Google Home Hub is the name of Google’s original smart display; Google later renamed the product line Nest Hub. The current comparison is not between two equivalent, current-generation devices: it is between the original Home Hub and a later model such as Nest Hub (2nd gen). Both are designed to put Google Assistant, information, media, photos, and compatible smart-home controls on a screen. The second-generation Nest Hub is specifically documented as a Matter hub for Wi-Fi and Thread devices.
What are Google Home Hub and Nest Hub?
Google announced Home Hub in 2018 as a voice-controlled display for getting information and media at home. Google’s announcement described using it for Search, YouTube, Google Photos, Calendar, and Maps, alongside controls for compatible connected devices. Google later adopted the Nest Hub name for this display line. The original device is often called Nest Hub (1st gen), while the later model relevant here is Nest Hub (2nd gen). Google’s 2018 Home Hub announcement and Google Home and Nest Help’s product introduction clarify the naming and role.
In practical terms, either generation is a stationary screen with a voice assistant, rather than a tablet or portable smart display. It can be useful in a kitchen, bedroom, or shared room where someone wants timers, glanceable information, media, photos, or a way to control compatible home devices. Google’s examples for the original model included Philips Hue lights, a Nest thermostat, a compatible TV, cameras, and a video doorbell; those launch-era examples are not a guarantee that every current device or service works the same way.
What does a Nest Hub do in a smart home?
Shows information and plays media
The display brings visual results and controls to Google Assistant interactions, while supporting media and photo-display use. Google described the original Home Hub as drawing on services such as YouTube and Google Photos, and as a digital photo frame that refreshes displayed photos. These are Google-described uses, not independent performance assessments. Google’s launch announcement

Provides a control point for compatible devices
A Nest Hub can present controls for compatible connected devices through Google Home. Compatibility depends on the accessory, its model, and the features it supports; the display’s general smart-home role does not mean every device can be controlled or configured in the same way.
Connects certain Matter devices
Google lists Nest Hub (2nd gen) as a Matter hub for Google Home over Wi-Fi and Thread. Thread is a low-power networking protocol, and a Thread border router connects Thread devices to a Thread network. This distinction matters if an accessory specifically requires Thread: check the exact accessory model and its Google Home compatibility before buying. Matter support alone does not guarantee that every accessory or feature will work in every setup. Google’s Matter overview

How does Nest Hub (2nd gen) compare with the original Home Hub?
The clearest documented differences are the second-generation model’s stated specifications and its Matter hub support. Google’s current specifications page provides detailed information for Nest Hub (2nd gen), but not a complete side-by-side hardware comparison with the original Home Hub. The table therefore avoids implying an exact hardware delta where the available specifications do not establish one.

Which model should you choose?
Choose based on connected-device needs
If Thread or Matter connectivity is important, Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the model in this comparison explicitly documented as a Google Home Matter hub over Wi-Fi and Thread. Before choosing it for a specific accessory, confirm compatibility for that accessory’s exact model and the functions you need.

Consider the display’s location and use
Nest Hub (2nd gen) has no battery and needs a power outlet, so plan to keep it near an outlet. Its 7-inch screen and speaker suit a fixed spot for glanceable information, photos, media, or voice-assistant use; the specifications do not establish how its real-world performance compares with the original Home Hub.
Check current Assistant feature availability
Google’s current Gemini for Home compatibility page lists Nest Hub (1st gen) and Nest Hub (2nd gen) among compatible displays, subject to firmware requirements. Feature rollouts and subscription conditions may vary. Check Google’s page for the device, account, region, and feature conditions that apply before buying for a particular Gemini for Home capability. Google’s Gemini for Home compatibility information

“Google Home Hub” generally points to the original device, not a separate current model equivalent to Nest Hub (2nd gen). When comparing listings or looking up specifications, identify the generation explicitly. Google’s current product specifications and Store display category can help distinguish what is currently presented by Google, but they do not establish price, stock, or availability in every region.
