Start with Home History, then check the separate recording-use consent, personalization and linked-service permissions, and any camera-AI controls. These settings govern different things: what Gemini for Home activity is saved, how long it is retained, whether recordings may help improve Google services, which personal information the assistant can return, and whether eligible cameras contribute to AI features. Gemini for Home is still rolling out, so labels and availability can differ by account, region, language, device, subscription and Google Home app version.
What each privacy control actually changes
There is no single “privacy” switch for Gemini for Home. Review the controls separately because each has a different scope. Home History manages Gemini for Home activity saved to your account. A second consent setting governs whether specified voice, audio and Gemini Live recordings may be used to improve Google services, including generative-AI model training. Personalization settings control identity matching and personal results. Data-and-access settings affect cross-device conversations, display video history, response filtering and connected services. Camera features determine whether eligible Nest cameras can supply activity to Gemini features such as Home Brief. Guest Mode is a temporary household mode with important limits.
| Control | What it governs | Where to review it |
|---|---|---|
| Home History | Saving, reviewing, deleting and auto-deleting Gemini for Home activity | Google Home app: profile picture or initial > Home settings > Privacy > Home History; also available in My Activity in a browser |
| Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings | Permission for specified recordings to be used to develop and improve services, including generative-AI model training | Home History in My Activity |
| Voice Match, Face Match and Personal Results | Who is recognized and which personal information the assistant can return | Google Home app: profile picture or initial > Home settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant |
| Conversation across devices and Video history | Whether conversations continue across devices and whether displays can use camera history for results | Gemini for Home voice assistant > Data & access |
| Response filtering and parental controls | How responses are filtered for guests, everyone, children or no one | Gemini for Home voice assistant settings |
| Linked services | Access to Calendar, communication, home control, media, notes and lists, Photos and Tasks | Gemini for Home voice assistant > Linked services |
| Gemini for Home camera features | Whether eligible cameras contribute activity to Gemini camera features and Home Brief | Home > Cameras > select camera > player overlay > More > Settings > Events |
| Guest Mode | Temporary reduction of account-based personal results and device-owner activity saving | Enable or disable by voice on supported speakers and displays |
Google’s published descriptions explain how these controls are intended to work; they are not an independent privacy or security audit. If a setting is missing, the feature may not yet be available for your account, country, language, device or app version.

1. Review Home History first
Open Home History in the Google Home app
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Home settings.
- Open Privacy, then Home History.
Google also directs users to Home History in My Activity through a web browser. The control appears only after an account has been upgraded to the new Gemini for Home voice assistant, which is being introduced gradually.

Choose an auto-delete period
When Home History is enabled, Google documents an 18-month default auto-delete period. The available alternatives are 3 months, 36 months or no auto-delete. The 18-month figure is Google’s current support-documentation setting, not a measured retention study.
| Option | Practical effect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | Removes older Home History activity sooner through automatic deletion | People who want a short troubleshooting and review window |
| 18 months (default) | Google’s documented default automatic-deletion period | Accounts left at the standard setting |
| 36 months | Keeps activity available for a longer period before automatic deletion | People who refer to older interactions |
| No auto-delete | Does not schedule automatic deletion of Home History | Users who deliberately want long-term history and will delete it manually |
Changing the period affects future automatic deletion; it does not replace a manual cleanup if you want older entries removed now.
Inspect and delete individual activity
Home History lets you review the activity associated with Gemini for Home and delete all activity, a selected time period, a particular day or a specific item. Use the narrowest option that matches your goal: deleting one accidental query avoids removing useful history, while deleting a date range is faster after a household move or a device handoff.
Google says deletion begins by removing activity from view, followed by a process intended to remove it from storage systems. Do not interpret the interface disappearing immediately as proof that every copy has vanished at that instant.
Turn Home History off deliberately
In Home History, choose the option to turn history off. Google presents two choices: turn Home History off by itself, or turn it off and delete existing activity. Select the second when you want both a change in future handling and removal of the history already shown in the account.
Turning Home History off is not the same as guaranteeing that no Home data is retained at all. Google’s Privacy Hub says Home activity can still be saved in the account for up to 24 hours, whether Home History is on or off, for service delivery, safety and security, and feedback processing. This is Google’s stated handling, not an independently measured retention result.
2. Check the separate recording-use consent
Home History and recording-use consent answer different questions. Home History asks whether Gemini for Home activity is saved and managed as account history. The separate control asks whether specified recordings can be used to improve Google services.

