Google says Chrome for Android is adding an APK check that looks for known malware while an app package is downloading and can stop the download before it completes. The check requires Safe Browsing to be turned on. Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement does not give a release date, supported versions, eligible devices, or regional availability, so it does not establish when the feature will reach a particular phone.
Does Chrome scan APK files for malware?
Google announced an additional protection at the download stage for Chrome on Android. When a user tries to download an APK with Safe Browsing enabled, Google says Chrome will evaluate the package for known malware and stop the download if needed. The announcement describes this as an added layer of protection, not a guarantee that every APK passing the check is harmless.
Google’s May 12, 2026 Android security announcement put it this way: “For Chrome on Android, we’re improving app safety by adding another layer of protection at download time. If you have Safe Browsing turned on and want to download an app, we’ll evaluate the APK for known malware and stop you before you download it.”
Do I need Safe Browsing turned on?
Yes. Google’s announcement makes enabled Safe Browsing the stated condition for the APK check. It does not say whether Standard Protection, Enhanced Protection, or either setting is sufficient.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
To review the setting in Chrome for Android, open Settings → Privacy and security → Safe Browsing. Google describes Standard Protection as checking sites, extensions, and attempted downloads against its unsafe lists. Enhanced Protection includes Standard features and sends additional information in real time—including visited URLs and a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information—to provide additional protections. These are descriptions of Safe Browsing generally; Google has not specified which level powers the new APK check.
How does Chrome’s check differ from Google Play Protect?
They are protections at different points in the process. Chrome’s announced check applies as an APK is being downloaded. Play Protect checks apps users attempt to install, regardless of where they came from, and can warn about known or suspicious apps. Google also says it may prompt for a real-time scan of an app it has not previously scanned.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
| Protection | When it applies | What Google says it does | Stated condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome APK check | During an APK download in Chrome for Android | Evaluates the APK for known malware and can stop the download before it completes | Safe Browsing must be turned on |
| Google Play Protect | When a user attempts to install an app | Checks apps regardless of download source, warns about known or suspicious apps, and may recommend a real-time scan for a previously unseen app | Google describes it as Android’s built-in protection, enabled by default on devices with Google Play Services |
The Chrome announcement does not say the download check replaces Play Protect or duplicates all of its checks. Nor does Google publish a head-to-head detection comparison or a detection rate for the new Chrome feature.
What should you do before downloading an APK?
Google’s Android guidance already describes Chrome warnings for APK downloads and notes that Android requires users to opt in before installing apps from unknown sources. Treat a warning as a reason to pause rather than trying to bypass it automatically.

When will the feature reach Android phones?
Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement gives no rollout timetable, supported Chrome or Android versions, device eligibility, or regional availability. It therefore does not confirm that the feature is already generally available or that a particular phone will receive it. The announcement also does not say that APK contents are uploaded to Google for this specific check; separate descriptions of Enhanced Protection or optional suspicious-file scans should not be treated as details of this feature.

Google reports large-scale Play Protect activity, but those figures are about Play Protect—not the newly announced Chrome APK check. In its 2024 ecosystem-safety reporting, Google said Play Protect scanned more than 200 billion apps daily and identified more than 13 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play through real-time scanning. In reporting for 2025, Google said it scanned over 350 billion Android apps daily and identified more than 27 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play through real-time scanning. These are Google-reported figures, not independently audited measures of Chrome’s APK feature.
