The Google Pixel 3a is the better fit if you want a larger OLED screen, a headphone jack, or Google camera features such as Night Sight. Both are legacy phones now, so if you are buying used, the device’s condition and price matter as much as its original specifications.
Which iPhone SE does this comparison cover?
This is a comparison of the Google Pixel 3a (2019) and the iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020). Apple has released multiple iPhone SE generations with different hardware, so check that a used listing identifies the 2020 model. The specifications below come from Google and Apple; they are not results from a new head-to-head test.

Display, camera, and battery specifications do not establish which device looks better or lasts longer in everyday use. In particular, the two battery figures use unlike measures.
Which phone has the better screen and size?
The Pixel 3a gives you more viewing area: its 5.6-inch OLED panel has a higher listed resolution and pixel density than the SE’s 4.7-inch LCD. OLED and LCD are different display technologies, but specifications alone are not a visual-quality test.

The SE is the more compact option. Choose it if a smaller handset is more important than screen area; choose the Pixel if you would rather have a larger display for reading, browsing, or video.
Is the iPhone SE faster?
On paper, yes: the SE uses Apple’s A13 Bionic, while the Pixel 3a uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670. Android Central’s contemporary comparison also noted the SE’s performance advantage. No current, controlled benchmark comparison is established here, so there is no defensible score to quote or guarantee about how a particular used phone performs today.

If processor class and the stronger documented current software position are priorities, the SE is the more defensible pick. The Pixel remains a reasonable choice only if its screen, headphone jack, or Google camera features better match your needs and its condition and price make sense.
Does the Pixel 3a take better photos?
The Pixel’s camera feature set is notable for still photography: Google highlighted Night Sight and Super Res Zoom, alongside a 12.2 MP rear camera with optical and electronic stabilization. That makes the Pixel appealing if those specific features matter to you.

The SE has a 12 MP rear camera with optical stabilization and computational portrait features. Apple documents 4K recording at up to 60 frames per second, giving the SE the clearer advantage in the video specifications listed here. Megapixel counts do not settle photo quality, and there is no controlled side-by-side image test here to declare a universal still-photo winner.
Which phone has more useful extras?
- Pixel 3a: a 3.5 mm headphone jack for wired headphones, USB-C, and a rear fingerprint sensor.
- iPhone SE (2020): Touch ID in the home button, Qi wireless charging, and an IP67 water-resistance rating.
These are different conveniences rather than interchangeable upgrades. If you rely on wired headphones without an adapter, the Pixel has the built-in jack. If wireless charging or the SE’s water-resistance rating matters more, the iPhone has the listed advantage.

Which has better software support today?
The iPhone SE (2nd generation) is on Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list, consulted October 4, 2026. That is evidence of compatibility with iOS 26—not a promise of a particular number of future years or a specific future security-patch schedule.
Google’s 2019 launch announcement promised the Pixel 3a three years of operating-system and security updates. That original commitment period has elapsed. Google’s announcement does not, by itself, establish the exact date of the phone’s final patch.

How should you compare battery life?
Google lists a 3,000 mAh battery for the Pixel 3a. Apple’s specifications say the iPhone SE can deliver up to 13 hours of video playback or up to 8 hours of streamed video under Apple’s test method; Apple cautions that results vary with use and settings, and batteries have limited recharge cycles. These figures are not directly comparable, and they do not predict the runtime of an individual used handset.
For a used phone, battery condition can matter more than the original specification. Ask whether the battery has been replaced and, where the seller or device provides it, check its health before buying.
Which one is still worth buying used?
Either can suit a buyer with specific needs, but neither should be treated as an uncomplicated current new-budget-phone recommendation. The SE has the more favorable documented software position; the Pixel has a larger OLED display and a headphone jack. A low asking price does not make a device a good value if it is locked, incompatible with your network, or has a worn battery.
