It can make a portrait look like a comic, sketch, anime image, or 3D animation, but it is best approached as playful experimentation: Google warns that results may be unexpected or inaccurate. The feature is available only to eligible users in supported regions.
What is Google Photos Remix?
Remix is a template-based generative AI feature in Google Photos’ Create tab. Choose a still photo and a style template, then generate a new image. Google introduced it on July 23, 2025, with examples including anime, comics, sketches, and 3D animation. The feature is distinct from Photo to video, which animates a still image, and Video Remix, which stylizes short videos. Google said Remix images could also be used with Photo to video to make an animated result.
Remix is designed to make trying a visual style simple, not to guarantee a faithful edit. Google cautions that generative results may be unexpected or inaccurate, so review the result before saving or sharing it.
How do I use Remix in Google Photos?
- Open the Google Photos app and tap Create.
- Choose Remix, or choose a template listed under Remix your photos.
- Select a featured template or tap View all to browse more.
- If the template asks for a reference photo, choose one. Some personalized templates may use insights from your life and can begin without an uploaded image; available templates and eligibility requirements vary.
- Tap Generate. When the result is ready, you can save it, share it, or tap Regenerate to try again with the same template.
Google says its templates are updated regularly, and some may change or be removed. These instructions reflect Google’s documented Android workflow; the July 2025 launch announcement said the feature would roll out on Android and iOS, but that announcement alone does not establish that the apps currently have identical features.

Why can’t I find Remix in Google Photos?
Access depends on eligibility, account type, backup status, network access, and location. Google’s current Help guidance says the photo must be backed up, the app needs a network connection, and a personal Google Account is required. Workspace and school accounts are not supported.
- Age: Photo Remix is for users aged 18 or older. Google’s general AI creation features may have a lower minimum age, but that does not make Remix available to under-18 users.
- Region: Google says generative features are not available everywhere and functionality can vary by location.
- Template requirements: Some templates have extra eligibility rules or ask for a reference image.
- Rollout: Google announced the U.S. launch in July 2025. On December 11, 2025, a Google Photos Community announcement named Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Turkey as additional rollout locations. These dated announcements are not a definitive current list; Google’s Help page does not provide a complete country-by-country availability list.
If Remix is missing, check that you are signed in to a personal account, your photo is backed up, and your app has a network connection. Availability still depends on your location and account eligibility; the feature may not be offered to you yet.

Does Google Photos Remix have a limit?
Yes. Google’s current Help page says daily generations are limited and that a Google AI plan increases the allowance, but it does not state a numerical daily cap. The allowance may depend on the plan and can change. A September 2025 Google article named AI Pro and Ultra as plans offering more generations at that time; that dated statement is not a current price list or a complete comparison of today’s plans.

Google describes Remix as an experimental feature and warns that outputs may be inaccurate or unexpected. A selected style is a prompt for a generated variation, not a promise that every detail of the original will remain unchanged. Look over faces, objects, and other details before deciding whether to keep or share an image.

In its July 2025 launch announcement, Google said Remix-generated images would carry an invisible SynthID watermark. That is Google’s description of the feature at launch; it does not mean every image displays a visible badge or that the watermark verifies every aspect of an image’s provenance.
