Google AI Overviews put a synthesized answer and links to supporting sources into the search results page; traditional results primarily offer ranked links and snippets for people to assess. For publishers, that changes how a page may be discovered and clicked, but the evidence does not support a universal claim that AI Overviews either reduce or increase every site’s traffic. The effect depends on the query, audience, source selection and measurement.
How an AI Overview changes the search page
In traditional Search, a user scans a list of results and chooses which pages to open. An AI Overview instead gives an answer near the top of the page and presents links to web sources that support or expand on it. A user may get enough information from the overview to stop searching, or may follow one of its links or another result.
| What differs | Traditional results | AI Overviews | What it means for publishers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main presentation | Ranked links with snippets | A generated answer with supporting links | Some users encounter an answer before deciding whether to visit a site. |
| How sources are surfaced | The searcher scans result options | Google selects sources for the answer and displays other results on the page | Indexing makes a page eligible to be considered, but does not guarantee an Overview link or a visit. |
| Search Console reporting | Clicks and positions are reported for Search results | An external link click from an Overview counts as a click; links within one Overview share a position | Interpret clicks, impressions and position with the Overview reporting rules in mind. |
| Publisher controls | Search crawl, index and preview controls | Google documents preview controls and announced a separate generative-feature inclusion control test | Check current availability and potential trade-offs before changing directives. |
AI Overviews are not the same as AI Mode. Google describes AI Mode as an interactive experience that can break a question into subtopics and search them simultaneously. Treat its usage and reporting as distinct from an Overview appearing on a results page; Google’s Search Console documentation explains the relevant Search features and reporting.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to publishers?
One independent observation found fewer traditional-result clicks on Google pages where an AI summary appeared. In its analysis of U.S. browsing data from March 2025, Pew Research Center examined 68,879 unique Google searches, including 12,593 with an AI summary. A traditional result was clicked in 8% of visits with a summary, compared with 15% of visits without one. On summary pages, a link within the summary was clicked in 1% of visits. The browsing session ended after 26% of summary pages, versus 16% of pages with traditional results only.

Pew also found that 18% of searches in its sample produced a summary; summaries appeared more often for longer or question-form searches—53% of searches with 10 or more words and 60% of queries beginning with question words. Those associations describe Pew’s March 2025 sample, not current rates across Google or a forecast for an individual site.
A separate May 2026 arXiv preprint by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal and Jacob M. Montgomery reports a crawler study of 55,393 trending queries across 19 topical categories, collected over 40 days from March 13 to April 21, 2026. It found Overviews on 13.7% of queries overall and on 64.7% of question-form queries. Because this study used a different sample and method from Pew, the figures should not be read as evidence that Overview frequency rose or fell between the studies. The preprint also found that 11.0% of 98,020 claims extracted from sampled Overviews were unsupported by the cited pages; the authors identified omission as the dominant failure mode. This is a sample-specific preprint result, not a rate for every Overview.

Google’s own aggregate account presents a different measure. In an August 6, 2025 post, Google said total organic click volume from Search to websites was relatively stable year over year and that average click quality had increased. Google describes a quality click as one where a user does not quickly click back. This is Google’s company-reported aggregate account; it does not show that each publisher’s clicks stayed stable, nor does the cited passage give a numeric rate.
A 2026 public document from the UK Competition and Markets Authority says a Google internal experiment found a decrease in publisher clicks for queries that would have triggered an Overview, but the percentage is redacted. The CMA document therefore does not establish the size of that experimental decrease.

How to measure the effect on your own site
There is no single public figure that predicts a publisher’s traffic change. Use your own Search Console and analytics data, and compare like with like. Google’s reporting notes that an external Overview link click counts as a click, all links in one Overview share a position, and normal impression rules apply. Feature appearances have been included in overall Web performance reporting.
- Choose a baseline and comparison period. Compare equivalent date ranges and account for seasonality or other known changes. Do not infer a feature effect from a before-and-after total alone.
- Segment the data. Break performance down by query intent, geography, page type and date. Where you can observe which queries trigger an Overview, compare those with relevant queries that do not; availability and triggering can vary.
- Track outcomes beyond the click. If the purpose of a visit is a subscription, lead or other conversion, use site analytics to assess whether Search visits produce that outcome. Google itself recommends considering outcomes such as time on site and conversions.
- Record the reporting context. Note changes in Search features, controls and interfaces alongside your measurements so that a reporting change is not mistaken for a change in reader behavior.
In June 2026, Google announced additional generative-AI visibility insights and a publisher control beginning tests or rollouts. Google said a site opting out of its generative Search features would lose impressions and traffic from those features. The announcement also reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode; those are Google’s own company-reported totals, not independent audience estimates. See Google’s June 3, 2026 announcement and check current Search Console availability before relying on a particular control or report.

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its AI features documentation says, “There are no additional technical requirements.” That means there is no separate technical qualification for these links; it does not mean an eligible page will be selected.
- Make the page accessible to Search. Check that it can be crawled and indexed, that hosting or CDN settings do not block access, and that important content is available as text.
- Use sound site fundamentals. Make pages discoverable through internal links, ensure structured data accurately reflects visible content, and attend to page experience. Google’s documentation does not call for a special AI-only file or schema.
- Publish distinctive material. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features emphasizes content people find unique, compelling and useful. Original expertise and useful images or video can serve readers, but no format or tactic guarantees an Overview citation.
What publishers should take away
AI Overviews add an answer-first route between a Google search and a publisher’s page. Independent U.S. browsing observations found fewer traditional-result clicks when a summary appeared, while Google’s aggregate reporting says overall organic click volume was relatively stable year over year and click quality increased. Those claims refer to different populations and measures, so neither supplies a universal forecast for a particular publisher. The practical response is to preserve eligibility, make content worth visiting, and measure changes against the site’s own queries and outcomes.
