Google AI Mode Canvas is not automatically private in every context. Canvas work is auto-saved to your AI Mode history when history is enabled, and you decide when to share a response or Canvas. A user-generated Canvas app is different: its creator can see data you submit, and anyone who has that app’s public link can view and edit data saved with it. Gemini activity controls can reduce retention and use for service improvement, but they do not eliminate all storage or safety processing.
First, identify which Canvas you are using
Google uses “Canvas” for more than one experience. Privacy depends on the surface, not just the word Canvas.
- AI Mode Canvas: A workspace attached to an AI Mode conversation in Google Search. Google says changes are auto-saved and can be resumed from AI Mode history.
- User-generated Canvas app: An app made with Gemini’s Canvas tools and shared with other people. The creator controls how submitted data is handled.
- Gemini account activity: The account-level record covering prompts, uploads, generated content and related context.
- Google Workspace Canvas or conversations: Work or school accounts governed by administrator sharing policies and organizational Drive rules.
AI Mode Canvas became available to everyone in the United States in English on March 4, 2026. Availability and controls can differ by account type, country, language and administrator policy.
What happens to an AI Mode Canvas project
Changes are auto-saved to AI Mode history
Google’s AI Mode help documentation states: “Important: Changes in Canvas are auto-saved.” When AI Mode history is enabled, your prompts, the resulting response and edits made in Canvas remain associated with that thread so you can return to it later. Auto-saving means a sensitive draft can remain in your account even if you never send a separate share link.

To find saved work, open AI Mode and go to AI Mode history. Locate the relevant thread, then use the three-dot menu beside it. The documented actions are Share and Delete. Deleting the thread removes it from the history view, but account-level retention, backups or information already disclosed elsewhere can follow different rules.
Sharing is a separate disclosure step
AI Mode provides sharing controls for both the response and the Canvas. Sharing is not the same as auto-saving: a project can stay in your history without being intentionally sent to another person. Before using Share, inspect the snapshot or view that will be exposed. Remove private prompts, names, uploaded material and generated text that the recipient does not need.
Google’s consumer help page documents the Share action but does not establish one universal audience for every consumer link. Treat a shared link as accessible to anyone who receives it, and verify the audience shown in your account before sending it through email, messaging or a public post.

User-generated Canvas apps require a different privacy decision
The creator can see what you submit
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says: “When you interact with a user-generated Canvas app, the creator of the app can see any data you share and can save it where they choose.” That can include text you type, files or images you upload, and information the app asks you to provide. The creator may use Firebase or another storage system, but the exact implementation is controlled by the creator rather than by a single Google-wide Canvas setting.
Public links can expose and change saved data
Google also states: “Anyone with the public link can also view and edit data saved with the app.” A link therefore creates two risks: unauthorized reading and unauthorized modification. Do not assume that a link is limited to the person who originally sent it, or that removing the link from a message deletes copies or prior edits.
Use this pre-submission checklist
- Identify who created the app and whether you trust that person or organization.
- Read the app’s own explanation of storage, access and deletion before entering information.
- Remove names, account numbers, health details, passwords, private business material and other confidential data.
- Use synthetic examples when testing a feature.
- Assume that data already submitted cannot be deleted by you unless the creator provides a deletion process.
- Do not distribute a public link if the app contains information that should remain private.
What Google may process from Gemini interactions
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists prompts, uploaded content, generated content, connected-app data, device data and location information among the categories it processes. Depending on the interaction and settings, related context can therefore extend beyond the words visible in a single Canvas panel.

Google warns users: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” The notice also explains that some data may be reviewed by human reviewers. The Privacy Notice was last updated October 13, 2026; read the current notice for the terms that apply to your account and region.

Controls for history, deletion and improvement use
Delete an AI Mode Canvas thread
- Open Google Search and enter AI Mode.
- Open AI Mode history.
- Find the saved Canvas thread.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the thread.
- Choose Delete and confirm the prompt shown by Google.
Deleting a history entry is different from retracting a copy that another person downloaded, copied or stored after you shared it.
Review or delete Gemini Apps Activity
- Open your Google Account’s Gemini Apps Activity controls.
- Review the recorded conversations and related activity.
- Delete individual items or a selected range using the available deletion controls.
- Set an automatic deletion period if you do not want indefinite retention.
Google lists four auto-delete choices: 3 months, 18 months (the default), 36 months or indefinite. These periods govern the activity setting you choose; they do not erase data that someone else has copied or stored.

Turn off Keep Activity or use a temporary chat
Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being reviewed to improve Google services, according to Google’s Gemini help guidance. You can also use temporary chats when you do not want a conversation added to normal activity history.
Neither option means “nothing is retained.” Google says it may still retain chats as needed to respond to you, protect users, prevent abuse, maintain security and process feedback. Other account, product or administrator settings can also save information.
Google Workspace controls
Public links are disabled by default
For Workspace accounts, Google says: “Using public links to share conversations is turned off by default.” An administrator can change that setting in Admin Console > Generative AI > Gemini app > Sharing. Your organization may also restrict sharing outside the company or school.

Drive rules still apply
When a conversation or Canvas is shared through Drive, the organization’s Drive sharing policy controls whether external recipients are allowed. A Workspace user can therefore see a Share option while still being prevented from granting public or external access.
Previously shared links can remain active
Google advises Workspace administrators and users to account for links that were shared earlier. A previously shared public link remains accessible until it is deleted from Gemini, subject to the account’s available controls. If a project contains sensitive information, remove the existing link rather than assuming a new policy retroactively closes it.
Practical privacy decisions
For a personal brainstorm
Keep the Canvas in AI Mode history, avoid identifying details, and delete the thread when the work is no longer needed. If you want fewer chats used for improvement, turn off Keep Activity or use a temporary chat, while remembering that safety and response-related retention can continue.

Do not paste confidential client, legal, medical or security information into a user-generated Canvas app. For a Workspace account, ask your administrator whether public links and external Drive sharing are permitted before sharing any Canvas.
When receiving a Canvas app link
Assume the creator can see your inputs and that other people with the public link may be able to view or edit saved data. Test with fictional content first. If the app requests information you would not want a human reviewer or the creator to see, do not submit it.
Common privacy surprises and fixes
- “I never shared it, but it is still there.” Auto-save places Canvas changes in AI Mode history when history is enabled. Open the history menu and delete the thread.
- “I turned off Keep Activity, so all retention stopped.” Keep Activity limits future improvement review, not every form of retention. Google may retain information for responses, safety and feedback.
- “The app creator cannot see my form entries.” Google explicitly says the creator can see data you share and can store it elsewhere. Stop submitting confidential information and ask the creator about deletion.
- “The link was sent privately, so only one person can edit.” A public link can let anyone who obtains it view and edit saved app data. Revoke or delete the shared link where the product provides that control.
- “Workspace sharing is the same as personal sharing.” Workspace administrators can disable public links, and Drive policies can block external recipients even when a Share control appears.
Bottom line
For consumer AI Mode, treat Canvas as a saved account record until you delete it, and treat Share as an intentional disclosure. For user-generated Canvas apps, trust the creator only after checking how submitted data is stored and whether it can be deleted. Gemini’s activity, auto-delete, Keep Activity and temporary-chat controls reduce some uses and retention, but Google still describes limited retention for responding, safety and feedback. Workspace users must also follow administrator and Drive-sharing rules, with public links off by default.
