The Pixel 8a can still be the smarter budget purchase if it is substantially cheaper and in good condition. If you already own a working Pixel 8a, there is no automatic reason to upgrade.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Pixel 9a if prices are close
For a new-phone buyer comparing similar-storage models in similar condition, the 9a is the stronger default. Its larger display gives you more screen area, Google advertises it as brighter, and its Tensor G4 is one generation newer than the 8a’s Tensor G3. Google also gives the 9a the higher battery estimate. Those are practical advantages, though the available comparison does not establish a controlled benchmark proving a particular speed gain.
Choose the Pixel 8a if it is meaningfully cheaper
The 8a remains a reasonable buy if a verified offer makes it materially less expensive, the phone is in good condition, and you are comfortable with its shorter remaining calendar support window. Check the exact storage, seller, warranty and return terms; a low price on a used or refurbished phone is not directly comparable with a new, warrantied 9a.

Keep your Pixel 8a if it still meets your needs
Both phones have a seven-year update commitment, but the clock starts at each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Since the 8a arrived first, the two models do not have identical support end dates. An 8a owner should weigh the actual upgrade cost after any trade-in against the specific benefit of a bigger, brighter display, newer chip generation or improved battery outlook—not upgrade just because a newer model exists.
What changes in everyday use?
Display: bigger and advertised brighter on the 9a
The Pixel 9a’s 6.3-inch screen is larger than the 8a’s 6.1-inch display. Google says the 9a is up to 2,700 nits and 35% brighter than the 8a. Treat those as Google’s advertised comparison, not a promise that every scene or setting will look 35% brighter in everyday use. If screen size and visibility are priorities, this is one of the clearest reasons to favor the 9a.
Performance: newer silicon, but no sourced head-to-head benchmark
The 9a uses Tensor G4 and the 8a uses Tensor G3. That identifies the newer generation, but it does not by itself quantify how much faster one phone feels in a particular app or task. No controlled, comparable performance benchmark is established here, so a precise speed advantage would be unsupported.
Battery: estimates favor the 9a
Google lists 30+ hours for the Pixel 9a and up to 24 hours for the Pixel 8a, based on estimated usage profiles. Those figures are not directly guaranteed results: Google notes that actual battery life varies according to usage and features. Android Central’s hands-on comparison also favored the 9a’s endurance, but your result will depend on how you use the phone.

Camera: more megapixels do not mean better photos
The 8a has a 64 MP main camera, compared with 48 MP on the 9a, but resolution alone does not determine image quality. In its comparison, Android Central reported that the 9a retained detail in most conditions and rendered color more realistically; it found the 8a slightly better for night photography and the 9a stronger for close-focus shots using its macro tools. Those are the publication’s review observations, not a guarantee for every scene.

Google announced both phones at a US launch price of $499, but in different years: the Pixel 8a was announced on May 7, 2024, while the Pixel 9a launched in 2025. Those historical launch prices do not tell you what either phone costs now. Current 2026 pricing, stock and trade-in offers were not verified, and offers can vary by region and seller.
Before deciding, compare the same storage capacity and account for condition, warranty, seller and any trade-in value. A refurbished 8a at a steep discount may offer better value than a new 9a for someone on a tight budget; at similar prices and conditions, the newer 9a is generally the more compelling purchase.
