Google Photos Storage Saver reduces eligible backed-up photos and videos, but it is not lossless and it is not unlimited free storage. Photos above 16 MP may be resized to 16 MP, videos above 1080p may be resized to 1080p, and new uploads count toward Google Account storage.

Storage Saver was formerly called High quality. Google changed the name without changing the underlying quality level, but the storage policy changed: High quality and Storage Saver uploads made before June 1, 2021 remain exempt from quota, while new Storage Saver uploads use your shared Google storage.

For ordinary smartphone photos and casual 1080p videos, Storage Saver is often a sensible capacity-first choice. It is a poor substitute for an original archive if you shoot RAW, record 4K or higher video, make large prints, edit aggressively, or keep Google Photos as your only copy.

Key takeaways

  • Storage Saver may resize photos above 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p.
  • Storage Saver is compressed, potentially changes image format, and is not a lossless backup of the source file.
  • New Storage Saver uploads count toward the shared Google Account quota; eligible High quality or Storage Saver uploads from before June 1, 2021 remain exempt.
  • Changing the backup setting affects future uploads on that device, not existing photos and not necessarily other devices.
  • Recover storage can convert existing Original-quality items, but you should preserve important originals elsewhere first because the higher-resolution cloud copy may not be recoverable afterward.

What does Google Photos Storage Saver mode do?

Google Photos clarifies how Storage Saver mode works: Storage Saver changes the quality of the copy uploaded to Google Photos. Google compresses eligible photos and videos to reduce their cloud-storage use, and Google may resize or convert some files during backup.

Storage Saver does not automatically shrink the original file still stored on your phone, computer, camera card, or external drive. Storage Saver is also separate from Free up space, which removes local copies from a device after Google Photos confirms that the files are backed up.

Storage Saver does not guarantee that every item will become smaller. Google says some files cannot be compressed and may remain at their original file size. Some multi-picture-format JPEG files, including certain Android portrait photos, are examples of files that may be ineligible for compression. See Google’s backup-quality rules for the current file-handling details.

What happens to photos in Storage Saver?

Photos backed up in Storage Saver are compressed, and photos larger than 16 megapixels may be resized to 16 MP. Google says 16 MP is suitable for good-quality prints up to approximately 60 × 40 centimetres on its current computer help page, but 16 MP is a resolution ceiling—not a guaranteed file size or a promise that every photo will be reduced to exactly 16 MP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 12 MP smartphone photo can still be recompressed even though the photo is below the 16 MP threshold. Conversely, an unusual or unsupported-to-compress file may remain close to its original size despite being larger than 16 MP.

Google also says Storage Saver may convert an image to another format, such as JPEG. Format conversion can matter if you rely on a source format, embedded information, editing flexibility, or the exact file produced by a camera or phone.

Photo situation What Storage Saver may do Practical consequence
Photo above 16 MP Resize it to 16 MP Less resolution for cropping, editing, or large prints
Photo at 16 MP or below May still be compressed File size and image quality can change even without resizing
JPEG or another eligible image Compress it or convert it to another image format, such as JPEG Some original file characteristics may not remain identical
Some MPF JPEGs, including certain Android portraits May not be compressed The item may use its original file size despite Storage Saver

What happens to videos in Storage Saver?

Videos above 1080p may be resized to high-definition 1080p. Videos recorded at 1080p or below should look close to the original according to Google, but Storage Saver does not promise identical video files or a fixed percentage reduction.

Codec, bitrate, frame rate, HDR, metadata, captions, and file format affect how a video is processed and how much space it uses. Google warns that some information, including closed captions, may be lost. A 4K video should therefore be treated as a video that may lose resolution and other source characteristics—not simply as a guaranteed smaller copy with every feature preserved.

Video situation Documented Storage Saver behavior What to expect
Above 1080p, such as 4K May be resized to 1080p Reduced resolution and potentially less editing flexibility
1080p or below Should look close to the original Some compression or information changes may still occur
Video with captions or complex metadata Some information may be lost Keep the original if captions or metadata matter

What is the difference between Storage Saver and Original quality?

Original quality preserves the captured resolution and is the safer choice when the Google Photos copy must remain an archive. Storage Saver prioritizes lower cloud use and convenience by accepting compression, possible format conversion, and documented resolution limits.

