God of War Ragnarök is easiest to learn as a series of small decisions: read the attack ring, answer it with the correct defense, switch between frost and fire, and keep one practical set of equipment upgraded. On a first playthrough on PS4, PS5, or PC, you do not need a perfect build or a memorized combo list. Practice the signals, spend materials at the shops, use Favors for more resources, and invest XP in moves you actually use.
This spoiler-light guide covers the base game only. It uses the default PlayStation control layout where relevant; PC players can remap keyboard and mouse controls or use a gamepad.
What should I do in my first few encounters?
Use the opening fights as a short tutorial rather than trying to clear every enemy with one weapon. The official combat refresher course treats recognizing attack indicators as the foundation of combat.
- Watch the colored ring around an incoming attack and respond to that color instead of holding block by habit.
- Use light attacks to learn timing, then add a heavy attack when an opening is safe.
- Switch between the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos when an enemy, its defenses, or the arena favors a different element.
- Try a quick bare-fist sequence to build stun, and use Atreus’s arrows, a Runic Attack, or a nearby hazard when several enemies crowd you.
- After the fight, spend available XP on a move you expect to use and visit Brok or Sindri when you have useful materials and Hacksilver.
On the default console layout, R1 is a light attack, R2 is a heavy attack, L2 aims, L1 blocks, a single press of X side-steps, and a double press of X rolls. Hold L1 and press R1 or R2 to activate an equipped light or heavy Runic Attack. These are default PlayStation inputs, not universal PC key bindings.

What do the yellow, red, and blue rings mean?
The ring is a decision prompt. Treating every attack as a normal block is the quickest way to lose control of a fight.

PlayStation describes parrying as crucial because it turns a precisely timed defense into an opening. A roll creates more distance than a side-step, but its travel can carry Kratos into another enemy, so roll toward a clear lane rather than reflexively rolling in place.
How do I parry yellow attacks reliably?
Keep your attention on the ring, not on the enemy’s most dramatic animation. Release a held block and tap L1 as the yellow-ring strike is about to connect; tapping too early or too late produces a normal guard or a hit instead of a parry.

Practice one attacker at a time in a safe encounter. Once the timing is familiar, use the brief opening after a successful parry for a light attack, a stun-building punch, or a weapon switch. Do not parry red-ring attacks: their color is the warning that this response is unavailable.
When should I use the axe, blades, fists, and ranged attacks?
Weapon choice is situational rather than a permanent ranking. The axe applies frost and the blades apply fire; some enemies resist or favor particular elemental approaches, so changing tools can be more effective than forcing one combo.

Leviathan Axe
Use the axe when frost is useful or when a measured attack and a thrown weapon fit the space. Its ranged option lets you pressure an enemy without standing in the center of a group.
Blades of Chaos
The blades apply fire and can reach enemies at a distance with their chains. Their broad attacks are useful when opponents surround Kratos, but choose quick attacks when a slow heavy animation would leave you exposed.

Bare fists build stun quickly. A stunned enemy gives you a safer damage window, making punches a deliberate tool rather than a fallback for when both weapons are unavailable.
Atreus, Runic, and the environment
Atreus’s arrows add ranged pressure and can help interrupt or soften targets. Runic Attacks provide burst damage or crowd control, while explosive objects, ledges, and other arena hazards can change the shape of an encounter. Look around before committing to a long animation.
Spartan Rage
Spartan Rage can restore health when blows connect and push back a crowd. Its meter takes time to refill, so save it for a dangerous group, a recovery window, or an opportunity to stop several attacks at once instead of spending it automatically at the first opening.

How should I choose and upgrade armor?
Compare the gear in front of you by current Power Level, useful perks, and whether its stats support the way you play. There is no evidence-based rule that the starting armor must be discarded immediately.
- Explore slightly beyond the critical path and complete Favors when you want more equipment, materials, or progression.
- Bring materials and Hacksilver to Brok and Sindri’s shops to improve armor, axe pommels, blade handles, and shield components.
- Compare a replacement’s Power Level and perk with the item you already understand before spending scarce materials.
- When two armor pieces contribute to a paired perk, matching wrist and waist pieces can make that bonus stronger; mixing pieces is still sensible when a single item offers a better stat or effect.
Santa Monica Studio states that equipment with a Power Level can be upgraded as high as level 9. Level-9 appearance changes apply to Kratos’s core weapons and armor, so an early item is not automatically obsolete simply because it was obtained near the beginning. Earlier crafting resources also become available for purchase in shops later, reducing the need to treat every early material as permanently irreplaceable.
How do Skill Labors work, and where should XP go?
Combat XP has two jobs: buying skills and improving selected abilities. A universally correct first skill does not exist; favor a move whose input, range, or timing solves a problem you are actually encountering.
Buy a skill, then use it
After purchasing an eligible skill, use that skill in real fights to advance its Skill Labor. Reaching Gold Tier opens a Skill Mod Slot for that skill, letting you tailor its effect. The counter applies to eligible skills, not every skill in the tree, so check the skill’s entry before planning around a mod.
Upgrade special abilities
The Weapons menu also lets XP buy two additional levels for each eligible Runic Attack, Spartan Rage mode, and Relic. A modest upgrade to a Runic Attack you regularly land can be more valuable than spreading XP across abilities you rarely activate.

