How AI Overviews differ from traditional Search results
Google describes AI Overviews as summaries that help people understand complicated topics and explore supporting links. Its systems show an overview when they determine it adds value, so many searches will not trigger one. The broader Search experience still includes web links and other result features, and the overview’s presence and layout can vary. Does Google AI Overviews replace traditional search results?
No. An AI Overview is one possible feature within Google Search, not a universal substitute for the rest of the results. It appears only when Google’s systems determine it adds value; other searches continue to show the wider Search experience without an overview. The specific presentation can also vary by search.
How do I get my website cited in an AI Overview?
There is no guaranteed way to secure a supporting link. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be eligible for AI-feature links, but eligibility does not promise crawling, indexing, or display. Make important pages accessible and discoverable
- Check that Googlebot can crawl important pages, including any restrictions in robots.txt or at your CDN or hosting provider.
- Link important pages from other relevant pages on your site so visitors and crawlers can find them.
- Make key information available as text, and ensure the site works well across devices.
- Use useful, high-quality images or video to support the text when they genuinely help explain the subject.
Prioritize useful, distinctive content
Write for the people the page is meant to help. Google’s guidance emphasizes unique perspective and non-commodity content; it does not support manufacturing experience or expertise. Do not create a separate page for every wording of a similar query or rewrite pages just to fit a supposed AI format. Google says its systems can understand synonyms and page context, and that producing many low-value pages to manipulate Search can violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. Keep structured data accurate, not “AI-specific”
Structured data is not required for AI features, and Google says no special schema is needed. If you use structured data, keep it consistent with content people can see on the page. Google’s documentation also does not require an AI text file, a particular “chunking” technique, a target page length, or exhaustive coverage of every query variation.

Keep business information current when relevant
If you sell products or serve a local area, accurate information in Merchant Center or your Business Profile can help Google surface products or services in Search experiences. These are conditional options, not general prerequisites for appearing in an AI Overview.
How can I track AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
Google said its dedicated Search Console generative AI performance insights were rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. The announcement lists impressions, pages, countries, devices for Search, and reporting periods from hourly through monthly. See Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement for the rollout and report details.
- Open the dedicated generative AI performance report in Search Console to review visibility and its available dimensions, such as pages, country, Search device, and date range.
- Use the overall Performance report’s Web search type as well: Google says AI-feature appearances and traffic are included in that broader Search data.
- Compare relevant pages and periods, then investigate changes alongside site updates and seasonality rather than attributing every movement to AI Overviews.
- Connect visits with outcomes in Analytics or another suitable analytics tool, such as conversions, signups, sales, engagement, or time spent.
An impression measures visibility in the report, not a visit, session, or sale. Google has not established a universal expected traffic increase or decrease caused by AI Overviews. John Mueller wrote on May 21, 2025, that Google had seen AI Overview referrals being higher quality in the sense that users were more likely to spend time on a site. That is Google’s qualitative characterization; the cited statement gives no numeric effect size or guarantee for an individual publisher. Read Google’s post on succeeding in AI experiences on Search.
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for Google AI Overviews?
No special schema, llms.txt file, page-length target, or “chunking” requirement is established by Google’s guidance for AI Overviews. Focus on standard Search eligibility, accessible pages, useful content, and accurate structured data if you use it. Google warns that large numbers of low-value pages made to manipulate results can violate its scaled-content-abuse policy; its generative AI optimization guide also cautions that third-party tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems.

Can I opt my website out of AI Overviews?
You can use Google’s Search preview controls to limit the information that may be displayed, but restrictions can reduce how a page is featured in Search, including AI experiences. Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex as controls that can limit displayed information. These are not a selective guarantee of opting out of only AI Overviews while preserving every other kind of display. Consider the visibility tradeoff before applying a restriction, and allow time for Google to recrawl and process a change.
