For most creators who already own a suitable computer, a spare PC is the simpler starting point for a 24/7 YouTube stream—provided it can encode the video and your local power and internet are dependable. Google Cloud Compute Engine can be useful when remote management or an existing cloud workflow matters more than simplicity, but it is a configurable virtual machine, not a ready-made YouTube encoder. Its total cost depends on the machine, region, storage, and network use.

If you want continuous playback without maintaining either a home PC or a virtual machine, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. Details are below.

Compute Engine vs. a spare PC: the practical difference

Both approaches can send an encoder feed to YouTube Live. With a spare PC, the computer runs the encoder locally. With Compute Engine, you rent and configure a virtual machine (VM) in Google Cloud, install or configure an encoder there, and send the feed to YouTube. In either case, you need the YouTube server URL and a private stream key.

Do not confuse a Compute Engine VM with Google Cloud Live Stream API. The API is a separate managed encoding service with its own channel and output charges; it is not a VM price or a turnkey setting inside Compute Engine. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing for its separate pricing model.

Decision factor Spare PC Compute Engine VM
Initial hardware No purchase if you already have a suitable machine; otherwise include the purchase cost. No local encoder PC is required, although a device for setup and control is useful.
Recurring costs Electricity based on actual wall power and your tariff, plus any broadband or backup-power costs. VM runtime and applicable disk, image, and network charges; price depends on region and configuration.
Setup and upkeep Install and configure an encoder; keep the PC and local connection running, and plan for restarts and updates. Configure the VM and encoder remotely; arrange access, updates, restarts, and monitoring.
Encoding capacity Depends on the PC’s CPU or GPU, encoder support, and chosen settings. Depends on VM resources and whether the chosen environment supports your encoder workflow.
Connectivity and failures Depends on local upload capacity, ISP availability, power, and PC hardware. Depends on VM configuration, software, cloud-network setup, and service dependencies; cloud hosting alone does not establish guaranteed uptime.
Likely fit You already own a capable computer, can leave it running, and want a straightforward setup. You value remote management or already operate a cloud workflow and accept the configuration and billing work.

This is a decision framework, not a measured cost or reliability ranking. Without your PC’s power draw and electricity rate, and the VM’s region, machine type, storage, and traffic, there is no honest universal winner on monthly cost.

How to compare the real monthly cost

Estimate the spare PC’s electricity

For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. If you do not know the machine’s draw, measure it with a plug-in power meter while it is doing the actual streaming workload. Idle power and the rating on a power supply may not reflect continuous operating consumption. Add any relevant broadband or backup-power costs separately.

Price the complete Compute Engine configuration

Use the Google Cloud pricing calculator with the intended region, machine type, disk or image, runtime, and expected network use. The VM instance pricing page covers machine pricing and usage billing. Google’s disk and image pricing page explicitly excludes VM instance and networking charges, so a disk estimate alone is not a complete VM total. Check the current calculator and pricing pages for your actual configuration rather than relying on a generic monthly figure.

Keep the Live Stream API separate

If you are considering Google Cloud Live Stream API instead of operating an encoder on a VM or PC, price its active-channel time and outputs separately. Its charges vary by resolution and codec, and distribution outputs or endpoints can add costs. The API pricing page states there is no free usage tier; rates are subject to change. It is not the price of Compute Engine.

Configure YouTube Live for a continuous encoder stream

  1. Enable live streaming if this is your first broadcast. YouTube may require you to enable the feature in advance. Follow the current YouTube Studio live-streaming setup before your planned start time.
  2. Create or open the stream in YouTube Studio. In the encoder workflow, obtain the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream, so do not publish or share it.
  3. Configure the encoder on the PC or VM. Enter YouTube’s ingestion server URL and the stream key, then select a supported protocol and encoding settings. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Confirm the encoder and YouTube guidance support the combination you choose.
  4. Set bitrate for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. That is a recommendation for that specific combination, not a universal minimum or a bitrate that applies to every resolution or codec. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current tables.
  5. Allow upload headroom and test end to end. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. Test the actual encoder feed, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and monitor audio and video; a speed test alone does not prove an uninterrupted broadcast.
  6. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For custom encoders, the developer guidance requires a valid RTMPS ingestion endpoint and port 443, and calls for the server hostname for SNI authentication. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
  7. Plan around YouTube’s archive limit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive matters, split the broadcast into sessions under that limit and keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Choose the setup that matches your constraints

Choose the spare PC when you already have one that can do the job

  • Check that its CPU, GPU, or hardware encoder handles your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec without overload.
  • Confirm your measured upload capacity has enough headroom for the primary and any backup stream you configure.
  • Account for continuous electricity use and the practical risk of local power, ISP, hardware, or unattended-restart problems.
  • Use YouTube’s preview and health indicators during a test before relying on the setup for an unattended broadcast.

Choose Compute Engine when remote operation justifies its overhead

  • Identify the required encoder workload before selecting a VM; a VM is not automatically suitable just because it is in the cloud.
  • Estimate the full bill—including VM runtime, storage or image, and network use—in the intended region.
  • Plan how you will access the machine, apply updates, recover from a process or VM interruption, and monitor the outgoing stream.
  • Verify that the encoder can reach YouTube ingestion and that the VM configuration supports your chosen encoding workflow.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the stream URL, key, and encoder connection status. Make sure live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced.
  • The feed disconnects or stream health degrades: Check the encoder’s dropped-frame or overload indicators, local upload stability for a PC, and network configuration for a VM. Compare available upload capacity with the combined primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Video stutters or encoding overload appears: The PC or VM may not sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. Reduce the encoding workload or choose a configuration the machine can handle, then test again.
  • RTMPS connection fails in a custom setup: Confirm the valid RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and hostname/SNI handling required by the connection. A generic RTMP endpoint or missing hostname may not satisfy the RTMPS implementation.
  • The stream is live but no complete archive appears: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and record locally if you need a dependable copy.
  • The monthly bill is higher than expected: Inspect VM runtime, region, disk or image, and network usage separately. The disk/image estimate does not include VM or networking charges.

Or let it run in the cloud

For uploaded recordings or playlists that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo avoids keeping a home computer or a Compute Engine VM configured and running. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the feed running from its cloud service and attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required.
