Google’s Indexing API is a notification channel for a narrow class of pages, not an instant-indexing button. It can notify Google about pages containing JobPosting structured data or a BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject. You need a Google Cloud project, service-account authentication, verified Search Console ownership, and API approval and quota beyond initial testing.
A successful HTTP 200 response confirms that Google received your notification. It does not prove that Google crawled or indexed the URL, and it does not set a removal deadline. The same distinction applies to deletion notifications: Google may act after receiving them, but the action is not immediate or guaranteed at a specified time.
What the Google Indexing API is—and what it is not
The API lets an eligible publisher notify Google when a page is published, materially changed, or deleted. It is designed for high-churn content such as job postings and livestream-event pages, where waiting for a periodic discovery process can leave outdated information in search results.

Eligibility is limited
Google Search Central states that the API can crawl only pages containing one of these supported configurations:
JobPostingstructured data on a job page.BroadcastEventembedded in aVideoObjecton a livestream-event page.
Pages outside those categories—such as ordinary articles, product pages, company homepages, or documentation—should use Search Console’s request-indexing workflow and a complete sitemap instead.
What you need before requesting approval
1. An eligible, publisher-owned URL
The URL must belong to the publisher submitting the request. For an update notification, it must also be crawlable. Confirm that the page is publicly reachable, returns a successful HTTP response, and contains the supported structured data in the rendered page. A URL that is blocked, inaccessible, or missing the required markup is not made eligible by an API call.

Use a Google Cloud project to enable the Indexing API. The project is the unit to which the documented request quotas apply, so choose an operational project that your publishing system can manage and monitor.
3. A service account and OAuth token
Create a service account in the project and configure your application to obtain an OAuth access token with the scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/indexing. Keep the service-account key or other credential material out of source repositories and client-side code. Your server should request and refresh tokens securely.

4. Verified Search Console ownership
Verify ownership of the relevant Search Console property before sending production notifications. The API quickstart includes ownership verification as part of onboarding. If the property, URL, or account relationship is wrong, authentication can succeed while the notification still fails authorization or is applied to the wrong site.
5. Approval and quota
Initial testing does not automatically provide unlimited production capacity. Follow Google’s approval process, request the quota your publishing volume requires, and comply with Google’s spam policies. Google warns that trying to evade limits by creating or rotating multiple accounts can result in revoked access.

- Confirm the page type. Verify that every URL you intend to notify contains
JobPostingor aBroadcastEventinside aVideoObject. - Enable the API. In the selected Google Cloud project, enable the Indexing API.
- Create authentication. Create a service account and implement OAuth token acquisition with the indexing scope.
- Verify ownership. Verify the site or URL-prefix property in Search Console and ensure the submitting setup is authorized for that property.
- Send controlled tests. Submit a small number of valid notifications and inspect the HTTP response and notification metadata.
- Request production quota. Submit Google’s quota-approval request with an honest estimate of publishing volume and maintain document quality. Google may raise or lower an allocation rather than granting every requested amount.
The API is available without a separate usage charge under Google’s documented quota and pricing rules. “Free” does not mean unlimited: the request ceilings and approval requirements still apply.
How to send a URL_UPDATED notification
Use URL_UPDATED when an eligible page is first published or its eligible content changes. The publish endpoint is https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications:publish. Send an authenticated HTTPS POST with the header Content-Type: application/json.

}The URL in the body must be the canonical, publisher-owned address that Google can crawl. Do not submit a relative path, a private staging URL, or a URL that redirects to an unrelated resource.

Submit another URL_UPDATED notification when the eligible page changes again. Google documents this as another recrawl attempt; it is not a replacement for keeping the page technically accessible and the structured data accurate.
How long does Google take to crawl after an Indexing API request?
There is no guaranteed crawl window. Google’s documented wording is: “An HTTP 200 response means that Google may try to recrawl this URL soon.” The important terms are may and soon: they describe a possible attempt, not a deadline, service-level agreement, or indexing result.
A 200 response means the notification was accepted by the endpoint. Google can still decide not to crawl immediately, fail to index the page after crawling, or retain an older result if the page does not meet its quality, policy, technical, or eligibility requirements. Do not promise editors or customers that a 200 response will produce a search result within a particular number of minutes or hours.
How to check whether Google received your notification
Query the metadata endpoint with the URL encoded as the url parameter:

https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications/metadata?url=ENCODED_URLThe response reports the latest update and removal notifications Google received for that URL. Google explicitly says that the GET result does not tell you when Google indexes or removes a URL; it only confirms whether a notification was successfully submitted. Treat it as an API-delivery audit trail, not an indexing-status report.
How to update an indexed or previously submitted page
- Publish the new eligible content at the same publisher-owned URL.
- Keep the page crawlable and ensure the structured data reflects the current content.
- POST a
URL_UPDATEDnotification to https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications:publish. - Record the HTTP response and, if needed, query the metadata endpoint to verify receipt.
- Allow Google to decide when to recrawl and whether the changed page qualifies for indexing.
If the page changes again, repeat the notification for that change. Repeatedly submitting an unchanged URL does not create a faster-crawl guarantee.
How to remove a URL
Use URL_DELETED only after the page has genuinely been removed or made non-indexable. Before sending the deletion notification, make the URL satisfy at least one of Google’s documented removal conditions:
- Return HTTP status
404(Not Found) or410(Gone). - Serve a robots directive of
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">.
Then submit the deletion notification through the same publish endpoint, changing the type:

}An HTTP 200 response means Google received the removal notification and may remove the URL. It does not mean that the URL has already disappeared from every search result. Keep the 404, 410, or noindex condition in place so that a later crawl confirms the intended state.

Request limits and batching
Google’s initial documented defaults, accessed in 2026, are per project:

Additional quota requires an approval request. Google may increase or decrease the allocation based on document quality and the stated need. Plan for the daily reset in Pacific Time rather than assuming a rolling 24-hour window.
Publish calls require Content-Type: application/json. A single request body contains one URL. Batch submission can combine up to 100 requests, but batching does not remove the project’s daily or per-minute limits. Implement rate limiting, retry handling, and logging instead of firing unbounded retries after transient errors.

For ordinary pages, use a complete sitemap and Search Console’s URL Inspection request-indexing workflow. Google says repeatedly requesting the same URL will not make it crawl faster.
What to do if Google does not index the page
Check eligibility first
Confirm that the URL really contains the supported structured-data type. A successful API call cannot overcome a page that is an article, product page, or other unsupported format.
Check crawlability and page state
- Open the URL without authentication and verify that it is reachable.
- For an update, confirm that the URL is crawlable and not blocked by an access rule or accidental
noindex. - For a deletion, verify that the intended 404, 410, or
noindexstate is actually being served. - Check that redirects, canonical signals, and structured data point to the intended URL.
Separate delivery from indexing
Use the metadata endpoint to confirm that Google received the notification, but do not interpret that result as proof of a crawl or index entry. A 200 publish response and a metadata record answer only whether the API accepted your message.
Use the right discovery tool
If the page is not an eligible job or livestream page, stop sending Indexing API requests. Submit or maintain the sitemap and use Search Console URL Inspection as an owner or full user. For eligible pages, correct the page or structured data, send a fresh URL_UPDATED notification after the correction, and allow Google’s normal quality and crawling systems to decide the outcome.

Do not try to outrun quotas
Do not create multiple accounts to bypass limits, and do not generate repeated requests for an unchanged URL. Those tactics do not establish indexing and can lead to revoked API access.
