Google Gemma 3n is an open-weight multimodal model designed to run locally on compatible phones, tablets, laptops, and edge devices with less active accelerator memory. Google announced its preview on May 20, 2025, and released the full developer version on June 26, 2025. Its E2B and E4B variants use roughly 2B and 4B effective footprints despite containing about 5B and 8B raw parameters.
That distinction explains both the appeal and the common misunderstanding. Gemma 3n can reduce the high-speed memory needed during inference, but a local installation may still require several gigabytes of storage, and performance depends heavily on hardware, runtime, quantization, context length, and thermal limits.
Key takeaways
- Google previewed Gemma 3n on May 20, 2025, then released the full developer version on June 26, 2025; as of August 18, 2026, it is an established open-weight model rather than a new launch.
- Gemma 3n E2B contains approximately 5 billion raw parameters but has an effective operating footprint near 2B, while E4B contains approximately 8B raw parameters with an effective footprint near 4B.
- Google describes dynamic memory footprints as low as approximately 2GB for E2B and 3GB for E4B, but those figures are implementation-dependent operating-memory targets, not universal RAM or download requirements.
- Gemma 3n accepts text, images, audio, and video and produces text, making it suitable for offline assistants, transcription, translation, and multimodal understanding.
- Ollama is the simplest local test route; Hugging Face Transformers is better for Python development, while LM Studio offers a graphical desktop interface.
- The model’s documented training-data cutoff is June 2024, and local execution does not guarantee current information, accurate answers, or complete privacy from the surrounding application.

The dates matter because older search results can make Gemma 3n look like a new August 2026 announcement. The current framing is a retrospective: Gemma 3n is a 2025 model whose defining feature is resource-efficient, on-device multimodal inference. Google’s original announcement describes the relationship between Gemma 3n’s architecture and the next generation of Gemini Nano, but Gemma 3n is not automatically installed on every Android phone.

What do E2B, E4B, raw parameters, and effective parameters mean?
Gemma 3n has two principal variants: E2B and E4B. The names describe their approximate effective operating footprints, not their complete raw parameter counts. E2B contains about 5 billion total parameters and E4B about 8 billion, while their active configurations can operate more like approximately 2B and 4B models.
| Variant | Approximate raw parameters | Approximate effective footprint | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| E2B | 5B | Near 2B | Limited-memory devices, shorter text tasks, lower battery use |
| E4B | 8B | Near 4B | More capable multimodal work when extra memory and latency are acceptable |
E4B also contains a smaller E2B submodel. Developers can use the extracted E2B path, use the full E4B configuration, or create intermediate configurations with Google’s Mix-and-Match and MatFormer tooling. Calling E4B simply “a 4B model” is therefore misleading: 4B describes an effective operating configuration, not the model’s total parameter inventory.

How does Gemma 3n use less memory?
Gemma 3n reduces active high-speed memory pressure through several architectural techniques rather than by making every model file physically tiny.
Per-Layer Embeddings keep information out of the main allocation
Per-Layer Embeddings, or PLE, are parameters that can be generated or cached separately from the model’s main operating allocation. Some of the information that improves model quality can therefore remain outside scarce GPU, TPU, or NPU memory and be brought into use when needed.
MatFormer nests a smaller model inside a larger one
MatFormer makes the model’s configurations nested. The larger E4B model contains the smaller E2B path, allowing a runtime or developer to choose a lower-cost configuration when latency, battery life, or memory matters more than maximum capability.
Selective loading avoids unnecessary multimodal components
Gemma 3n can conditionally load audio and vision parameters. A text-only request does not necessarily need every audio and vision component active, so the runtime can reduce memory pressure for simpler workloads. Image, audio, and video tasks can require more resources than a text-only request.
These features reduce active operating memory. They do not mean that the entire model download is 2GB or 3GB, and they do not guarantee that a device with only that amount of total system RAM will run the model comfortably.
Does “2GB or 3GB of memory” mean the download is that small?
No. Google describes dynamic memory footprints as low as approximately 2GB for E2B and 3GB for E4B, depending on the implementation. Those figures describe an architectural operating target, not a universal minimum for total RAM, VRAM, or disk space.
For comparison, the current Ollama Gemma 3n listing shows approximately 5.6GB for E2B and 7.5GB for E4B, along with a 32K context-window listing. The exact disk and memory footprint varies with the runtime, file format, quantization, context, and hardware acceleration.

