Visit a place when its current conditions, scale, movement, sound, or lived-in character will materially affect the scene. Online imagery is a dated view, not a complete or necessarily current record—and viewing Google content does not automatically give you the right to copy it into a game.
What each method can tell you
Google Maps and Street View: remote orientation
Maps can help you locate a candidate neighborhood, route, or spatial arrangement. Street View can show visible features along a camera’s path. Together, they are useful for forming questions: Where does this street meet the plaza? What sits across from the station? Which details might need checking?
They cannot reliably establish every present-day condition. Google cautions that real conditions can differ from map results and tells users to exercise independent judgment. Google Maps Additional Terms of Service
A site visit: firsthand observation
Visiting gives you the chance to observe the place as it is now, including how people move through it and details such as sound, weather, materials, and patterns of use. That can matter when a scene depends on scale, sightlines, slopes, access, or atmosphere that a remote view cannot settle. This is a practical design judgment, not a proven rule that visits always produce more realistic game worlds.

Visit only where you can do so safely and lawfully. Make your own notes and sketches rather than treating a visit as permission to reproduce someone else’s work or private space.
Choose a method based on the design question

This is a practical framework, not a guarantee that a particular use of Maps is permitted or that a visit is safe or lawful.
A practical research workflow
- Orient remotely. Use Maps to understand the broad layout and make a short list of details to verify.
- Separate observations from assumptions. Record questions rather than treating every visible detail as a current fact.
- Verify consequential details. Check current, independent sources or visit accessible locations when firsthand observation could change the scene.
- Record your own reference. Make original notes and sketches. A pocket field notebook is one optional way to capture observations, not a requirement.
- Design an original environment. Use research to inform a fictionalized world. Before embedding or reproducing Google content, check the current rules that apply to the product and use.
Can you build a game world entirely from position-mapped real-world photos?
Photos can provide visual reference, but they do not by themselves establish a complete, current, or usable basis for a game world. A camera view captures only what was visible from its position at the time; it does not answer every question about scale, access, movement, sound, or how a place functions. If you mean using Google Street View imagery itself as game assets or tracing it to create geometry, do not assume that imagery available to view is cleared for that purpose. Review the applicable terms and obtain permissions where needed.
Why Street View may not show what is there now
Google says Street View shows what cameras captured when they passed. Processing takes at least a few months, and imagery may be anywhere from a few months to a few years old. Construction, signage, access, traffic, and other time-sensitive details may have changed. Google also says it automatically blurs faces and license plates and allows people to request additional blurring of a person, car, or home; that privacy feature does not make imagery real-time or guarantee that every detail is current. Understand the reuse boundary before shipping
Research access is not the same as a reuse license. Google’s general Maps terms restrict redistributing or selling Maps content, copying it except where permitted, mass downloading it, and certain uses that create substitute mapping datasets. The Google Maps Platform Terms of Service give examples of restricted derivations, including tracing or digitizing roads and building outlines from specified map imagery. Google’s Geo Guidelines say Street View imagery may not be screenshotted or removed from its embedded context, and list tracing or analyzing imagery to create data among disallowed uses. The Google Maps Platform FAQ says map tiles and satellite imagery cannot be accessed through mechanisms outside Google Maps Platform.
Google’s Geo Guidelines require attribution for Maps, Earth, and Street View content; attribution text can vary by geography and content type. Do not remove or hide it. Attribution alone does not authorize extracting or reusing Street View imagery. The cited terms do not resolve every possible fair-use, permission, or jurisdiction-specific question. For a consequential commercial use, check the current agreement for the relevant product, billing geography, and implementation, and seek qualified legal advice.

Historical context: location-based games
In 2018, TIME reported on a then-new Google Maps integration for location-based mobile games and quoted product lead Kei Kawai Jacoby on the value of recognizing real-world features such as parks in game design. That account is historical context, not evidence that the same product, terms, or availability remain current in 2026. TIME’s 2018 report
