Google announced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, 2026, but it is not publicly available yet. Trusted cyber defenders in Google’s Fairwind Program are receiving the first access, alongside Google’s internal teams. Google says paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers are next after additional safeguard work; it has not announced a date for that expansion or general availability.

Who can use Gemini 4 Argon now?

Access is currently limited to trusted cyber defenders selected through Google’s Fairwind Program and to Google teams using Argon internally. This is a controlled deployment, not an open developer preview or consumer release.

Google says the next phase will begin with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers. It then expects to move toward broader developer, enterprise and consumer access. The company has not provided a schedule for any of those stages.

Why are cyber defenders getting Argon first?

Google is positioning Argon as a model for long-horizon software engineering, enterprise work such as legal and finance, and cybersecurity defense. Its most consequential claimed capability is the ability to autonomously find, validate and patch critical software vulnerabilities.

  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

Cybersecurity is also a dual-use area: the same ability to discover weaknesses could help an attacker. Google’s staged approach lets experienced defenders test the model in real environments while the company continues to refine monitoring, misuse prevention and containment. Google DeepMind chief AI architect Koray Kavukcuoglu described the rationale plainly: “Safely releasing frontier capabilities at this level requires a phased approach.”

What Google says Argon can do

Vulnerability discovery and remediation

Google says Argon handled an internal vulnerability benchmark involving complex codebases across 20 programming languages. The announcement also says Argon outperformed Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber on Wiz’s internal black-box penetration-testing benchmark, although it does not publish a score for that comparison. Wiz is using Argon through its Scan for Good initiative.

Long-running software work

Google reports a 77.9% result on DeepSWE v1.1, which it describes as an evaluation of real-world, long-horizon software-engineering tasks. In one internal example, Google says Argon-assisted work made its libgav1 video decoder 2.7 times faster than an existing Rust port while producing identical video output. That is a specific decoder project, not a general promise that every software project will run 2.7 times faster.

Enterprise workflows and long-context output

Google reports 51.3% on AutomationBench, a Zapier evaluation of end-to-end execution across core business functions, and 91.7% on LVBench, its long-video-understanding evaluation. Argon’s maximum output length is reported as one million tokens, up from 64,000, which Google says is intended to support longer and more complex tasks.

Specialized technical optimization

Google says an Argon example involving quantum-subroutine resource optimization was 40% better than a published baseline. The announcement does not establish that this improvement transfers to unrelated scientific or engineering workloads.

Google’s published benchmark results

The figures below are results reported by Google in its September 30 announcement. The sources reviewed for this article do not include independent replication, so they should be read as company claims rather than verified industry-wide rankings.

Evaluation or example Figure reported by Google What Google says it represents
DeepSWE v1.1 77.9% Real-world, long-horizon software-engineering tasks
CWE-bench v1 68% Tied for first on a vulnerability-remediation benchmark
AutomationBench 51.3% End-to-end execution across core business functions
LVBench 91.7% Long-video understanding
Maximum output 1 million tokens Expanded from 64,000 tokens for longer tasks
libgav1 example 2.7× faster Argon-assisted work compared with an existing Rust port, with identical video output
Quantum optimization example 40% better Improvement over a published baseline in Google’s example

Google also reports freeing more than 300 TiB of memory after internal optimizations, with estimated total savings of 500 TiB to 1 PiB. Those are internal infrastructure figures, not a promise of equivalent savings for customers.

What safeguards are still being developed?

Google says it is continuing work in four areas before expanding access:

  • Reasoning and action monitoring: looking for signs that the model’s behavior is misaligned with its permitted task.
  • Hardened sandboxes: isolating high-risk training and evaluation environments.

Google says internal and external red teams used manual and automated attacks to test these protections, but the announcement does not publish complete test results. For the initial trusted-defender and internal cohorts, Google says Argon will be released without cyber guardrails so defenders can exercise its defensive capabilities. That condition is specific to the controlled cohort and should not be read as a general-public policy.

When will paid customers and the public get access?

Stage Who is included Status
Initial rollout Trusted cyber defenders in Fairwind and Google internal teams Underway
Next expansion Paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers Planned after further safeguard iteration; date not announced
Later expansion Developers, enterprises and consumers Planned direction; timing and terms not announced

Google also says it is participating in the U.S. government’s voluntary process for pre-release model access. That participation is not a public approval, certification or safety endorsement.

How much will Argon cost?

Google says it has planned introductory and later API pricing for the broader rollout. The announcement summary does not state the figures or how long the introductory period will last. Because paid API and Ultra access are not yet open, any price should be checked against Google’s current product terms when access expands. The announcement does not provide full terms for the future subscription route.

What these claims establish—and what they do not

Argon’s launch establishes that Google is testing a frontier model with a deliberate cybersecurity-first release strategy. The published results indicate the areas Google considers important: software engineering, vulnerability remediation, business automation, video understanding and specialized technical optimization.

They do not independently establish that Argon is superior on every coding task, that its vulnerability patches are safe without human review, or that the reported internal productivity and infrastructure gains will occur in another organization. The benchmarks use different tasks and scoring methods, and several examples are demonstrations rather than broad production measurements.

What organizations should watch next

  • Google’s announcement of eligibility and dates for paid API or AI Ultra access.
  • Published pricing, rate limits, data-use terms and permitted cybersecurity activities.
  • More detail on red-team results and the safeguards applied outside the trusted-defender cohort.
  • Independent evaluations of vulnerability discovery, patch correctness, false positives and operational reliability.
