For a practical balance of longer battery life and better privacy on a Google Pixel, keep Adaptive Battery enabled, reduce display use, review which apps can access sensitive permissions, and decide separately whether you want Google location and activity features. There is no universal battery-life gain for any single setting: the effect depends on your phone, apps, and use. Menu labels and availability can vary by Pixel model and Android version, so use Settings search if a path differs.
Which settings should you change first?
Start with changes that are low-friction and easy to reverse. The table describes the likely direction of each setting, not a guaranteed runtime result.
| Setting | Likely battery effect | Privacy or data effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization | Can limit background activity for less-used apps. | No direct privacy change established. | Background activity may be restricted; some notifications can be delayed. |
| Brightness, screen timeout, Always-on Display, Dark theme, live wallpaper, Smooth Display | Reducing display use can reduce battery use; Smooth Display uses more battery on supported models. | No direct privacy change established. | Dimmer or shorter-on display; less motion smoothness if Smooth Display is off. |
| App permissions | No general battery effect established; restricting background access may reduce activity in some cases. | Limits which apps can access location, camera, microphone, or other permissions. | Some app features may not work without the permission. |
| Device Location, Timeline, and Activity controls | Turning off location can reduce location use, but no universal saving is specified. | Controls device location access and Google account-level activity separately. | Maps, local results, or other location-based features may be affected. |
| Battery Saver | Reduces some power use by limiting functions. | No broad privacy effect established. | Most location uses and automatic syncing are turned off or limited, so updates and features can be delayed. |
Make the highest-value battery changes
Keep Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on. Adaptive Battery learns from recent use and can restrict background activity for apps you use less often. Google notes that extending battery life can reduce performance or delay notifications. After setting up a Pixel or factory-resetting it, optimization may take a few weeks to settle.
To check an app, open Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → App battery usage and review its background-use setting. Turning optimization off can let an app run more in the background and use more battery. Change this only when an app’s background behavior is important to you.

Reduce screen-on power use
The display is a useful place to start if you want straightforward changes. Google recommends lowering brightness, shortening screen timeout, considering Dark theme, and turning off Always-on Display and live wallpapers. A 30-second screen timeout is one example in Google’s guidance, not a requirement. Adaptive brightness can adjust the display automatically.
On supported models, Smooth Display raises the refresh rate for some content and uses more battery. Turn it off if you prefer battery conservation to smoother motion; Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. Dark theme and the other display settings may affect battery use differently depending on the device and what you view, so treat them as adjustments rather than fixed savings.
Use connectivity controls selectively
Turn off a hotspot or tethering when it is no longer needed. Google recommends Adaptive Connectivity on Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold; availability may be limited by some U.S. carriers. Find these options through Settings search if their location differs on your phone.

Battery Saver is useful when you need to stretch a low charge, but it changes how the phone behaves: most location uses and most automatic syncing are turned off or limited. Manually turning off location or account syncing can also degrade features that rely on them. Prefer targeted changes unless you are willing to trade timely updates or location-dependent functions for lower power use. See Google’s Pixel Battery Saver guidance for details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind the cause of unexpected battery drain
If battery life suddenly worsens, check usage before disabling multiple settings. Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage and look for apps or activity using an unusual share of power; labels and screens can vary. Review an app’s battery use individually rather than assuming that a privacy or connectivity switch will solve the problem.
Some extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software. If unusual drain continues beyond a few days, investigate app behavior and follow Google’s battery drain troubleshooting steps. Battery diagnostics are documented for Pixel 6 and later.

Review app permissions for privacy
Use Privacy Dashboard and Permission Manager
Privacy Dashboard shows recent permission access, while Permission Manager lets you review apps by permission type. Open Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Privacy dashboard to see recent access, or open Permission manager to review a category. The precise path can vary; search Settings for either name.
For location, camera, and microphone, grant only the access an app needs. Depending on the permission and app, choices can include all-the-time location, access only while using the app, asking each time, or no access. On Android 11 and later, unused-app settings can pause an app’s activity and permissions. Google’s Pixel app permissions guide explains the available controls.
Keep camera and microphone controls distinct from app permissions
Pixel privacy settings also include device-level camera and microphone access controls. These are separate from deciding which individual apps receive permission. If you disable a device-wide control, apps that otherwise have permission may be unable to use that sensor until you turn access back on. Find the controls in Settings search if needed.

Choose location and account activity deliberately
Device Location and Location Accuracy
Device Location controls whether apps and services that have permission can access the phone’s location. Turning it off can disable location-dependent features; Google notes that some local results and ads may still be based on your IP address. Location Accuracy is a separate setting that can combine wireless signals and sensors to estimate location more accurately.
To review location settings, search Settings for Location or go to Settings → Location. Decide whether the features you use justify device location being available, then review permissions for individual apps as well. Google’s Pixel location settings guide describes the controls.
Timeline, Location History, and Activity controls
Device Location is not the same as Google account activity or Timeline. Google’s current location help page says Timeline is off by default; when it is on, precise device location may be regularly saved to the device even when Google apps are not in use. Review Timeline and location history separately from the phone’s Device Location switch, and check Google Account Activity controls for other account-level choices.

Check lock-screen, advertising, and diagnostics settings
Pixel’s security and privacy settings also include lock-screen notification visibility, clipboard-access notices, Ads and advertising ID controls, and Usage & diagnostics. Review lock-screen visibility if you do not want message contents or other alerts displayed while the phone is locked. Advertising controls affect Google’s advertising identifiers and related controls, not every form of data collection by every app.
Usage & diagnostics is intended to share information with Google to help improve products and services. Google says turning it off does not affect information that apps themselves may collect. Treat it as one data-sharing choice, not a master switch for third-party apps. See Google’s Usage & diagnostics explanation and the broader Pixel security and privacy settings guide.
