Google Canvas is a workspace inside AI Mode, not a separate app or hardware feature. In a supported session, open google.com/ai (or choose AI Mode in Google Search), then open the plus/tool menu in the “Ask anything” bar and select Canvas. If Canvas is missing, the usual causes are U.S.-English availability limits, an unsupported account, Labs or age eligibility, Incognito mode, language, or a browser surface that has not received the relevant rollout.
Work through the checks below in order. They separate Canvas-specific availability from the broader AI Mode rollout, which is why you can sometimes see AI Mode but not Canvas.
What Google AI Mode Canvas is—and where the button should appear
Google describes Canvas as an AI-powered collaboration workspace in AI Mode. It is designed for longer-running tasks such as plans, projects, trip itineraries, party plans, fitness schedules, websites, cover letters, study guides, and quizzes. A Canvas thread can be edited, shared, compared with alternatives, continued with follow-up questions, and restored from its auto-saved history.
Canvas is not normally a button on the standard Google homepage. The documented path is:

- Open
google.com/ai, or open Google Search and choose AI Mode. - Click or tap the plus/tool menu in the “Ask anything” bar.
- Choose Canvas.
- Enter a prompt for a plan, writing project, coding task, quiz, study guide, or similar activity.
When the feature is available to that session, the Canvas thread opens on the right side of the AI Mode interface. A missing Canvas entry is therefore an access or surface problem first; it is not evidence that your computer needs a special component.
Canvas availability is narrower than AI Mode availability
Google’s Canvas Help information currently specifies English and the United States, on both desktop and mobile. General AI Mode has a broader country and language rollout. Seeing AI Mode in your country does not establish that Canvas has been enabled there.
Google announced on March 4, 2026 that Canvas in AI Mode was available to everyone in the U.S. in English. That is the clearest Canvas-specific rollout statement. By contrast, Google said on October 7, 2025 that general AI Mode had expanded to more than 200 countries and territories. The broader figure applies to AI Mode generally, not automatically to Canvas.

Fix Canvas missing from the plus menu: the correct order
1. Confirm that you are testing the Canvas path, not ordinary Search
Go directly to google.com/ai in a normal browser window. If you start on the Google homepage, choose AI Mode before looking for Canvas. The Canvas control belongs to the plus/tool menu inside the AI Mode prompt bar; it may not appear as a standalone homepage shortcut.

2. Check country and language before changing anything else
Canvas Help currently limits the documented service to users in the United States and in English. If you are outside the U.S., the missing control can be an ordinary availability boundary rather than a fault with your browser. The same applies if your Google Search interface is using a language that is not part of the Canvas rollout.
For a clean test, use an English Google Search interface and compare results from a U.S.-based account or device only when you are legitimately entitled to use that account and service. Do not treat a VPN or location spoofing as a supported fix: it cannot create account eligibility, and it can make sign-in and security checks less reliable.
3. Use a personal Google Account
Sign in with a personal Google Account. Google’s Search Labs instructions exclude Google Workspace and Workspace for Education accounts from Labs experiments. Organizations can also apply administrator policies that change which Search features are exposed.

4. Verify age and Search Labs status
The Search Labs AI Mode experiment lists an 18+ requirement. If your account is under 18, has an age setting that cannot be verified, or is not eligible for the experiment, the Labs version of AI Mode and its tools may not appear.
If you are using the Labs route, open Google Search Labs while signed in and check that the AI Mode experiment is enabled. A Labs toggle is not the same thing as a universal Canvas switch: Google’s public documentation does not describe a manual account-level button that forces Canvas on. The standard AI Mode Help pages describe a broader product surface, so first identify whether you are troubleshooting Labs or the general product.
5. Sign in and turn Incognito off
Google’s setup guidance says to be signed in and to keep Incognito mode turned off. Incognito sessions can lack the account, experiment, and saved-state information required for AI Mode tools.

- Close the Incognito window.
- Open a regular browser window.
- Sign in to the intended personal Google Account.
- Navigate directly to
google.com/ai. - Open the plus/tool menu again.
If Canvas appears after this change, the cause was session state rather than a missing installation.

6. Open the menu in the right place
In AI Mode, locate the “Ask anything” bar and open its plus/tool menu. Canvas is nested there. Do not rely on a button in the regular Google Search box, a browser new-tab page, or a bookmark created for an older interface. Google can change surrounding navigation while keeping the tool in the AI Mode composer.
7. Test another supported surface
Google lists Google Search, google.com/ai, and the Google app as AI Mode entry points. If Canvas is absent in Chrome, test the direct AI Mode page in another current browser or in the Google app, using the same personal account and language. This comparison helps isolate a browser-surface rollout from an account or region restriction.

8. Treat a persistent absence as rollout or account exposure
If the direct page works, you are signed in with a personal account, Incognito is off, the language is English, and the plus menu still lacks Canvas, the most defensible explanation is account-level rollout, experiment exposure, or a temporary service or interface change. Google’s public documentation does not provide an account diagnostic or a manual enablement switch.
Use the feedback option inside AI Mode if it is available. Include your country, language, device, browser, account type, and the exact path you used. Those details let support distinguish a documented availability limit from a broken control.

Why Chrome can show a different Canvas experience
Google’s April 16, 2026 Chrome announcement described an AI Mode experience that can open pages beside Search, search across recent tabs, and expose tools such as Canvas from the plus menu. Google said those updates were available in the U.S. at publication and would expand to more places.
This means Chrome is not simply a neutral window onto every AI Mode feature. The Chrome AI Mode surface itself has a geography and account rollout. Canvas can therefore be present in google.com/ai but absent from a Chrome-integrated surface, or the reverse, while Google continues expanding the feature.
What to do when AI Mode works but Canvas does not

- Different rollout scopes: General AI Mode covers more countries and languages than Canvas.
- Labs versus general product: A Labs experiment can have age, account, and enrollment requirements that do not apply identically to the broader AI Mode interface.
- Workspace restrictions: A work or school account may reach AI Mode surfaces but be excluded from Search Labs experiments.
- Surface-specific rollout: Chrome, a desktop browser, and the Google app can expose different controls while updates propagate.
- Session state: Incognito mode or a signed-out session can hide account-dependent tools.
Do not infer that Canvas is broken merely because AI Mode answers are available. Compare the documented axes—surface, account type, country and language, experiment status, and device—before clearing data or reinstalling anything.
Does Canvas work outside the United States?
The currently published Canvas Help wording specifies English-language users in the United States on desktop and mobile. Google’s separate statement that AI Mode reached more than 200 countries and territories describes AI Mode generally, not Canvas specifically. Therefore, outside the U.S., the responsible answer is that Canvas availability is not established by the general AI Mode rollout.
If you are outside the U.S., check the plus menu after signing in normally and using an English interface, but expect the control to be absent until Google documents or delivers Canvas in your market. A missing button in that situation is consistent with regional rollout rather than a local browser defect.
Do you need special hardware or a repair tool?
No. Canvas is a software workspace inside Google Search AI Mode. A newer monitor, browser accessory, computer-repair utility, or printed manual cannot unlock an account-level, language, region, or rollout restriction. Concentrate troubleshooting on eligibility, sign-in state, browser surface, and the AI Mode menu.
