Google released it in preview across the Gemini app, NotebookLM, developer tools and enterprise services; its documented limits reach 1,048,576 input tokens and 65,536 output tokens.
What is Gemini 3.1 Pro?
Gemini 3.1 Pro is a Google model designed for complex problem-solving. Google calls it a “smarter, more capable baseline for complex problem-solving,” and its model card describes it as a natively multimodal reasoning model and the company’s most advanced model for complex tasks at the time of publication.
It can take text, images, audio and video as input. Google also describes it as capable of understanding entire code repositories, making it relevant to tasks that involve reading and reasoning across a large software project rather than a single snippet.
Google’s launch announcement illustrated the model with generated animated SVGs, a live aerospace dashboard using a public International Space Station telemetry stream, interactive 3D starling-murmuration code with hand tracking, and a portfolio inspired by Wuthering Heights. These are Google demonstrations, not independent evaluations of typical results.

Is Gemini 3.1 Pro better than Gemini 3 Pro?
Google’s published results indicate a notable improvement on some reasoning and coding benchmarks, but they do not establish that Gemini 3.1 Pro is better for every task or user. Google said its 77.1% ARC-AGI-2 score was more than double Gemini 3 Pro’s reasoning performance. That is a Google-reported benchmark comparison, not a guarantee of equivalent gains in everyday use.
Google also published the following results for Gemini 3.1 Pro. These are vendor-reported figures from Google DeepMind, not independent test results:

Benchmark scores depend on the benchmark’s setup and the model’s configuration, including its thinking setting. Compare results only when the methodology and settings match. Google has also published comparisons with other models, but those vendor-reported figures are not neutral rankings.
For practical context, JetBrains’ Director of AI, Vladislav Tankov, said the company observed up to 15% improvement over its best Gemini 3 Pro Preview runs in its evaluations. That is a partner’s evaluation, not a general-purpose benchmark or a result that can be assumed for other workloads. Google’s published figures do not provide a complete side-by-side basis here for comparing cost, latency, rate limits or data-governance terms.

Google Cloud documentation lists a maximum context of 1,048,576 input tokens and a maximum output of 65,536 tokens. Google’s model card rounds those limits to 1,000,000 input tokens and 64,000 output tokens. The figures describe supported maximums, not a promise that every request will use the full context or produce the maximum output.
A large context window can let a request include more source material—such as lengthy documents or substantial code—before the model responds. It does not by itself ensure accurate recall or reasoning across every item provided.

Where can I use Gemini 3.1 Pro?
Google announced preview access across consumer, developer and enterprise products. Availability and limits can vary by product and account. At launch, Google said Gemini app users on Google AI Pro and Ultra plans would have higher limits; the announcement did not give a universal usage allowance.
| Use case | Google product or service | Availability described by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer assistant and notebooks | Gemini app; NotebookLM | Available to consumers at launch; higher Gemini app limits for Google AI Pro and Ultra plans |
| Developer tools | Gemini API through Google AI Studio; Gemini CLI; Google Antigravity; Android Studio | Preview at launch |
| Enterprise and cloud | Vertex AI; Gemini Enterprise | Preview at launch |
Google Cloud lists the standard model ID as gemini-3.1-pro-preview and marks it Preview under Google Cloud pre-GA terms. Its documentation says customers may use the preview for production or commercial purposes subject to the governing agreement. That permission is conditional; check the applicable agreement and product terms for the account and deployment you plan to use.

Is Gemini 3.1 Pro available in the Gemini app?
Yes. Google announced Gemini 3.1 Pro availability in the Gemini app, alongside NotebookLM. Google said Gemini app users on Google AI Pro and Ultra plans would receive higher limits. The announcement does not establish a single limit that applies to every user, region or account.
Can developers call Gemini 3.1 Pro through an API?
Yes. Developers can access it through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio, and Google Cloud documentation lists it on Vertex AI. The standard Google Cloud preview model ID is gemini-3.1-pro-preview.
Google Cloud also lists gemini-3.1-pro-preview-customtools for workflows combining bash and custom tools. Google says this endpoint has the same pricing as the standard preview endpoint, but Provisioned Throughput is not supported for the custom-tools endpoint. Pricing for the standard endpoint and applicable usage limits are not specified here; consult the relevant service terms before planning costs or capacity.
What should users know about safety and limitations?
Google DeepMind’s safety evaluation reports that Gemini 3.1 Pro remained below its frontier capability thresholds for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks, harmful manipulation, machine-learning research and development, and misalignment. In cyber testing, it reached an alert threshold but not the uplift required for the capability level described in the assessment. These are findings from Google’s evaluation, not proof that the model is risk-free.
The model card points readers to Gemini 3 Pro documentation for broader known limitations and acceptable-use details. As with other generative models, do not treat an answer as verified solely because it is fluent or detailed; check consequential claims and review outputs before using them in production workflows.
