If screenshots are filling Google Photos, first determine whether you need to reclaim Google Account cloud storage or only space on your phone. Google Accounts include 15 GB shared by Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive (Google, 2026). Deleting screenshots from Photos’ storage-management tool reduces that shared quota. By contrast, Free up space on this device removes backed-up local copies from the phone but does not delete those items from Google Photos.

The safest approach is to verify backup, export anything irreplaceable, review screenshots individually in Manage storage, delete only unwanted cloud copies, and then check the bin before it is emptied.

Why screenshots can make Google Photos storage full

A screenshot is an ordinary image file. If Google Photos backs it up, it counts toward the storage used by your Google Account. The allowance is not limited to Photos: every Google Account includes 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. Screenshots may therefore be only one part of the problem.

Google’s storage-management tool is designed to expose likely cleanup candidates. It specifically surfaces screenshots, blurry photos and large videos. That list is a starting point, not an automatic instruction to delete everything: screenshots can contain receipts, booking details, QR codes, work records, medical information or evidence you may need later.

First identify which storage is actually full

Open your Google Account storage breakdown and check the amounts attributed to Photos, Gmail and Drive. If Gmail attachments or Drive files consume most of the 15 GB, deleting screenshots alone will not solve the account warning. Make decisions using the account that shows the warning; phones often have more than one Google Account signed in.

Cloud quota versus phone storage

Google Photos has two separate cleanup actions with different consequences. Choose based on the result you need.

Action Primary goal What is removed Risk and availability
Manage storage deletion Reduce Google Account cloud usage The selected backed-up items from Google Photos Destructive cloud action; review each item and keep another copy of anything important
Free up space on this device Reclaim phone storage Local copies that Google confirms are backed up Backed-up items remain in Google Photos, but are no longer in the phone’s built-in gallery or available offline
Export before deleting Preserve an independent archive Creates a second copy on a computer or portable drive/SSD Requires storage and an additional verification step, but protects against account or deletion mistakes
Google One upgrade Add capacity without immediate deletion Nothing is deleted Paid option; plans and prices vary by country and can change

If the warning concerns your Google Account quota, use the first row. If the warning is the phone’s low-storage notification, use the second row. You can perform both, but they solve different problems.

Prepare before deleting screenshots

Confirm the correct account

In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and check the email address. Compare it with the account whose storage meter is full. Deleting from a different account will not reduce the quota that generated the warning.

Verify backup status

Do not use the device-cleanup command until Google Photos indicates that the items are backed up. Google’s help guidance says to ensure photos are backed up properly before using “Free up space.” A thumbnail visible on the phone is not, by itself, proof that the cloud copy is complete.

Create a second copy of irreplaceable files

For screenshots you cannot recreate, download or export them to a computer and copy them to a portable external drive or SSD. Open several files from that second location and confirm that they are readable before deleting the cloud originals. A second physical copy is useful if an account is locked, a file is deleted accidentally or the bin’s recovery window expires.

Classify screenshots instead of bulk-deleting

  • Keep: legal, financial, health, travel, work and identity records; one-time QR codes; instructions you still use.
  • Archive: items you rarely need but must retain. Export them first, then decide whether the cloud copy is necessary.
  • Delete: duplicate captures, expired tickets, temporary error messages and images you have verified are no longer useful.

How to reduce Google Photos cloud storage safely

This workflow targets the shared Google Account quota. Labels can vary slightly by Android, iPhone, web and app version, but look for the equivalent Manage storage controls in your current interface.

  1. Open the storage manager. In Google Photos, open the account or storage-management area and choose the category for screenshots. Google’s tool may also show blurry photos and large videos.
  2. Review every proposed item. Open a screenshot when its content is uncertain. Selection by category is a convenience, not a guarantee that an image is disposable.
  3. Check your independent copy. If an item is important, confirm that the exported file opens from your computer or portable drive/SSD before selecting it for deletion.
  4. Delete only confirmed unwanted screenshots. Use the delete command in the storage-management view. This is the step that can lower Google Account usage; merely removing a local copy from the phone does not.
  5. Open the bin. Google Photos sends deleted items to the bin according to its current rules. Review the bin and leave items there only while you are certain you will not need them.
  6. Allow the storage view to update, then recheck the account breakdown. Confirm that Photos usage changed and identify any remaining Gmail or Drive usage. If the account is still full, continue with those services rather than repeatedly deleting screenshots.

