GoDaddy and WP Engine both provide managed WordPress hosting, but they package capacity, backups, staging, support, and pricing differently. GoDaddy can be attractive when a regional first-year promotion and a straightforward plan are your priorities. WP Engine is better suited to owners who want clearly documented WordPress operations, daily and on-demand backups, one-click staging, published traffic estimates, and a more explicit support ladder. Neither is the universal winner: your site count, expected traffic, billing term, country, and need for developer tools should decide the purchase.

The prices below come from different official pages and currencies, so they are context rather than a like-for-like quote. Confirm checkout pricing, renewal rates, taxes, limits, and service-level eligibility for your market before committing.

What is the practical difference between GoDaddy and WP Engine?

Both companies sell managed WordPress hosting, which means the provider handles at least some WordPress core maintenance and hosting operations instead of giving you an unmanaged server. The exact services depend on the tier. GoDaddy’s current Managed Hosting for WordPress page lists automatic WordPress core updates on its plans, with backup, staging, security, and developer features varying by tier. WP Engine describes its platform as managed WordPress, PHP, and MySQL hosting with backups and staging built into the service.

The important distinction is how much each company publishes about those services. GoDaddy’s plan grid emphasizes a low introductory price, site count, storage, and feature checkmarks. WP Engine publishes estimated traffic ranges, storage and bandwidth allowances, backup retention, support channels, and the conditions attached to its uptime SLA. That makes WP Engine easier to evaluate for a high-traffic or development-heavy project, while GoDaddy may be simpler for a small site that fits a clearly listed tier.

Which host is cheaper?

There is no honest single-number answer because the opened pages use different currencies, markets, promotional periods, and billing displays. GoDaddy’s page shows euro-denominated first-year offers; WP Engine’s US page shows an annual price for its Essential plan. Compare the same country, billing term, taxes, introductory period, and renewal price at checkout.

GoDaddy displayed first-year offers

Plan Displayed first-year monthly price Reference price shown on the page Websites NVMe storage
Basic €2.79/month €13.99/month 1, with additional sites addable 10 GB
Deluxe €9.99/month €17.99/month 1, with additional sites addable 20 GB
Ultimate €12.99/month €24.99/month 3, with additional sites addable 30 GB

These are the euro prices displayed on GoDaddy’s official plan page and are labeled as first-year terms, not universal prices for every country or renewal period. See the current GoDaddy Managed WordPress plans for the market-specific checkout.

WP Engine displayed US pricing

Plan Published price context Estimated monthly visits Storage Bandwidth
Essential $28/month billed annually; $336 payable today on the US page 25,000–400,000 10–50 GB 75 GB
Business Higher-touch plan; the page directs buyers to “Get in touch” 400,000–800,000 50 GB–2 TB 550 GB
Enterprise Custom pricing 800,000+ 2 TB+ 550 GB+

WP Engine labels the visit figures as estimates rather than guaranteed quotas. Dynamic sites and sudden traffic spikes should be discussed with the provider before purchase. The WP Engine plans and pricing page is the authoritative place to check current US pricing and plan terms.

How to make the price comparison fair

  1. Select the same country and currency on both sites.
  2. Compare the same commitment, such as monthly versus annual billing.
  3. Record the introductory term and the renewal price separately.
  4. Add taxes, domain costs, premium add-ons, extra sites, and overage charges where applicable.
  5. Check whether your traffic pattern is compatible with the published visit estimate or requires a custom discussion.

A low first-year figure can be useful for a new, small site, but it should not outweigh a materially higher renewal price or a missing operational feature you will need every week.

How many sites and how much capacity do you get?

GoDaddy publishes a simple site-and-storage progression: Basic and Deluxe include one website, while Ultimate includes three; each plan allows additional sites to be added. The opened page lists 10 GB, 20 GB, and 30 GB of NVMe storage respectively. It does not present the same tier-by-tier traffic and bandwidth estimates shown by WP Engine.

WP Engine’s capacity model is more traffic-oriented. Essential is described with an estimated 25,000–400,000 monthly visits, 10–50 GB of storage, and 75 GB of bandwidth. Business is listed at 400,000–800,000 visits, 50 GB–2 TB of storage, and 550 GB of bandwidth. Enterprise is listed at 800,000-plus visits, 2 TB-plus of storage, and 550 GB-plus of bandwidth. Those are planning estimates, not a promise that every site will perform identically at the top of the range.