Decision factor Storage Saver Original quality
Photo resolution Photos above 16 MP may be reduced to 16 MP Preserves the captured resolution, subject to Google’s file support and upload behavior
Video resolution Videos above 1080p may be reduced to 1080p Preserves the captured resolution, subject to Google’s file support and upload behavior
Compression Compressed; some images may be converted to another format No intended quality reduction
Storage quota New uploads count toward quota; eligible pre-June 1, 2021 uploads remain exempt Uploads count toward quota regardless of upload date
Best use Everyday phone photos, casual sharing, normal screens, and capacity-conscious backups Archiving, RAW workflows, high-resolution cameras, professional video, editing, and large prints
Reversibility Converting an existing original may discard detail that the reduced copy cannot restore Keeps the higher-quality cloud copy

Google specifically recommends Original quality for photos above 16 MP, videos above 1080p, and large-banner printing. Storage Saver is usually reasonable when the library consists mainly of smartphone snapshots viewed on phones, tablets, laptops, or ordinary televisions. Storage Saver is less appropriate for RAW files, high-megapixel photographs, HDR or computational formats, 4K or 8K footage, high-frame-rate video, aggressive cropping, repeated editing, or irreplaceable originals.

Is Storage Saver unlimited or free?

No. Storage Saver is not unlimited free storage for new Google Photos uploads. Google ended the general unlimited High quality policy for new uploads beginning June 1, 2021. New Storage Saver uploads count against the Google Account quota, although they generally use less space than Original-quality uploads.

According to Google’s storage-policy clarification, High quality or Storage Saver photos and videos backed up before June 1, 2021 remain exempt from quota usage. Original-quality uploads count toward storage regardless of the upload date.

Google’s current help information also describes a separate exception for Pixel phones Pixel 5 and earlier: photos and videos backed up from those devices may retain unlimited no-charge storage under Google’s device-specific terms. The exception does not make Storage Saver universally free, and users should check the terms that apply to their specific Pixel device and account.

How much Google Account storage does Google Photos use?

Google Account storage is shared by Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. According to Google’s storage help, a standard account includes up to 15 GB shared across those services unless the account has purchased more storage or has a separate organisational or device-specific allowance.

When the shared quota is full, Google says users cannot upload or back up new photos and videos. Gmail and Google Drive can also be affected because the same storage pool covers email attachments, Drive files, and Photos content.

Google’s storage-management documentation says content may be deleted after two years of inactivity in Google Photos or after an account remains over quota for two years, subject to Google’s notices, policies, and account exceptions. That is not an immediate deletion rule, but it is a reason to monitor the account rather than treat quota warnings as harmless.

Buying Google One storage plans adds capacity shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. Google’s help page currently gives a U.S. example of 100 GB for $1.99 per month, but prices, taxes, billing options, promotions, and availability vary by region and can change. Extra storage preserves future Original-quality uploads; it does not restore an original that was already converted to Storage Saver.

Should you choose Storage Saver or Original quality?

The right setting depends on whether Google Photos is primarily a convenient viewing library or an original-file archive.

Choose Storage Saver when:

  • You mainly back up ordinary smartphone photos.
  • You mostly view and share photos on phones, tablets, computers, or standard televisions.
  • You rarely print larger than common photo sizes.
  • You prefer to stretch the shared Google storage quota.
  • You maintain an independent copy of important originals.
  • You accept that compression, resizing, format conversion, and some information loss can occur.

Choose Original quality when:

  • You shoot RAW, high-megapixel, HDR, or other formats where the source file matters.
  • You record 4K, 8K, high-frame-rate, or professionally edited video.
  • You may crop heavily, edit repeatedly, or print large images.
  • You need the highest-quality files for migration to another service later.
  • Google Photos is the only copy of irreplaceable photos and videos.
  • Captions, motion-photo components, metadata, or editing latitude are important.

A practical compromise is to use Storage Saver for routine phone media while keeping camera originals and irreplaceable projects in an independent archive. Google Photos can be a convenient browsing and sharing service without being the only preservation system.

How do you change Storage Saver on iPhone or iPad?

On an iPhone or iPad, the Google Photos backup-quality setting is found under Backup:

Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions use both “Backup quality” and “Photos & videos quality” in current documentation. The label can differ by app version or interface rollout.

How do you change Storage Saver on a computer?

On a computer, open Google Photos settings and select the desired backup quality. Changing the setting on the web does not automatically mean that every phone, tablet, or computer using the same Google Account will use the same setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google treats backup quality as a device-specific setting. If you use Google Photos on multiple devices, check the setting on each device that uploads media. A Storage Saver selection on an Android phone should not be assumed to have changed the setting on an iPad, another phone, or a computer.

How do you convert existing Original-quality photos to Storage Saver?

Changing the future backup setting does not convert photos already stored in Original quality. Existing items require a separate web-based library conversion through Recover storage.

  1. Open photos.google.com on a computer.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Open Manage storage.
  4. Under Recover storage, choose Convert existing photos and videos to Storage saver.
  5. Read the warning and confirm the conversion.

Google says Recover storage targets eligible existing Original-quality items, may not compress every item, does not change the quality selected for future uploads, and can be used only once per day. The control may not appear for accounts with unlimited Google Photos storage. See Google’s conversion instructions before starting.

