For most screenshot collections, Google Photos is easier to manage. Its visual search, automatic organization, albums, and screenshot cleanup suggestions make a large, mostly reference-oriented library simple to browse. Google Drive is the better home when screenshots are evidence, source files, or work assets that must retain exact filenames, folder paths, and untouched pixels.
Neither service automatically gives screenshots a separate allowance. Personal Google Accounts have up to 15 GB shared by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, so the service that appears more convenient does not create extra capacity. The practical choice is whether you value visual discovery or file-level control, then keeping one canonical copy instead of maintaining parallel libraries.
The short answer: choose based on how you use screenshots
Use Google Photos when screenshots are visual references that you may need to find by subject, person, place, or theme. Photos can group items into albums, search their contents, and surface screenshots during storage cleanup. This reduces the manual filing work that becomes painful when a collection reaches hundreds or thousands of images.

Use Google Drive when a screenshot is part of a project record, support case, legal or compliance evidence, software documentation, or an editing/OCR workflow. Drive treats each image as a normal file, so its filename, extension, folder location, and predictable path remain central to how you work.

If your priority is strictly “which one uses less space,” there is no universal winner. A Drive upload is the file you provide. Photos can store an upload in Original quality or process it with Storage Saver, but Google does not publish a single screenshot-specific compression percentage or byte-per-image estimate. A Storage Saver copy may occupy less space, yet the result depends on the image and its processing; it is not a guaranteed reduction you can calculate in advance.
How Google Account storage is charged
One 15 GB pool covers all three services
A personal Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared across Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos, according to Google’s current support documentation (2026; the page’s publication date is not stated). Drive files and quota-counting Photos uploads draw from that same pool. Saving a screenshot in Photos instead of Drive therefore does not create a second 15 GB allowance.
Messages and attachments in Gmail can consume the same capacity. A large Drive archive or a long Photos backup can leave too little room for mail, and deleting screenshots may not solve a quota warning if other data is the larger consumer.
Photos quality settings change what is stored
Photos offers Original quality and Storage Saver (and, for some workflows, Express). Original quality keeps the uploaded representation and counts against account storage. Storage Saver changes the stored representation; Google has not published a universal percentage reduction for screenshots, so you should treat any saving as image-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Text-heavy screenshots are especially sensitive to processing. Small type, fine lines, and interface icons can look softer after conversion even when the image still appears acceptable at a glance. If a screenshot may later be enlarged, searched with OCR, or compared pixel by pixel, Original quality is the safer Photos setting.
Google’s stated policy exempts Photos items uploaded in Storage Saver or Express before June 1, 2021 from storage accounting. That historical exemption does not make new screenshots free, and it does not apply to a new upload merely because an older item in the same library is exempt.
What happens at the quota limit
When the account reaches its limit, new Drive uploads and Google Photos backups stop. Gmail can also be affected. Google says content may be removed after an account remains over quota for two years, with notice. Treat a full account as an operational problem: stop creating duplicate copies, identify the largest consumers, and recover space before relying on another backup.
Does Google Photos actually take less space than Drive?
Only a controlled comparison of your own screenshots can answer that for a particular collection. Drive stores the uploaded image file as a file. Photos Original quality also uses account storage for the uploaded representation. Photos Storage Saver may reduce the stored size, but there is no published, screenshot-specific conversion ratio and no promise that every image will shrink by the same amount.

Do not infer a saving from the thumbnail shown in the Photos app. A display preview is not a storage report. If space is the deciding factor, upload a representative sample in the quality you intend to use, then check the account’s storage details before converting an entire archive. Keep the test set separate from your production collection so you do not accidentally create two counted copies.

Set up Google Photos as a screenshot library
1. Decide whether Photos is appropriate
Photos is a good fit for screenshots you consult visually and can replace if deleted: recipes, travel details, product references, temporary error messages, or personal notes. It is less suitable as the only archive for files whose names, chain of custody, or exact binary content matter.
2. Select the backup quality before importing
- Open Google Photos settings and locate the backup or upload-quality control.
- Choose Original quality when text fidelity, later OCR, editing, or pixel comparison matters.
- Choose Storage Saver only after accepting that Photos changes the stored representation and that the amount saved is not published for screenshots.
- Apply the choice to a representative sample first. Inspect small text and thin lines at the zoom level you will actually need.
Changing the setting for future uploads does not automatically turn every existing item into a smaller copy. Review the options Photos presents for managing already backed-up items before starting a bulk conversion, and verify the resulting storage total.

Create albums for a bounded purpose, such as “Router setup,” “Tax receipts 2026,” or “App bug reports.” Albums provide a human-maintained layer on top of Photos search without requiring every filename to be perfect. Keep album names distinct enough that a search result is unambiguous, and archive or delete temporary screenshots when the project ends.

