For a subscribed game calendar, use Google Calendar in a desktop browser to set multiple alerts on the game calendar, then add a separate travel-time event from the Maps side panel. A dependable setup has a planning reminder, an alert when it is time to leave, and a final pre-game reminder. Travel time is a manually created calendar block; Calendar does not currently provide a universal automatic “leave now” calculation for every event.
What you need before changing the settings
You need access to Google Calendar on a computer browser, the subscribed calendar that contains the games, and a venue address for each game. Calendar’s web interface is the place to change defaults for every event on a calendar. Phone and tablet apps can edit individual events, but the all-event notification controls documented by Google are in the browser version.
- The correct calendar: In the left-hand calendar list, identify the subscribed sports, team or league calendar. If several calendars contain similar games, select the one that actually owns the event; changing another calendar will not alter these reminders.
- A complete location: Use the stadium, arena or other venue address in the event’s Location field. A vague name may produce the wrong result in Maps, particularly when several venues share a name.
- Your normal travel assumptions: Decide whether you are driving, walking, cycling or using public transport, and allow extra time for parking, security, transfers or crowded roads. Google’s travel block is based on the route and mode you select, not on your personal buffer.
Set two or more alerts on the game calendar
Calendar supports notifications at calendar level and at event level. A calendar-level rule is the efficient choice when every subscribed game should receive the same pattern. You can add more than one notification, and each one can use a different delivery method.

- In the left panel, find My calendars and select the subscribed game calendar. Open its options if the calendar list is collapsed.
- Open Settings and sharing or the calendar’s settings entry, then go to Settings for my calendars → [game calendar].
- Scroll to Event notifications. Choose a delivery method and how far in advance the first alert should appear.
- Select Add notification and create another alert with a different lead time or channel.
- Save or leave the settings page after the change is shown. Open a future game to confirm that the event displays the expected notifications.
The available delivery choices documented by Google are an email, a desktop notification and an alert inside the Calendar window. These are separate choices: selecting desktop notifications does not automatically send an email. You can use the same channel twice, such as two desktop alerts, or combine channels for resilience.

Use calendar-level defaults for routine games
Calendar-level notifications apply a consistent pattern to events on that calendar. This is useful when most games require the same preparation, because a newly added game inherits the rules without manual editing. It also keeps a subscribed calendar manageable when fixtures are added or rescheduled by the publisher.
Override one important game at event level
For a playoff, an early kickoff or a game in an unfamiliar city, open the event, choose Edit event, and add or change notifications on that event. Event-level changes affect only your copy and do not rewrite the calendar’s default. This lets one high-priority game have an additional warning without giving every routine fixture the same extra alert.
Google’s Calendar API describes a reminder as an alarm set a specified number of minutes before an event. In practice, the web interface lets you create these reminders at the calendar or individual-event level, so the alert times are measured from the game’s scheduled start unless you attach a separate reminder to the travel block.

Add travel time as a visible calendar block
Travel is not added by changing the game’s start time. Instead, Calendar creates a separate item representing the route. That block occupies time on your calendar, making it harder to schedule something that conflicts with the journey.
- Open the game and choose Edit event.
- Enter the stadium or venue in the event’s Location field, then save the location if the event editor asks you to do so.
- Open the Maps side panel in Google Calendar. Choose Directions.
- Enter your starting point, select the travel mode and choose the route or trip that matches your plans.
- Click Add to Calendar. Calendar adds the travel time as a separate calendar item associated with the route.
- Open the new travel-time item and add a notification if you want a prompt at departure time. Use the travel item’s start, rather than the game’s start, as the point at which you need to be ready to leave.
The resulting block normally ends at the event location and leaves the game itself at its original scheduled time. If the route estimate changes later, review the block and update it; the documented workflow is a route you selected and added, not a continuously recalculated departure alarm.
Include the real-world parts of the trip
Maps estimates driving or other selected transport between the points you provide. Add a personal buffer by extending the travel event or by setting its alert earlier. Parking, walking from a remote car park, bag checks, public-transport waits and venue entry queues are not guaranteed to be represented by the basic route estimate. Treat the displayed duration as the travel leg, then add the margin your situation requires.