Back up first. Download important Original-quality photos and videos before using Recover storage. Check that the downloaded files open correctly and keep at least one independent copy. Google documents the conversion process but does not promise a restoration path from the reduced Storage Saver copy back to the discarded original resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recover storage is a cloud-library conversion operation, not a toggle for future backups. Recover storage reduces the quality of eligible cloud copies; Free up space removes local device copies that have already been backed up. Neither function is the same as creating an independent archival backup.

How can you check the quality of one Google Photos item?

To inspect an individual photo or video, open the item in Google Photos and view its information panel. On the web, click Info. On mobile, open the item and swipe up or open the details panel. Look for the backup quality and storage information.

Google’s backup-status help explains where the details are shown. If Google could not apply Storage Saver compression after an attempted backup, the details may show Not eligible for Storage saver. “Not eligible” does not necessarily mean that the item was not backed up; it means Google did not apply the Storage Saver conversion to that item.

Why did Storage Saver barely reduce your storage?

Storage Saver can produce little visible reduction because the setting does not guarantee a smaller file for every item. Files that are already compressed, files below the resolution thresholds, unusual formats, and ineligible MPF JPEGs may remain close to their original size.

Google Photos storage is also shared with Gmail and Drive. If Gmail attachments or Drive files use most of the account quota, changing photo quality may not create as much free space as expected. There is no universal Storage Saver percentage because savings vary with resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, format, metadata, and the source file itself.

Why did changing Storage Saver not change old photos?

Changing Storage Saver changes future backup behavior on the device where the setting was changed; it does not automatically convert existing Original-quality items. To process eligible existing items, use the web-based Recover storage control after preserving important originals.

Why is one portrait or video still full size?

Some files cannot be compressed under Google’s Storage Saver rules, so Google may leave them at their original file size or show Not eligible for Storage saver in the item details. Certain MPF JPEGs, including some Android portrait photos, are specifically identified by Google as possible exceptions.

A video at 1080p or below is not documented as being resized to a lower resolution, and a photo at 16 MP or below is not automatically converted to a smaller fixed-size file. Storage Saver’s thresholds describe when resizing may occur, not a guaranteed result for every file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Express the same as Storage Saver?

No. Express is a more aggressive backup-quality option and is not available in every country or region. Where Google offers Express, photos above 3 MP may be resized to 3 MP and videos above 480p may be resized to 480p. Express is therefore more likely to reduce resolution than Storage Saver and is intended for users prioritizing capacity or lower data use over preservation.

Backup option Documented photo behavior Documented video behavior Best understood as
Original quality Preserves captured resolution, subject to file support and upload behavior Preserves captured resolution, subject to file support and upload behavior Highest-quality cloud copy
Storage Saver Photos above 16 MP may become 16 MP; compression and format conversion may occur Videos above 1080p may become 1080p; some information may be lost Capacity-conscious backup with moderate reduction
Express, where available Photos above 3 MP may become 3 MP Videos above 480p may become 480p More aggressive reduction and lower data use

What is the safest recommendation?

Use Storage Saver for convenience-oriented everyday backups when modest quality reduction is acceptable and you want to slow the growth of the shared Google storage quota. Use Original quality when Google Photos is your archive, when the source quality matters, or when you may edit, crop, print, or migrate the files later.

For irreplaceable originals, the safest arrangement is Google Photos plus an independent copy. Storage Saver can reduce the cloud copy, and Google One can add quota, but neither option replaces a second backup. Extra quota is useful when you want to keep Original quality; extra quota cannot restore detail already discarded by a previous conversion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Photos Storage Saver reduce the original photos on my phone?

No. Storage Saver changes the copy uploaded to Google Photos and does not automatically reduce the original file stored on your phone, computer, camera card, or external drive. The separate Free up space feature can remove local copies after backup.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Google Photos restore an original after converting it to Storage Saver?

You should treat conversion as potentially irreversible for the higher-resolution cloud copy. Download and verify important Original-quality files before using Recover storage because Google does not promise that the discarded resolution can be restored.

Does Storage Saver work the same way on every device?

No. Google says the backup-quality setting is device-specific. Check the setting separately on Android, iPhone or iPad, and computers that upload to the same Google Account.

Why does Storage Saver not always make a file smaller?

Storage Saver does not compress every file. Some files are already compressed, some formats—including certain MPF JPEG portrait files—may be ineligible, and file characteristics such as codec, bitrate, metadata, and resolution affect the result.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Storage Saver is a useful space-conscious backup setting, not lossless storage and not unlimited free storage. Choose it for ordinary phone media when convenience matters most; choose Original quality for photography, high-resolution video, large prints, editing, and archival copies. Before converting existing uploads, preserve the originals elsewhere.