| Active accelerator memory | Google describes targets as low as approximately 2GB for E2B and 3GB for E4B | Runtime overhead, operating-system use, context, and multimodal inputs add pressure |
| Download or disk space | Not specified by the 2GB/3GB architectural figures | Ollama lists about 5.6GB for E2B and 7.5GB for E4B |

| Context processing | The official overview and Ollama listing identify a 32K context | Longer prompts increase latency and memory use; 32K may be impractical on limited hardware |
What can Gemma 3n do offline?
Gemma 3n accepts text, images, audio, and video inputs and generates text outputs. That combination supports local text chat, summarization, image-to-text understanding, audio transcription, speech translation, video understanding, and applications that react to camera or microphone input.
| Input | Examples of local tasks | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Chat, summarization, extraction, drafting | Knowledge is not current beyond the documented training cutoff |
| Images | Image descriptions and visual question answering | Ambiguous or low-quality images can produce incorrect interpretations |
| Audio | Transcription, analysis, and speech translation | Noisy recordings and additional audio processing affect results |
| Video | Understanding visual and audio content over time | Video processing can increase memory use and latency substantially |
Gemma 3n is not itself a complete voice assistant, text-to-speech engine, image generator, web browser, or autonomous agent. A voice assistant needs separate speech-input and speech-output components. Browsing, tool use, application control, and current-data retrieval also require surrounding software.
Google’s Gemma 3n capability overview describes the supported modalities and on-device use cases.
Can Gemma 3n run on phones?
Gemma 3n is designed for compatible phones, tablets, laptops, and edge devices, but “designed for phones” is not the same as “runs smoothly on every phone.” The real experience depends on available system RAM, GPU or NPU support, operating system, runtime, quantization, context length, active modalities, competing applications, battery state, and thermal throttling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA phone may load a model but still deliver an unpleasant experience. Insufficient memory can prevent loading, force slower system-memory use, or cause the operating system to terminate the application. A phone can also respond quickly for a short test and then slow down as sustained inference raises temperature and triggers thermal throttling.
There is no universal list of phones that guarantees a particular response speed. Google’s architecture documentation verifies the intended memory-saving design, not a minimum specification that applies equally to every mobile runtime.
A practical device checklist
- Check free storage before downloading E2B or E4B; model files may occupy several gigabytes.
- Check available memory while other applications are open, not only the device’s advertised RAM.
- Start with E2B for a limited-memory phone or an application focused on short text prompts.
- Use a shorter context during testing; a 32K maximum does not mean that 32K tokens will be fast or affordable in memory.
- Test image, audio, and video workloads separately because multimodal components can increase resource use.
- Measure sustained performance after several minutes, not only the first response.
How do you run Gemma 3n locally with Ollama?
Ollama is the simplest command-line route for a first local test on a compatible desktop or laptop. Install Ollama for the operating system, open a terminal, and run one of the model commands listed on the official model page.
ollama run gemma3n:e2b
E2B is the sensible starting point when memory, storage, battery use, or response latency is the priority. To try the larger configuration, run:
ollama run gemma3n:e4b
Ollama downloads the model when needed and opens a local chat session. The first request can be slower because the model must initialize and cache components. Later requests may behave differently depending on whether the model remains loaded and whether the device begins throttling.
Ollama also exposes a local API. The model page provides this example:
curl http://localhost:11434/api/chat
-d '{
"model": "gemma3n",
"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}]
}'
Use the Ollama model page to verify the current tags, sizes, commands, and API behavior before scripting against them. Ollama is a route for running the model, not a required purchase and not the only deployment option.

How can developers use Gemma 3n with Transformers?
Hugging Face Transformers supports Gemma 3n from version 4.53.0 onward. This route is intended for Python development, evaluation, multimodal experimentation, and custom applications, so it normally requires more setup than Ollama or LM Studio.
First update Transformers:
pip install -U transformers
Access to the official Hugging Face repository requires an account login and acceptance of Google’s Gemma usage conditions. A basic model-card loading example is:
from transformers import AutoProcessor, AutoModelForMultimodalLM
processor = AutoProcessor.from_pretrained(
"google/gemma-3n-E4B-it"
)
model = AutoModelForMultimodalLM.from_pretrained(
"google/gemma-3n-E4B-it",
device_map="auto"
)
The example does not remove the need to install compatible dependencies, authenticate to Hugging Face, provide suitable hardware, and prepare inputs using the processor. Developers should use the official Gemma 3n E4B model card for the current loading instructions and access conditions.
Is LM Studio a better choice for desktop users?
LM Studio is the more convenient option for users who want a graphical interface for downloading and chatting with local models. Google lists LM Studio as a supported route, and the LM Studio Gemma 3n E4B page exposes GGUF and Apple-silicon MLX variants, including 4-bit, 6-bit, 8-bit, and BF16 options.
Choose the quantization and format according to available RAM or unified memory, not simply by choosing the largest file. Lower-precision builds generally reduce resource requirements, but quality and speed depend on the quantization method, runtime, hardware kernels, and task. A larger precision format may preserve more quality while using more memory and storage.