Find the recording-use setting
- Open Home History in My Activity, either from the Google Home privacy path or in a browser.
- Look for Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings.
- Check the switch independently of other Google or Gemini activity settings.
Google documents this control as off by default. Home History must be enabled before it can be switched on. If enabled, Google says voice, audio and Gemini Live recordings may be used to develop and improve services, including training generative-AI models. You can turn the permission off again at any time.
“When Home History is on, Google uses your activity to develop and improve its services, including training generative artificial intelligence (AI) models.” — Google’s Gemini for Home activity help page
Do not infer this setting from Gemini Apps’ “Keep Activity” control or from another Google Account activity toggle. Those are separate product controls. Review the recording-use switch itself if your concern is model improvement or the use of voice, audio and Gemini Live recordings.
3. Audit identity, personalization and connected access
Open Google Home app > profile picture or initial > Home settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant. The settings are divided into areas such as speech and conversation, personalization, activity and access, and linked services. Work through each area rather than assuming that disabling history also blocks personal information.
Voice Match, Face Match and Personal Results
- Voice Match helps identify who is speaking. Review it by device, especially on speakers used by visitors or children.
- Face Match affects recognition on devices with supported visual features. Check which household members and devices are enrolled.
- Personal Results controls whether a recognized person can receive account-specific information. Disable it on shared devices when the convenience is not worth the exposure risk.
These settings concern identity and personal-result access; they do not determine the retention period for Home History or whether recordings may be used to improve services.
Conversation across devices
Under Data & access, Google documents a Conversation across devices control. Review it if you use multiple speakers, displays or phones and do not want context to follow a request between devices. A household that values continuity for routines may leave it on; a shared or frequently visited home may prefer to limit cross-device context.
Video history on displays
Google’s Video history setting lets compatible displays show search results based on camera history. When it is off, Google says the display provides audio responses instead. This is distinct from turning a camera off: it changes how a display can use camera-history information for answers.

Response filtering, children and guests
Response filtering can be applied to guests, everyone or turned off. Google says voice-matched children always receive the filtered experience. Check this setting on homes where children can access an assistant without an adult present. Parental controls add another layer and should be reviewed alongside Voice Match and Personal Results, not treated as substitutes for them.

Connected services expand what Gemini for Home can access or return. Google lists categories including:
- Calendar
- Communication
- Home control
- Media
- Notes & lists
- Photos
- Tasks
Open each category and remove connections that are no longer needed. For example, unlinking a calendar or task service can prevent personal schedule information from being returned, while unlinking home control can reduce the actions available from voice commands. The exact services and labels can vary by account and region.
4. Review camera AI features and Home Brief
Check eligibility before looking for the switch
Gemini for Home camera features are not universal. Google says they are rolling out to Google Home Premium subscribers with Advanced plans, are available only to adult Admins, require an eligible Nest camera and require acknowledgement of the relevant disclosures. Google lists Nest cameras set up in Google Home and launched in 2021 or later, as well as legacy Nest cameras transferred to Google Home, as eligible categories. Actual availability still depends on country, device, account and rollout status.
Open the per-camera control
- In the Google Home app, open Home.
- Tap Cameras and select a camera.
- Open the player overlay and tap More.
- Choose Settings, then Events.
- Open Gemini for Home camera features.
- Enable or disable the feature and select the eligible devices that may participate.
Google also provides controls to switch camera features off for all cameras or for individual cameras. This is a separate review from voice-assistant history because camera data may include audio, video and information derived from those signals.
Understand Home Brief’s dependency
Google says that turning camera features off for a camera excludes that camera’s activity from Home Brief. To disable Home Brief altogether, switch off Gemini camera features for all cameras. If you want Home Brief for only a subset of cameras, leave the feature enabled only on those devices and turn it off for the rest.
Camera access should be evaluated independently from microphone and assistant history. A camera can be excluded from Gemini camera features while the assistant’s other account and device settings remain unchanged.

