Google Maps made reporting police presence and other road incidents easier in an update announced on July 31, 2024. Google says reports can come from both the Google Maps and Waze communities, and Maps can show which app supplied a report. The exact reporting controls depend on your device, vehicle, country and road segment, so there is no single button sequence that applies everywhere.

What Google changed

Google’s July 31, 2024 announcement described a simpler way for drivers to share useful road information in Maps. The examples include police presence, construction, lane closures and objects in the road. When community information appears, Maps can identify whether it came from the Maps or Waze community.

This does not mean every user-submitted report is automatically sent to both services. Google’s announcement supports the narrower conclusion that information from both communities can appear in the Maps experience and that the originating app may be shown.

Can you report police in Google Maps?

Yes, where the reporting feature is enabled for your particular Maps experience. Google Maps Help documents incident reporting in Maps built into certain cars: a driver can submit a report while navigating, and reports from other users may appear along the route.

Availability is conditional. Google identifies the limits as certain cars, countries and road sections or segments. The published help information does not provide a complete matrix of supported phone operating systems, app versions, vehicle models or countries, so the absence of a report control on your screen does not necessarily indicate a fault.

Where is the police-report control?

There is no universal location that can be accurately promised for every phone, vehicle or Maps interface. In a supported in-car experience, look for the incident-report control shown while navigation is active. The available categories can vary by implementation, and police presence may be listed separately from other incidents.

If you cannot find a reporting control, check that you are using navigation in a supported car and route, and avoid trying to change settings while moving. Maps may expose different controls on a phone, on a vehicle’s built-in system or in another regional release.

How reports appear during navigation

When community reports are available for your route, Maps may display them during navigation. The report can indicate whether the information came from Maps or Waze, giving you context about its source rather than presenting every alert as a Google Maps-only submission.

Community alerts are not a guarantee that police are still at a location. Conditions can change, and the documentation reviewed does not establish a measured accuracy rate or a safety improvement caused by police-presence reporting.

Google Maps versus Waze reporting

Waze separately documents tools for reporting police sightings and for using voice commands to report what is on the road. Those instructions show that Waze supports both police-sighting reports and voice-based reporting in its own app. They do not establish that Waze is easier, more reliable or more widely available than Maps.

Do not confuse police reports with speed-camera alerts

A 2026 Waze Official Announcements post describes permanent, Waze-mapped speed-camera alerts beginning to surface in Google Maps, initially in the United States, Australia and the Netherlands, with a broader rollout planned. That is a camera-alert rollout, not evidence that all police-presence reports are shared between the two apps or available in those same regions.

Report only when it is safe

Google’s safety instruction is explicit: submit a report only when it is safe to do so. A driver should not handle a phone, search for a control or compose a report while traffic conditions require full attention.

  • Set up navigation before moving whenever possible.
  • Use a vehicle’s integrated controls or voice interaction only if they are supported and do not distract you.
  • If reporting would require reaching for the phone or looking away from the road, wait until you are safely parked.
  • Treat an alert as community information, not a command to brake, turn or drive differently without checking the road and posted signs.

What to do if the feature is missing

  1. Confirm that navigation is active rather than viewing the map without a route.
  2. Check whether you are using a supported in-car Maps experience; Google says availability varies by car, country and road segment.
  3. Look for the incident-report option without interacting while driving.
  4. If the option remains unavailable, use the app’s documented support and feedback paths after you stop. Do not assume that installing a different app version will enable a feature that is restricted by vehicle or region.

What this update means for drivers

The practical change is easier access to community-supplied road information, including police presence, in supported Maps experiences. It is not a promise of universal coverage, real-time accuracy or identical controls across phones and cars. Check which app supplied an alert, follow local traffic laws and keep safety ahead of submitting or reading a report.
