Google’s Indexing API is not a general-purpose URL submission service. Google documents it for pages that contain JobPosting structured data or a BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. The documented project defaults are 200 publish requests per day, 180 metadata requests per minute, and 380 total requests per minute. A successful HTTP 200 only means Google may recrawl the URL soon; it does not guarantee indexing or a search result.
What the Indexing API is—and what it is not
The Indexing API is a notification channel. Your site tells Google that an eligible URL was added, changed, or removed, and Google can use that signal to schedule a crawl. It does not directly place a page in the index, bypass quality systems, or replace technical SEO fundamentals such as crawlability, canonical URLs, valid structured data, and useful page content.
Google Search Central states that the API “can only be used to crawl pages with either JobPosting or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject.” A normal article, product page, category page, documentation page, or home page is outside that documented eligibility. Sending other URLs may consume quota without providing a supported indexing workflow.
Eligible job pages
A qualifying job URL is an individual page for one job opening with JobPosting markup. A search-results page, department listing, or page containing many jobs is not the intended target. The structured data must describe the same job information a visitor can see in the browser.

Eligible livestream pages
A livestream URL qualifies through BroadcastEvent markup nested in a VideoObject. The API can notify Google when that supported livestream page is new, updated, or removed. The authentication, quota, batching, and anti-abuse rules are the same as for job pages.
Current documented quotas
The following are Google’s documented default quotas per Google Cloud project. They were listed on Google Search Central’s 2026 documentation page retrieved on October 20, 2026.

Google says you can request a higher quota, but approval is not automatic. Google may increase or decrease an approved quota based on document quality. A larger allowance does not make an ineligible URL eligible and does not guarantee faster indexing.

What the daily number means operationally
The 200-publish default is counted per URL notification. If your system sends 200 publish notifications in a Pacific Time calendar day, further publish notifications require the quota to reset or an approved increase. Plan around the reset time rather than your server’s local midnight.
Per-minute limits are separate from the daily publish allowance. A worker can remain below 200 publishes for the day and still receive a rate-limit response if it sends requests too quickly. Use a queue with a project-wide rate limiter, record the response for each request, and retry only according to the error response and your backoff policy.

Update, delete, and metadata notifications
URL_UPDATED
Send URL_UPDATED when a supported page is newly published or its eligible content has materially changed. The request body contains one fully qualified URL and the notification type:

Send URL_DELETED after an eligible page has been removed. For an expired job, first make the page state accurate: set validThrough to a past date, remove the page or return an appropriate 404 or 410 when it should disappear, or remove the JobPosting markup when the page remains for another purpose. Google recommends the Indexing API for job URL removals because it prompts Googlebot to crawl sooner than waiting for a sitemap change alone.
Notification metadata
The notification-status endpoint reports the last notification Google received for a URL. Use it to audit what your system submitted and when, rather than treating a publish response as proof that the page is indexed. Metadata requests are subject to the 180-per-minute project quota.
How to set up a compliant implementation
- Enable the Indexing API in Google Cloud. Enable it in the same project whose quota and service account you will monitor.
- Create a service account. Store its credentials securely and restrict access to the process that sends notifications. Do not place private keys in browser code or public repositories.
- Verify site ownership in Google Search Console. The property must cover the URLs you submit. Verification and service-account authorization are separate setup responsibilities; complete both before sending production notifications.
- Obtain an access token. Authenticate the service account and send the token in the request’s authorization header. The request content type must be
application/json. - Construct one publish request per URL. Include the fully qualified URL and either
URL_UPDATEDorURL_DELETED. Keep the submitted URL aligned with the page’s canonical URL. - Send the request to Google’s documented publish endpoint. Use the current endpoint and authentication instructions in Google Search Central’s Indexing API documentation; do not hard-code an obsolete endpoint from an old integration guide.
- Record the response. Log the URL, notification type, timestamp in UTC, HTTP status, response body, retry count, and the project identity used for the call.
- Check notification metadata when diagnosing a URL. This confirms the last notification Google received, but it still does not prove that Google crawled or indexed the page.
- Validate the page itself. Confirm that Googlebot can fetch it, the canonical is correct, and the structured data passes Google’s Rich Results Test before spending publish quota.
JobPosting pages: implementation requirements
Use one dedicated page per opening
Put JobPosting on a page that presents one job. A listing page can link to individual openings, but it should not be the URL you notify as a job posting. This separation also makes expiration, canonicalization, and status monitoring unambiguous.

Keep markup and visible content identical in substance
Every material field represented in structured data must agree with what a visitor sees. If salary is shown in the markup, the corresponding salary information should be visible on the page. The same principle applies to title, hiring organization, location, employment details, and closing date. Hidden, misleading, or stale values can make the page ineligible or reduce trust in the implementation.

Make the canonical page crawlable
- Use the canonical URL as the value in the API request.
- Do not block the page in
robots.txtor with a noindex directive when you want it crawled and indexed. - Ensure the page returns a successful response while the job is active.
- Keep the job details available without requiring Googlebot to complete an interactive action that it cannot perform.
- Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test after template or schema changes.
Handle expiration deliberately
When a role closes, update validThrough so it is in the past. Then choose the page state that matches your user experience: remove the page and return 404 or 410, or retain a useful archive page while removing the JobPosting markup. Send URL_DELETED when the job URL should no longer be treated as an active posting. Do not leave an expired opening marked as current simply because the URL still returns 200.
BroadcastEvent and livestream pages
The required nesting matters
BroadcastEvent is eligible for this API only when it is embedded in a VideoObject. A page that merely mentions a livestream, embeds an unrelated player, or uses BroadcastEvent outside a VideoObject does not meet the documented condition.
Notify meaningful lifecycle changes
Use URL_UPDATED when a supported livestream page is created or its event details change. Use URL_DELETED when the page is removed. Keep the page accessible and ensure the event data reflects what viewers can see. The API may prompt a recrawl, but Google does not promise a particular crawl time or a search appearance.
Do not allocate job and livestream quotas independently
Both page types draw from the same project quotas. If one publishing pipeline consumes the 200 daily publish notifications, the other pipeline cannot submit additional publish notifications until the quota resets or Google approves a higher limit. Use a shared queue and expose per-type counts in monitoring.