What “backup alerts” should look like
A backup alert is simply a second or third notification at a different lead time. Google does not publish a sports-specific default schedule, so choose times based on the decisions you need to make before leaving.

Do not set every alert only a few minutes before kickoff. A late reminder cannot help with route planning, and it may arrive after you needed to leave. Conversely, an alert several hours early is not a substitute for a departure-time prompt, which is why the travel block gets its own notification.
Understand the automatic leave-time limitation
Google’s documented Calendar workflow explains how to add travel through the Maps panel, but it does not describe an automatic, continuously updated “leave now” alert for every event. A Google Calendar Product Expert wrote on January 21, 2024: “This isn’t available automatically within Google Calendar. However, you can set a travel time using Google Maps and Google Calendar on the desktop.” That guidance means you should regard the Maps-created block as a manual plan and revisit it when conditions change.

A 2025 community discussion also described direct automatic handling of a return trip as unavailable and mentioned third-party automation as a possible workaround. Such services vary in permissions, reliability and availability, so evaluate them separately rather than assuming they are part of Google Calendar. For a built-in setup, keep the route block, its alert and your own buffer under your control.
Keep away-game times correct across time zones
Calendar stores event times internally in UTC and displays them in the relevant local time. An away game can therefore appear at a different clock time when you travel, and daylight-saving changes can shift the displayed time if the event or calendar uses the wrong zone.
- Open the game and choose Edit event.
- Check the event’s time-zone control and assign the venue’s time zone when the game is scheduled in a different region.
- Open Calendar’s general settings and confirm your Primary time zone matches the place where you normally view the calendar.
- If you regularly coordinate across regions, enable a Secondary time zone in the settings so both clock references are visible.
- After travelling, inspect the displayed start time and the travel block together. Make sure the reminder lead times still make sense in the zone where you will receive them.
An event-specific zone is especially important when the fixture publisher supplied a venue time that should remain tied to the stadium’s local clock. Changing your primary zone changes how events are displayed to you; it does not change the underlying instant at which a correctly zoned game begins.

Choose notification channels deliberately

For a high-value game, combine an email planning alert with a desktop travel alert. The extra channel protects against a closed tab, while the separate lead times protect against overlooking one notification.
Troubleshoot a missing game reminder
The event has no notification
- Open the event and inspect its notification list. An event-level setting may have replaced the calendar default.
- Return to Settings for my calendars → [game calendar] → Event notifications and confirm that at least one rule exists.
- Verify that you changed the calendar containing the game, not a similarly named personal calendar.
The desktop alert never appeared
- Check the browser permission for calendar.google.com and allow notifications.
- Keep Google Calendar open when relying on desktop notifications.
- Check operating-system notification settings and any focus, do-not-disturb or quiet-hours mode that could suppress the browser alert.
- Use an email notification as a second channel for future games if desktop alerts remain unreliable.
The reminder arrived at the wrong time
- Inspect the game’s event time zone and your Calendar primary time zone.
- Look for daylight-saving changes between your home and the venue.
- Open the travel block separately; its alert is based on the block’s start, not automatically on a recalculated route.
The travel block is missing or wrong
- Confirm that the event has a precise venue location.
- Reopen the Maps side panel, select Directions, choose the intended mode and route, and click Add to Calendar again.
- Edit the resulting travel item to add parking or walking time and to set its own alert.
A repeatable game-day setup
Use this sequence whenever a new fixture appears:
- Open the game and verify the start time, venue and event time zone.
- Confirm that the subscribed game calendar has a planning alert and a final alert.
- Use Maps in Calendar to create the route block with your actual starting point and travel mode.
- Add a departure notification to the travel block and extend the block for parking, entry or transfer time.
- For an unusually important or distant game, add an event-level notification without changing the calendar-wide defaults.
- Before leaving, review the route, traffic or transit conditions and adjust the manually created block if the estimate has changed.
This arrangement separates three decisions that are easy to confuse: when to start planning, when to leave, and when the game starts. The game remains at its official time, while the travel item makes the journey visible and schedulable.

The built-in approach is the predictable baseline: it uses Google’s documented controls and does not require granting another service access to your calendar. Automation can reduce manual work, but because availability and behavior differ, check exactly what it creates, which account it accesses and how it handles changed routes or return travel.