Choose by site count

  • One small site: GoDaddy Basic or Deluxe may cover the published site and storage requirements; compare the backup and staging differences before choosing Basic.
  • Several related sites: GoDaddy Ultimate starts with three sites. WP Engine’s appropriate site allowance and price should be confirmed for your account because the public comparison emphasizes capacity tiers rather than a simple three-plan site count.
  • Many client or brand sites: Ask both providers how additional sites are billed, isolated, backed up, and supported. Do not infer those details from the headline plan price.

Choose by traffic pattern

For a mostly static brochure site, storage and ordinary page delivery may be the main constraints. For an ecommerce, membership, publishing, or application-like WordPress site, traffic bursts, uncached requests, database load, and bandwidth matter more. WP Engine explicitly tells users with dynamic sites or spikes to contact the provider; follow that guidance rather than selecting a tier from a visit number alone.

Which provider has better backups and restore options?

Backup frequency is one of the clearest differences in the published plans. GoDaddy lists weekly backups on Basic and daily backups on Deluxe and Ultimate. WP Engine lists daily automated backups plus on-demand backups across its platform, and says backup contents are retained for no less than 30 days and no longer than 60 days.

Backup question GoDaddy WP Engine
Automatic backup frequency Weekly on Basic; daily on Deluxe and Ultimate Daily automated backups
On-demand backups Not identified on the reviewed plan grid Listed as a platform feature
Published retention Not identified on the reviewed plan grid At least 30 days and no more than 60 days

“Daily” does not mean every change is instantly recoverable. Before launch, verify the restore interface, whether the database and uploaded files are captured together, how staging restores work, and whether a downloadable copy is available. If you choose GoDaddy Basic, decide whether weekly recovery points are acceptable for the amount of content your site publishes.

Do both hosts include staging and automatic WordPress updates?

GoDaddy lists staging on Deluxe and Ultimate, not on Basic in the opened comparison. It lists automatic WordPress core updates across its Managed Hosting for WordPress plans. WP Engine lists one-click staging and development environments as platform features, alongside managed WordPress, PHP, and MySQL.

When staging matters

Staging creates a separate copy where you can test a core update, plugin change, theme revision, or PHP-related adjustment before touching production. It is particularly valuable for stores, membership sites, and sites maintained by more than one person. If you need staging but are considering GoDaddy, Deluxe is the lowest of the displayed tiers that lists it; confirm the current checkout because feature grids can change.

Automatic updates still need a change process

Automatic core updates reduce routine maintenance, but they do not replace compatibility testing. Keep a recent backup, test major plugin and theme changes in staging, and monitor forms, checkout, cron jobs, and integrations after updates. The providers’ automatic-management claims do not guarantee that every third-party extension will remain compatible.

Which host offers stronger performance and security features?

Both companies advertise layered performance and security tools, but the claims are provider descriptions rather than independent speed tests. GoDaddy lists a site optimizer on its plans. Its Deluxe and Ultimate listings add CDN performance claims, automated malware scans and removal, and enhanced DDoS protection; Ultimate also lists Object Cache Pro and application performance monitoring.

WP Engine lists EverCache, a global Cloudflare-powered CDN, security patching, plugin risk scans, and Layer 3 and 4 DDoS protection. Advanced DDoS protection and a managed web application firewall appear as optional add-ons in its comparison. If your site processes logins, payments, or user-generated content, ask which protections are included in your exact tier and which require an add-on.

Uptime language is not interchangeable

GoDaddy states a 99.9% uptime guarantee on its managed WordPress plans. WP Engine lists a 99.99% uptime SLA for plans with isolated resources. That WP Engine figure should not be applied automatically to every WP Engine tier, and an SLA is a contractual remedy framework rather than a prediction of your site’s real-world speed or availability. Read the contract’s exclusions, measurement method, and credit process.

How do support and migration compare?

WP Engine publishes a more detailed support ladder. Essential includes 24/7 chat. Business includes chat and phone support. Enterprise adds dedicated account support and priority support. Its support information also describes tiered assistance and migration help for eligible plans; higher tiers may include advisory services and hands-on help around traffic peaks. These are provider descriptions, so do not assume a particular response or resolution time unless your contract states it.

GoDaddy’s general hosting information advertises phone and chat support, but the reviewed WordPress plan grid does not provide an equivalent plan-by-plan support matrix. An older GoDaddy overview discusses automated migration and developer access, yet those details should be confirmed in the current checkout and documentation before you rely on them for a project.