Google Photos describes the storage-management feature as a way to surface “blurry photos, screenshots and large videos” that you might want to delete. “Might want” is important: the tool recommends candidates, while you remain responsible for the decision.

How to free phone storage without deleting Google Photos items

Use this option when the handset itself is full and the screenshots are safely backed up. On Android, Google’s documented path is:

  1. Open Google Photos.
  2. Tap your profile photo.
  3. Choose Free up space on this device.
  4. Review the amount of device storage Google says can be reclaimed.
  5. Tap Free up [x] from device and confirm.

Google states that this feature “deletes photos from your device.” It does not remove the backed-up library from Google Photos. Afterward, the images remain viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com while you are signed in and online, but they may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery and will not be available offline from local storage.

Do not interpret the resulting empty or missing gallery thumbnails as cloud deletion. The command is intentionally device-only, provided backup was verified first. If you need an image without an internet connection, download a local copy again or keep selected files outside Google Photos.

Using an iPhone or a computer

The detailed documented path above is for Android. On an iPhone, app labels and the location of backup controls can differ; use the current Google Photos profile, backup and Manage storage controls shown in your version of the app. Confirm that the account reports backup completion before removing local files.

On a computer, work in the Google Photos web interface and open its storage-management view. The same distinction applies: deleting selected items from the cloud-management interface affects account quota, while removing a downloaded folder from your computer affects only that computer. Keep the original exported files until you have verified the cloud cleanup and your independent archive.

What to preserve before cloud deletion

Export screenshots that would be difficult or impossible to recreate. Examples include a payment confirmation, a one-time travel document, a message needed for a dispute, a serial number, a medical instruction or a work approval. Preserve the original image file rather than relying on a cropped or re-saved copy.

A practical arrangement is one working copy on your computer and one separate copy on a portable external drive or SSD. Label the archive with a date and broad subject, and open files from the external copy before deleting the cloud version. The drive is optional; the important principle is that the only remaining copy should not depend on the same Google Photos account you are cleaning.

Bin recovery and permanent deletion

Deleting a screenshot does not mean it is immediately beyond recovery: Google Photos documents recovery from the bin under its current retention rules. That protection is limited. Once the bin is emptied, or the applicable retention period passes, Google warns that items may be permanently unrecoverable.

Use the bin as a final review, not as an archive. If you discover that a needed screenshot was deleted, restore it while it is still eligible. If you intentionally want to reclaim quota, understand that leaving items in the bin may delay final removal under Google’s process; follow the current bin controls and warnings shown in your account.

If screenshots are not the main cause

Gmail is using the allowance

Large attachments and accumulated mail can consume the same 15 GB pool. Check Gmail’s storage contribution before deleting more Photos items. Removing a screenshot cannot reclaim space already occupied by mail.

Google Drive is using the allowance

Review large or obsolete Drive files and any account-level items shown in the storage breakdown. Apply the same export-and-verify rule to records you need before deleting them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need the files but cannot delete enough

Google lists Google One as the paid option for additional storage. Availability, plan sizes and prices vary by country and may change, so read the offer displayed for your account rather than relying on an old price. An upgrade increases capacity; it does not replace a backup strategy or make unwanted screenshots valuable.

Troubleshooting common mistakes

“I used Free up space, but my account is still full.”

That command removes local phone copies, not cloud items. Use Manage storage to review and delete unwanted backed-up screenshots, then inspect Gmail and Drive if the account total remains near 15 GB.

“My screenshots disappeared from the phone gallery.”

This is expected after device cleanup. Look in Google Photos while signed in and online. Restore or download a local copy only for files that must be available offline.

“The storage manager selected something I need.”

Cancel that selection, open the screenshot, and keep it or export it. Categories are suggestions; never confirm a bulk action without checking the contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I deleted an item by mistake.”

Open the bin promptly and use the restore control if the item is still eligible. Do not empty the bin until your review is complete.

“The storage warning names a different account.”

Switch to the account shown in the warning and repeat the storage check there. Photos can display media from one account while another account owns the storage quota you are trying to reduce.

A safe decision sequence

  1. Identify whether the shortage is on the phone or in the shared Google Account quota.
  2. Verify the account and confirm backup status.
  3. Export irreplaceable screenshots and verify a second copy.
  4. Use Manage storage for cloud-quota reduction; use Free up space on this device only for local phone storage.
  5. Review the bin and keep recovery in mind before permanent deletion.
  6. Recheck Photos, Gmail and Drive usage. If the files are needed and deletion is insufficient, evaluate the Google One capacity shown for your country.
