Google and Apple now support cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts: an iPhone or Android phone can warn when a compatible Bluetooth tracker, including some tags paired with the other platform, has been separated from its owner and appears to be moving with you over time. The protection is not universal detection, and changing phone settings alone does not disable a tracker.
What the Apple–Google tracker-alert system does
In May 2023, Google and Apple proposed an industry specification for detecting unwanted Bluetooth location trackers across iOS and Android. The effort incorporated feedback from manufacturers, safety organizations and advocacy groups.
Apple implemented the capability in iOS 17.5, while Google launched support on Android 6.0 and later on May 13, 2024. The alert works regardless of the platform with which the tracker is paired, provided the device is compatible with the relevant detection system.
On Apple devices, the notification can say “[Item] Found Moving With You.” A notification may indicate unwanted tracking, but it can also be caused by a borrowed item, shared equipment or someone else’s AirPods traveling with you.

- Easy Find & Family Sharing with Apple Find My: Quickly pair the FineTrack tag with your iPhone or iPad in just one tap. Using the pre-installed Find My app, add the Air Tracker tag to the Items tab to instantly locate and track your keys, wallet, and other valuables. With iOS 17 or later, you can also share your tracker’s location with family members, so everyone can help keep items safe. (Note: Compatible with iOS devices only, not for Android.)
- Smart Tracking Made Easy: Whether Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag is nearby or far away, locate it easily with the Find My app. When within Bluetooth range, play a sound to quickly find the item tracker tag; when out of range, the Apple Find My network uses its vast ecosystem of Apple devices to provide the item finder’s latest location. Enjoy global tracking with Apple’s Find My network without any subscription fees.
- Lost Item Alerts & Lost Mode: When your Air Tracker Tag moves out of range, the Apple Find My app sends an instant lost alert with the last known location. If your item is confirmed lost, you can activate Lost Mode and leave your contact information so nearby Apple devices can remotely access it and help locate your tracker, making recovery quick and easy.
- 2-Year Battery Life & Child-Safe Certified: The UGREEN 4-pack Bluetooth tracker tags feature a replaceable battery that lasts up to 2 years, outperforming standard 1-year trackers. You can check the tracker’s battery anytime in the app and replace it when needed, keeping your valuables always protected. Item finder tags are also UL4200A certified, preventing children from accidentally swallowing the battery.
- Your Privacy, Fully Protected: Certified by Apple MFi, this Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag uses end-to-end encryption to keep your location data private and secure. All communications are anonymous and encrypted, and no location data is stored on the device. Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, the manufacturer, or any third party.
This is an operating-system alert capability, not an app that gives iPhone users access to Google’s tracker network or Android users access to Apple’s entire Find My network.
Will my Android phone alert me about an AirTag?
Yes, current Android guidance says alerts work with Apple AirTags, Find Hub network-compatible tags and compatible headphones. Your phone must detect a tracker that has been separated from its owner and is moving with you over time.

Android support does not mean every Bluetooth tracker can be detected. Compatibility depends on the tracker and the platform’s implementation.
How do I know if an AirTag or other tracker is following me?
On Android
- Open the unknown-tracker alert when it appears. Android shows a map of locations where the tracker was detected moving with you.
- Use Play sound to make the tracker emit a sound. Google says this does not notify the owner.
- Use Find Nearby when offered. This locating feature is limited to Find Hub-compatible trackers.
- Save the tracker information or identifier if you may need it for a report or later identification. Google notes that identifiers can change.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions in the alert to disable the tracker.
Android 11 and later can run a manual scan from the unknown-tracker controls even when Location is off. Google says the scan takes about 10 seconds. Automatic alerts require Location to be enabled.

Settings to check before relying on alerts
Android settings
- Keep Location on for automatic alerts.
- Use the system’s unknown-tracker controls for a manual scan when appropriate.
- Do not assume that turning off Bluetooth, turning off Location or enabling Airplane Mode disables the tracker. Those changes do not stop the tracker itself from sharing its location.
iPhone and iPad settings
Apple says Tracking Notifications require the following conditions:
- Location Services enabled
- Significant Locations enabled
- Bluetooth enabled
- Tracking Notifications enabled
- Airplane Mode turned off
What to do if an unknown tracker is moving with you
- Move somewhere safe. If you feel threatened, go to a public place and contact law enforcement or someone you trust.
- Inspect the alert details. Record the tracker type, identifier and map information when available.
- Make it sound. Playing a sound can help you find the physical device; Android says this does not notify the owner.
- Search carefully. Check bags, clothing, vehicles and borrowed belongings without putting yourself at risk.
- Disable the tracker itself. Use the manufacturer’s instructions supplied by the alert. Phone-level Bluetooth, Location and Airplane Mode changes are not substitutes for disabling the device.
- Preserve evidence if needed. Keep screenshots and the tracker identifier, and ask law enforcement or a safety professional how to handle the device.
Why an alert may not appear immediately
The systems are designed around a tracker being separated from its owner and detected moving with you over time. A tracker may therefore not trigger an immediate warning when it is stationary, close to its owner, newly encountered or not supported by the platform.

Official guidance does not promise detection of every Bluetooth tracker. Compatibility, operating-system version, required settings and the tracker’s behavior all matter. Android also notes that tracker identifiers can change and that physical movement with a tracker over time may be needed before an alert is sent.

Google says Find Hub location reports are end-to-end encrypted, with keys available to the tag owner and people who have been given shared access. Google says it cannot decrypt or view that location data. Its description of the network also mentions aggregation by default, protections against contributing reports near a saved home address, rate limiting and throttling, and compatibility with the unwanted-tracker alert specification. These are Google’s stated design and privacy claims about its own network, not a guarantee that every tracker or alert system has identical behavior.

Android’s temporary location-update pause
A December 11, 2024 Google update added an option for Find My Device-compatible tags to pause a phone’s location updates for up to 24 hours. This temporarily prevents that phone’s location information from being used to locate the detected tag. It does not physically disable the tracker; disabling the tracker requires the manufacturer’s procedure.
Which companies announced future-compatible tags?
In its May 2024 announcement, Apple said Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola and Pebblebee had committed that future tags would be compatible. That statement does not establish compatibility for every current product or model, so check the specific tracker’s current documentation.