5. Know what standby and accidental activation mean
Google says Gemini for Home is designed to wait in standby until it detects an activation such as “Hey Google.” In standby, Google says the assistant does not send what you are saying to Google or anyone else. After activation, it sends the request to Google servers.
Google also acknowledges accidental activation, such as a sound that resembles the wake phrase. It says transcripts of these recordings are used to help reduce unintended activations. These are Google’s descriptions of system behavior and processing; the published material is not an independent technical test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor rooms where accidental activation would be especially sensitive, use the device’s physical microphone control when available, or move the speaker away from conversations that do not need voice access. Remember that changing standby behavior does not automatically change Home History, recording-use consent, camera permissions or linked-service access.
6. Use Guest Mode with its limits in mind
What Guest Mode does
On supported smart speakers and displays, Guest Mode can be enabled or disabled by voice. Google says that while it is enabled, audio recordings and assistant activity are automatically deleted from the device owner’s account, and personal results such as Calendar events or contacts are suppressed.
What Guest Mode does not do
Guest Mode is not a universal no-logging mode. Google says interactions with other Google services, third-party media services or third-party smart-home services may still be saved by those services. It is also not available in every language or country. If visitors will control lights, media or other integrations, review those services’ own activity and retention controls.
Enable Guest Mode before visitors begin using the assistant and disable it afterward if you want normal personal results and account behavior restored. Confirm that the device supports the feature in your language and region rather than assuming the voice command will work everywhere.
7. A practical privacy review sequence
Use this order when setting up a new home, adding a device or sharing a home with guests:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Confirm rollout status. Check whether Gemini for Home and Home History appear in your Google Home app. Missing controls can reflect gradual rollout or eligibility limits.
- Set Home History retention. Choose 3, 18, 36 months or no auto-delete based on how long you genuinely need the history.
- Delete old activity. Remove individual items, a day, a time range or all activity as appropriate.
- Decide on recording use. Review the separate voice, audio and Gemini Live recording consent; do not rely on another activity toggle.
- Limit personal access. Check Voice Match, Face Match, Personal Results and conversation-across-devices settings for each shared device.
- Filter responses. Choose the guest, everyone or off setting, and verify that children receive the intended filtered experience.
- Trim linked services. Remove Calendar, communication, media, Photos, Tasks, notes, lists or home-control connections that no longer serve a clear purpose.
- Audit cameras separately. Review each camera’s Gemini features, Home Brief participation and display Video history.
- Prepare for visitors. Use Guest Mode where supported, then remember that connected third-party services may retain their own interactions.
- Repeat after changes. Recheck the settings after adding a camera, transferring a legacy Nest device, changing household members or switching Google Home app versions.
Common problems and how to resolve them
Home History is missing
- Verify that the account has been upgraded to the new Gemini for Home voice assistant.
- Update the Google Home app and confirm that you are signed into the account that administers the home.
- Check whether the feature has rolled out in your country, language and device configuration.
A missing menu does not prove that history is disabled; it may simply mean the Gemini for Home controls are not yet available to that account.
The recording-use switch cannot be enabled
Google requires Home History to be enabled before the recording-use control can be switched on. Return to Home History, confirm its state, then revisit the separate consent setting.
Camera features are unavailable
- Confirm that the account is an adult Admin.
- Check whether the home has the required Google Home Premium Advanced subscription.
- Verify that the camera is an eligible model set up in Google Home or a legacy Nest camera transferred to Google Home.
- Look for rollout, regional or disclosure-acknowledgement requirements in the app.
Deleting history did not remove everything instantly
Google describes deletion as removal from view followed by a process intended to remove data from storage systems. Allow that process to complete and remember the separate statement that some Home activity may be saved for up to 24 hours for service delivery, safety and security, and feedback processing.
A display gives audio instead of camera-based results
Check the Video history control under Gemini for Home voice assistant > Data & access. Google says displays return audio responses when Video history is off. This setting is independent of whether Gemini camera features are enabled for a camera.
What these settings can and cannot establish
The controls let you make concrete choices about account history, retention, recording-use consent, personal-result access, linked services and camera participation. They do not amount to an independent guarantee about every internal processing path or every service connected to the home. Google’s documentation describes its intended handling, including standby, accidental activation, deletion and short-term retention; no independent audit or named research statistic establishes a different measured outcome in the reviewed material.
For the most privacy-conscious setup, use the shortest practical Home History period, leave the separate recording-use consent off unless you specifically want to contribute recordings to service improvement, restrict Personal Results and linked services on shared devices, disable camera features on cameras that should not feed Home Brief, and use Guest Mode for visitors when it is supported. Choose each setting for the data type it actually controls rather than treating any single switch as a master privacy setting.
