keep the phone for five years or more and want a support horizon that is easy to calculate.
  • Feature Drops are valuable to you in addition to major Android releases and security patches.

Choose Motorola Signature only after local verification

  • The exact Signature model is sold and supported in your country.
  • Your carrier’s listing agrees with the manufacturer’s stated June 2032 security end date.
  • You accept Motorola’s wording that the schedule is a current plan, not a binding commitment.
  • At least bi-monthly security maintenance is sufficient for your use case, and you have confirmed what Android OS upgrades are included.

Do not generalize from a single Motorola success

Signature’s schedule cannot be transferred to every Moto G, Edge or Razr. Treat each model as a separate purchase decision. If a retailer advertises a long support period without identifying the country, carrier edition and update types, locate the manufacturer’s corresponding support entry before paying.

Common buying mistakes

  • Counting from the purchase date: Pixel’s clock begins at first US Google Store availability, so a discounted older phone may have fewer years left than expected.
  • Confusing a family name with a model: Different Pixel suffixes and Motorola variants can have different schedules.
  • Assuming security and OS terms match: Confirm both categories separately, especially on Motorola.
  • Using a US date for another market: Motorola’s regional and channel caveats make this unsafe; verify the local listing.
  • Treating a plan as a contract: Motorola reserves the right to change release content and timing, so its published end date carries a different level of certainty from Google’s seven-year promise.
  • Equating support length with repairability everywhere: Google’s seven-year parts statement is specifically tied to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro; local parts and service access can still differ.

Bottom line for Pixel versus Motorola

For the longest and most predictable software-support policy, buy a Pixel 8 or newer. Google’s seven-year rule covers Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops and is easy to apply across the listed Pixel generations. Older Pixels have a defined five-year term, but the remaining time depends on their original US availability date.

Motorola remains a viable choice when a particular model meets your needs, and Motorola Signature is unusually competitive on paper with US security updates listed through June 2032 and at least bi-monthly maintenance. Its model-, region- and carrier-specific caveats mean you must verify the exact support page and should not treat the Signature schedule as representative of the entire Motorola range.