| LiteRT-LM and Google AI Edge | Production-oriented mobile and edge deployment | More engineering work than a laptop chat test |
Google’s Gemma runtime documentation covers framework and deployment choices.
Which variant should you choose?
Choose E2B when the device has limited RAM or VRAM, the application mainly handles short text prompts, or fast responses and lower battery use matter more than maximum quality. E2B is also the safer first test for a phone or edge product with tight resource limits.
Choose E4B when the device has more memory and better reasoning, coding, image, audio, or video understanding justifies additional latency, storage, and thermal load. E4B is not automatically better for every task: a slower or frequently throttled model can be less useful than a smaller model that responds reliably.
Choose a quantized build when storage and memory are constrained and the selected runtime supports the required format. Quantization can lower resource requirements, but quality changes vary by quantization method and workload. The official run documentation should be consulted before selecting precision and framework combinations.
Is Gemma 3n genuinely offline and private?
Local inference can keep prompts, images, audio, and video on the device instead of sending inference requests to a remote model server. That can enable offline use and reduce exposure of sensitive data, but privacy is a property of the complete application rather than the model alone.
A surrounding app may still connect to cloud services, upload diagnostics, collect telemetry, download updates, retain logs, or request broad permissions. Developers must separately inspect network behavior, logging, data retention, permissions, and crash reporting. An offline model can also produce inaccurate or unsafe outputs, so local execution is not a substitute for validation or security controls.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What are Gemma 3n’s important limitations?
- Stale knowledge: The model card gives Gemma 3n a June 2024 training-data cutoff. Gemma 3n should not be treated as a current-events or live web-information source without retrieval software.
- Hallucinations: Gemma 3n can generate misinformation and incorrect answers, including answers that sound confident.
- Language-evaluation limits: Google reports training data in more than 140 spoken languages and multimodal understanding across 35 languages, but safety evaluations were conducted largely with English prompts. Results should not automatically be generalized to every supported language.
- Multimodal errors: Ambiguous images, noisy audio, and complex video can produce incorrect interpretations.
- Variable local performance: Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp, MLX, mobile runtimes, and production edge stacks can use different quantizations, kernels, and hardware acceleration paths.
- Context cost: A 32K context window is a supported maximum listing, not a promise that every device can process 32K tokens quickly or within its practical memory budget.
- First-request overhead: Initialization and PLE caching can make the first response slower than subsequent responses.
- Missing assistant features: Browsing, tool use, speech synthesis, autonomous actions, and current-data access require additional software.
Should you use Gemma 3n or a cloud model?
Gemma 3n is the stronger fit when offline operation, local data handling, device independence, or predictable privacy boundaries matter. A cloud model is usually the safer choice when the application needs current information, long or complex reasoning, consistent high throughput, web access, tool use, or large-scale concurrency.

| Production edge deployment | Google AI Edge or LiteRT-LM | These tools are more appropriate than a desktop chat wrapper for engineered mobile deployment |
Gemma 3n’s advantage is not that it replaces every cloud model. Its advantage is that a capable multimodal model can be configured for local execution with a smaller active memory footprint than its raw parameter count suggests.
What does Gemma 3n mean for developers?
For developers, the important design opportunity is adaptive inference. An application can use a smaller effective configuration for routine text requests and reserve a larger configuration or additional modalities for tasks that justify the cost. That approach can improve battery, latency, and memory behavior compared with keeping every parameter and modality active for every request.
Production testing should measure the complete workload rather than relying on the headline memory figure. Test cold start and warm requests, text and multimodal inputs, short and long contexts, sustained sessions, background applications, network-disabled operation, permission behavior, and failure recovery. A model that loads in a laboratory configuration may still fail on a real phone when the operating system and other apps consume memory.
Do not treat Google-reported benchmarks as independent proof of superiority in every task. The June 26, 2025 announcement reported that Gemma 3n was the first model under 10B parameters to exceed 1300 on LMArena; that is a Google-reported benchmark claim tied to its stated evaluation context, not a universal real-world performance guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gemma 3n a 2B or 4B model?
Gemma 3n is not simply a 2B or 4B model. E2B contains approximately 5B raw parameters with an effective footprint near 2B, while E4B contains approximately 8B raw parameters with an effective footprint near 4B.
Can Gemma 3n run completely offline on a phone?
Gemma 3n can support offline inference on compatible phones, but smooth performance is not guaranteed on every phone. The result depends on RAM, hardware acceleration, runtime, quantization, context length, active modalities, and thermal behavior, while the surrounding app must also be checked for cloud connections and telemetry.
Does Gemma 3n generate speech or images?
Gemma 3n accepts text, image, audio, and video inputs but produces text outputs. Speech synthesis, image generation, browsing, and autonomous actions require additional models or application components.
How much storage does Gemma 3n need?
Storage varies by runtime and format. The Ollama listing shows approximately 5.6GB for E2B and 7.5GB for E4B, so Google’s approximately 2GB and 3GB dynamic-memory figures should not be interpreted as download sizes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Bottom line: Gemma 3n is a meaningful step toward practical local multimodal AI because its PLE, MatFormer, and selective-loading design can reduce active accelerator-memory requirements. The headline needs precision: E2B and E4B contain roughly 5B and 8B raw parameters, the 2GB/3GB figures are implementation-dependent operating targets, and the model files can still occupy several gigabytes. Start with E2B through Ollama on limited hardware, use E4B when quality justifies the cost, and validate the complete application rather than assuming every phone will run it smoothly or privately.