4. Search by what the image shows
Use the Photos search field with a subject, place, person, or theme rather than relying only on a filename. Automatic organization and AI-assisted discovery are useful when a screenshot has little descriptive text in its name. Results can still be imperfect, so retain an album or date convention for material that must be found reliably.
5. Run the storage manager regularly
In Photos’ storage-management area, review the categories it surfaces, including screenshots, blurry photos, and large videos. Open each candidate before deleting it: a blurry-looking image may be the only readable copy of a recovery code, and a screenshot may document a transaction you still need.
Photos deletions remain in Trash and are permanently deleted after 30 days. If you need the quota immediately, empty Trash after confirming that no item is required. Automatic deletion from Trash is not a substitute for a deliberate retention policy.
Set up Google Drive when file control matters
1. Design a folder and naming system first
Drive works best when a screenshot can be understood without opening it. A practical pattern is project/date_subject_status, for example router-setup/2026-10-20_login-error_original.png. Use a consistent date format, a short subject, and a status such as original, annotated, or redacted. Do not overwrite the original when an annotation is needed; save a clearly named derivative beside it.

2. Upload the files without converting them
- Open the destination folder in Google Drive.
- Select New, then File upload (or drag files into the folder).
- Wait for the upload indicator to finish before closing the tab or disconnecting the device.
- Open a sample file and confirm its extension, dimensions, and readability.
Drive’s file model avoids Photos quality conversion, but it does not validate that a screenshot is the correct version. If your operating system creates both a PNG and a converted JPEG, check for both before filing or deleting anything.
3. Use Drive’s storage view to find large files
Drive provides a storage view that lists files from largest to smallest. Sort there when the account is close to its limit, then inspect screenshots alongside other files. A few screen recordings or exported videos commonly outweigh thousands of small PNGs, so let the size list guide cleanup instead of assuming screenshots are the main cause.
4. Empty Drive trash deliberately
Deleting a Drive file moves it to Trash; quota recovery follows Google’s current deletion instructions. When space is urgently needed, review Trash and permanently delete items you no longer require. Confirm that shared or collaborative files are not needed by another person before removing them.

In Google Photos
- Search for screenshots or open the storage manager’s screenshot category.
- Filter the results by date or album when possible.
- Open any item that might contain a code, receipt, account detail, or work evidence.
- Delete only confirmed duplicates or disposable references.
- Empty Photos Trash if you need the space now; otherwise the item remains there for 30 days.
In Google Drive
- Use Drive search with the file type or a naming term such as
screenshot, and inspect the folders where captures are normally stored. - Switch to the storage view and sort largest to smallest to catch unusually large images or screen recordings.
- Compare dimensions, timestamps, and filenames before removing a near-duplicate.
- Delete the unwanted file, then follow Drive’s current Trash instructions to permanently remove it when appropriate.
A screenshot can be visually identical while having a different filename, metadata, or color profile. For evidence or archival work, compare the actual files rather than deleting by thumbnail alone.
Can you keep screenshots in both Photos and Drive?
You can, but it is easy to create two quota-counting copies. Google ended automatic two-way synchronization between the products. Google product managers Dan Schlosser and Jason Gupta explained on June 12, 2019: “Starting in July, new photos and videos from Drive won’t automatically show in Photos. Similarly, new photos and videos in Photos will not be added to the Photos folder in Drive.”
That separation prevents an automatic loop, but manually copying a screenshot still creates another stored item. Manually copied Original-quality items can count in both services, while both services continue drawing from the same account pool. Moving a file in Drive or adding it to a Photos album therefore does not, by itself, free quota.
A safer two-copy policy
- Choose one service as the canonical original.
- If the second service is needed for discovery or sharing, copy only a selected working set.
- Record which location is authoritative so an edited derivative does not replace the source accidentally.
- Periodically compare the second copy with the canonical library and remove stale duplicates.
Choose the right service for common screenshot scenarios

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Photos if visual search and low-effort cleanup matter more than filenames.
- Choose Drive if exact files, paths, naming, and untouched pixels are non-negotiable.
- Use Photos Original quality for text fidelity; use Storage Saver only after testing representative screenshots.
- Assume every new upload can consume the shared account quota unless Google’s policy explicitly exempts that item.
- Keep one canonical copy and label any secondary copy as temporary or derivative.
- Check Photos’ screenshot suggestions and Drive’s largest-file view before deleting manually.
- Empty the relevant trash only after verifying retention and recovery needs.
- When quota remains the constraint, review Gmail and other large files before uploading another batch.
Verdict
Google Photos is the easier everyday home for a screenshot collection because it emphasizes visual discovery, albums, and automated cleanup. Google Drive is the more dependable archive for exact files and organized project evidence. Photos may use less space in Storage Saver, but Google publishes no universal screenshot reduction, so the only safe space comparison is the storage result from your own sample. Whichever service you choose, use it as the canonical home and avoid manually maintaining a second full copy.