Individual requests versus multipart batches
A single publish request contains one URL. Google also documents multipart batching of up to 100 requests to reduce HTTP connection overhead. Each batch part cannot exceed 1 MB.

A batch of 100 therefore consumes 100 quota units. Batching is a transport optimization, not a way to submit more URLs than your daily or per-minute allowance permits. Your retry logic should identify failed parts so that a transient error does not cause unnecessary resubmission of successful notifications.
Designing a safe submission queue
Separate page events from API calls
When a job is published, changed, or closed—or a livestream is created, updated, or removed—write an event to a durable queue. A worker can then validate eligibility, normalize the canonical URL, enforce rate limits, submit the notification, and record the result. This avoids losing a notification when a web request times out or a deployment restarts.
Validate before consuming quota
- Confirm the URL is fully qualified and is the canonical URL.
- Confirm the page belongs to a verified Search Console property.
- For jobs, confirm one opening is represented and the markup is visible and current.
- For livestreams, confirm
BroadcastEventis nested inVideoObject. - Check that the intended action is update or delete, not a default value that could send the wrong lifecycle signal.
Throttle at the project level
Multiple application instances can collectively exceed the per-minute limits even when each instance appears compliant. Apply a shared 380-requests-per-minute ceiling and reserve capacity for metadata checks. Track the 200-publish daily budget separately, with counters keyed to Pacific Time so operators see the same window Google uses.

Retry transient failures with exponential backoff and jitter, preserving the original URL and notification type. Do not immediately replay an entire batch when only one part failed. Stop retrying permanent validation or authorization errors until the underlying page, property, or credential problem is fixed.

Monitoring, responses, and failure diagnosis
A 200 response is not an indexing guarantee
Google’s documented behavior is that a successful HTTP 200 means it may try to recrawl the URL soon. It does not say that the page will definitely be crawled, accepted into the index, shown in a job result, or displayed in a livestream feature. Continue to evaluate crawlability, content quality, structured-data validity, and canonical signals independently.
Useful operational metrics
- Publish notifications used today, split between
URL_UPDATEDandURL_DELETED. - Requests per minute across all workers and the number of metadata requests.
- Responses grouped by HTTP status and error reason.
- Queue age for new, changed, and removed pages.
- URLs whose notification metadata does not match the latest intended event.
- Structured-data validation failures and pages that no longer return a crawlable response.
Common symptoms and fixes
- Rate-limit responses: reduce concurrency, apply a shared project-wide limiter, and wait for the relevant minute or daily window. Increasing batch size will not change URL-level quota consumption.
- Authorization or permission errors: verify that the API is enabled, the access token is current, the service account is authorized, and the Search Console property is verified for the submitted site.
- Notifications accepted but no search result: inspect the page in Search Console and validate its structured data. A notification starts a possible recrawl; it does not override indexing decisions.
- Expired jobs remain visible: correct
validThrough, remove or retire the page or markup as appropriate, and sendURL_DELETEDfor the URL that should leave the active job set. - Livestream notifications have no effect: verify that
BroadcastEventis actually nested in aVideoObjectand that the page is the canonical, crawlable event URL.
Quota increases and anti-abuse rules
If the documented defaults do not cover the volume of eligible changes, request a quota increase through Google’s quota process. Explain the legitimate volume, page types, validation controls, and monitoring you use. Google notes that quota can increase or decrease based on document quality, so an approval is not permanent protection against poor markup or low-quality pages.
Do not create multiple projects or accounts to evade submission limits. Google says submissions undergo spam detection and that abuse can lead to revoked access. A compliant design improves the pages and sends accurate lifecycle notifications rather than attempting to manufacture extra quota.

Practical preflight checklist
- The URL is a fully qualified canonical URL for one supported page.
- The site is verified in Google Search Console and the API is enabled in Google Cloud.
- The service account can obtain a valid access token.
- The request uses
application/jsonand the correct notification type. - A job page contains one visible job and matching
JobPostingdata, or a livestream page containsBroadcastEventinsideVideoObject. - The page is crawlable and does not contradict its structured data.
- For a closure,
validThrough, HTTP status, markup, and deletion notification agree. - The queue enforces 200 publishes per day, 180 metadata requests per minute, and 380 total requests per minute per project.
- Logs capture every response and retries are bounded and backoff-based.
- No additional accounts or projects are being used to evade limits.
Bottom line
Use the Indexing API as a tightly scoped notification system for individual JobPosting pages and livestream pages that contain BroadcastEvent within VideoObject. Build around the 200-per-day publish limit, the 180-per-minute metadata limit, and the 380-per-minute total limit; remember that the daily window resets at midnight Pacific Time. Choose URL_UPDATED for new or changed pages and URL_DELETED for removals, validate the page before submitting, and treat HTTP 200 as permission to hope for a near-term recrawl—not as a promise of indexing.