A practical spending loop
- Buy one immediately useful attack or improvement.
- Use it until its Skill Labor advances, rather than changing your routine every fight.
- Put additional XP into a favored Runic Attack, Rage mode, or Relic when its next level supports your preferred encounters.
How do Amulet enchantments and realm sets work?
Enchantments go into the Amulet of Yggdrasil rather than directly into individual armor pieces. Jewels of Yggdrasil expand the amulet’s available slots; some are earned through the story and others through exploration.
Three or more enchantments from one realm set activate that set’s attunement perk, while each individual realm enchantment still contributes its own stats. This creates a choice between concentrating on one set bonus and mixing effects that solve different problems. Recheck the amulet after finding a Jewel or a new enchantment instead of assuming the newest item belongs on armor.
Which exploration activities are worth doing?
Exploration is part of progression, not a detour you must finish before advancing. Favors provide loot and additional progression, and the developer says quests do not expire, so you can return later without losing them.
Favors and side paths
Take a side path when you have time to open a chest, solve a puzzle, or gather a material. If a reward is currently too difficult to reach, continue the story and return with a new ability rather than forcing a low-level fight.

Collecting Odin’s Ravens unlocks rewards at collection thresholds. You do not need to stop the story to find every raven, but checking the tree after several discoveries can provide useful equipment or resources.

Yes. The US base game offers Give Me Story and Give Me Grace for less pressure, Give Me Balance as the normal setting, and harder options including Give Me God Of War. Choose the level that lets you learn the combat signals without turning every encounter into a chore.
Give Me God Of War has a special restriction: it must be selected at the start, and once you lower the difficulty you cannot select it again for that playthrough. This base-game rule is separate from the difficulty tuning in Valhalla, the free epilogue. Valhalla uses its own attempt-based progression and should not be used to judge ordinary first-playthrough armor or skill choices; the developer recommends finishing the base story before entering it to avoid spoilers.

The combat systems and progression described here apply across the base-game versions. PlayStation’s default control explanations use a gamepad, while the PC edition supports customized mouse-and-keyboard bindings and gamepads.
- On PS4 and PS5, begin with the default layout, then adjust sensitivity or bindings only when a control consistently gets in your way.
- On PC, map frequently used actions such as block, dodge, weapon switch, and Runic Attacks where your fingers can reach them without releasing movement.
- A DualSense controller works on PC, but PlayStation lists a wired connection for the full set of controller features.
- PlayStation lists 190 GB of SSD storage for the PC version, so check available space before installation.
What beginner mistakes should I avoid?
- Holding block against yellow rings: tap L1 to parry instead.
- Trying to block red rings: evade and find a safe angle.
- Ignoring double-blue attacks: double-tap L1 for Shield Strike.
- Rolling every time: a side-step preserves position and avoids rolling into another enemy.
- Using one weapon for every target: test frost, fire, ranged attacks, and stun.
- Replacing gear by appearance alone: compare Power Level, perks, and paired armor bonuses.
- Saving all XP: buy a practical skill, practice its eligible Skill Labor, and improve a special ability you actually use.
- Skipping the shops: materials and Hacksilver have no value until you spend them on useful upgrades.
- Treating side content as missable: Favors remain available, so return when your abilities make a route safer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS4 disc on a PS5?
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive; the digital PS5 upgrade is sold separately. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the PS4 disc. Check the official game FAQ for the edition and upgrade conditions.
Does the PC version require a controller?
No. The PC release supports remappable mouse-and-keyboard controls as well as gamepads. If you use a DualSense controller, PlayStation says the full controller feature set requires a wired connection.
What does L3 Auto-Equip prioritize?
On the Weapons or Armor tab, L3 Auto-Equip selects the highest-Power item first. If items tie, it uses the stat you selected to break the tie, which is useful for a quick baseline but does not understand your preferred perk combination.
Are Valhalla armor rewards part of the main story’s build system?
No. Valhalla is a separate free epilogue with its own progression, and its armor rewards are appearance-only. Build decisions for the base game should be made from base-game equipment and upgrades.