Questions to ask before migrating

  • Is migration assistance included with the exact plan, or is it a separate service?
  • Who handles DNS changes, redirects, SSL configuration, and email-related records?
  • Can the provider migrate a dynamic store or membership database without taking the site offline?
  • What support channel is available during your launch window?
  • How are staging, backups, and rollback handled if the migration exposes a plugin or PHP problem?

Prepare a complete backup and a low-traffic maintenance window even when a provider offers migration assistance. Keep the old host active until you have tested login, forms, payments, media, redirects, analytics, and transactional email on the new server.

Is GoDaddy or WP Engine better for WordPress?

The better choice depends on which constraint is most important to you, not on a universal speed or reliability verdict.

GoDaddy may fit when you need

  • A displayed first-year promotion in your region and you have checked the renewal price.
  • A small site that fits 10–30 GB of listed NVMe storage.
  • One site on Basic or Deluxe, or three sites on Ultimate, with additional sites available as an add-on.
  • Daily backups and staging without moving to a custom enterprise conversation, provided you select a tier that lists those features.
  • A site optimizer, CDN-related features, malware scanning and removal, or enhanced DDoS protection at the tiers where they are shown.

WP Engine may fit when you need

  • WordPress-focused management with explicit PHP and MySQL platform coverage.
  • Daily automated and on-demand backups with a published 30-to-60-day retention range.
  • One-click staging and development environments as standard platform capabilities.
  • Published traffic, storage, and bandwidth estimates for planning a growing or high-volume site.
  • A documented support progression from 24/7 chat to phone, dedicated account support, and priority support at higher tiers.

These are inferences from the listed offerings, not independent performance tests. A site can be well served by either provider when its plan, workload, and operational practices match the service.

What should you verify before buying?

  1. Market and currency: Open the country-specific checkout and record the currency, tax treatment, first-year term, and renewal amount.
  2. Site inventory: Count production, staging, and planned sites. Confirm the charge for every additional site.
  3. Workload: Estimate monthly visits, peak events, logged-in traffic, media storage, and bandwidth. Dynamic traffic should be discussed directly with WP Engine or the equivalent GoDaddy sales channel.
  4. Recovery: Confirm backup frequency, retention, restore steps, downloadable backups, and whether restores include files and database together.
  5. Development: Check staging availability, one-click or manual workflows, PHP-version controls, SSH or developer access, and deployment limits.
  6. Security: Identify included malware scanning, removal, DDoS protection, CDN, WAF, and any paid security add-ons.
  7. Support: Confirm the exact chat, phone, migration, account-management, and escalation options attached to your tier.
  8. SLA: Read the uptime guarantee or SLA eligibility, exclusions, measurement rules, and remedy before treating the percentage as a promise.

What is the bottom-line decision?

Start with GoDaddy if the regional first-year price and a clearly listed tier meet your site-count, backup, staging, and storage needs after you confirm renewal terms. Start with WP Engine if you place greater value on explicit WordPress operations, daily and on-demand recovery, one-click development environments, documented capacity estimates, and tiered support, and you can justify annual billing and potentially higher plan costs. Whichever you choose, make the final decision from the current checkout and contract—not from a headline price or an uptime percentage alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change from GoDaddy to WP Engine later without rebuilding WordPress?

Usually, a WordPress migration can move the files, database, uploads, and configuration rather than requiring a new site. The practical work is validating DNS, SSL, redirects, cron jobs, email records, caching, and any integrations after the copy; keep the original host available until those checks pass.

Does a CDN replace WordPress caching and optimization?

No. A CDN serves eligible assets from edge locations, while page caching, object caching, image optimization, database tuning, and plugin behavior affect the work done at the origin server. Ask which cache layers are included and how logged-in or personalized pages are handled.

Should an online store choose the plan with the highest visitor estimate?

Not automatically. Store traffic includes uncached cart, checkout, account, and administrative requests that may behave differently from anonymous page views. Share your dynamic-request volume, promotions calendar, payment integrations, and product catalog with the host before selecting a tier.

What happens to my backups if I cancel hosting?

Retention and export rules are contract-specific. Download a complete, restorable copy of the database and files before cancellation, confirm how long the provider keeps snapshots after termination, and document DNS and email settings so another host can take over.
