The GMKtec EVO-X3 is worth its roughly $3,800 US price only if you need workstation-class compute, 128GB of shared memory for local AI or large creative projects, and the option to attach a desktop graphics card through OCuLink. Its Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform is exceptionally fast for a compact pre-built system, while the Radeon 8060S handles Full HD and some adjusted-detail WQHD gaming. The trade-offs are substantial: memory is soldered, the front panel lacks USB-C, there is only one USB-C port overall, and OCuLink requires a shutdown before connection changes. For office work or ordinary gaming, the premium is difficult to justify; for a compact AI and media workstation, the EVO-X3 is unusually capable.
What is the GMKtec EVO-X3, and who is it for?
The EVO-X3 is a tall metal mini PC built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395. It combines a 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 processor, integrated Radeon 8060S graphics, an XDNA 2 neural-processing unit and 128GB of fast shared memory in a compact chassis. The design targets people who need more compute and memory than a typical mini PC provides but do not want a conventional desktop tower.
Its best matches are local-AI developers, video editors, photographers working with large catalogs, engineers running parallel workloads and professionals who want a small workstation that can later use a desktop GPU. The same specifications are excessive for web browsing, documents and casual gaming, especially because the memory cannot be replaced or expanded.

PCWorld described the system as exceptionally fast for a compact pre-built and reported stable cooling without significant throttling. That matters more than a short burst score for exports, code builds and long AI runs. Your result will still vary with ambient temperature, firmware, application version and the selected power profile.
What do Silent, Balanced and Performance modes change?
The EVO-X3 provides Silent, Balanced and Performance modes. Performance mode permits short power peaks of up to 140W, which can improve burst and sustained throughput when the cooling system has enough thermal headroom. Silent mode favors lower noise, while Balanced is the sensible default for mixed work. The modes change acoustic and power behavior, so a benchmark run in one profile should not be compared directly with a run in another.
Is the EVO-X3 good for local AI?
Its defining advantage for local AI is the 128GB shared LPDDR5X-8000 pool. CPU and integrated GPU can draw from the same memory, giving large language models and other memory-heavy workloads considerably more room than mainstream mini PCs with 16GB or 32GB. Reviews describe the EVO-X3 as suitable for running large language models locally and handling large media projects.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The 50-TOPS XDNA 2 NPU can accelerate software that specifically supports AMD’s AI engine, while the 16-core CPU and Radeon GPU handle workloads that do not use the NPU. Actual speed depends on model quantization, context size, framework support and whether an application uses the NPU, GPU or CPU. A large memory number does not automatically make every model fast; it mainly prevents memory capacity from being the first limitation.
What is the catch with the 128GB memory?
The LPDDR5X is soldered to the motherboard. There are no memory slots, and you cannot replace a 128GB configuration with a larger module later. Choose the capacity at purchase based on the largest models and projects you expect to run during the machine’s useful life. Adding an SSD increases storage only; it does not increase the memory available to the operating system, CPU or integrated GPU.
How capable is the Radeon 8060S for gaming and creative work?
The Radeon 8060S is an unusually powerful integrated GPU, with 40 compute units and access to the system’s shared 128GB memory. It is capable of Full HD gaming and can handle some WQHD games when you reduce detail settings. The EVO-X3 is not a sensible mainstream gaming value at nearly $3,800, because a conventional desktop with a discrete graphics card can deliver more gaming performance per dollar.

For creative applications, TechRadar reported that Premiere Pro, Lightroom and Photoshop ran smoothly in its test setup. That observation indicates a strong fit for editing timelines, photo catalogs and GPU-assisted effects, but application versions, codecs, plug-ins and project complexity will change the result. The integrated GPU also benefits from the large shared memory pool, yet it cannot provide the same dedicated bandwidth and predictable VRAM behavior as a high-end discrete card.
Cold boot to a ready Windows desktop took about 18 seconds in TechRadar’s setup. Treat that as a reviewer observation rather than a universal promise; startup services, updates and the installed SSD can alter boot time.
Can you add an external GPU through OCuLink?
Yes. The rear OCuLink connector is a direct PCIe 4.0 x4 link for an external desktop GPU. Because it avoids some of the protocol overhead of USB4, it is the preferred expansion path when you want desktop-class graphics from a compact base system. The enclosure, power supply, graphics card and cable are separate purchases; none is implied to be included with the EVO-X3.
OCuLink is not hot-pluggable. Shut down the EVO-X3 and power down the eGPU enclosure before connecting or disconnecting the cable. Treating it like a USB peripheral can cause an unstable link, an undetected card or data loss.
- Install the desktop graphics card in an OCuLink eGPU enclosure with an adequate power supply.
- Install the enclosure’s driver requirements and the current graphics driver while the EVO-X3 is running without the eGPU.
- Shut down Windows completely; do not use sleep or hibernation.
- Turn off the eGPU enclosure, connect its OCuLink cable to the EVO-X3’s rear port, then power the enclosure.
- Start the EVO-X3 and verify the card in Device Manager or the graphics application you use.
- Before disconnecting, shut down the PC and switch off the enclosure. Reconnect the cable only after both devices are off.
This arrangement is useful if you want a quiet, small system for travel or everyday work and a desktop GPU for occasional rendering or heavier games. It adds cost, another box on the desk and a shutdown requirement, so it is not a free performance upgrade.
Can you upgrade the EVO-X3’s RAM or SSD?
RAM cannot be upgraded. Storage is the practical internal upgrade: the chassis has two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. The reviewed 2TB and 4TB configurations occupy one slot, leaving the other available for a second NVMe drive.

| Upgrade | Supported path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| System memory | None; 128GB LPDDR5X is soldered | Capacity is fixed at purchase |
| Primary SSD | Replace the installed M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 drive | Back up and migrate or reinstall the operating system |
| Second SSD | Add an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe drive in the free slot | Confirm physical clearance and initialize the drive in Windows |
| External storage | Use USB-A, USB4 or a network connection | External bandwidth depends on the port and enclosure |
How should you add a second NVMe drive?
- Shut down Windows, unplug the DC input and hold the power button briefly to discharge residual power.
- Open the chassis according to GMKtec’s service instructions and identify the unoccupied M.2 2280 slot.
- Insert a compatible PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD at an angle, press it flat and secure it with the retaining screw.
- Close the chassis before reconnecting power.
- In Windows, open Disk Management, initialize the new drive using the required partition style, create a volume and format it.
- Keep project files on the new volume while maintaining a separate backup; a second internal drive is not a backup by itself.
Drive capacity and pricing vary by model and promotion. The available evidence establishes the 2TB and 4TB configurations and the free second slot, but not a universal price for each configuration.
Does the EVO-X3 have enough ports for a workstation desk?
It has the high-speed connections a basic workstation needs, but the layout is sparse. There is only one USB-C port, it is on the rear, and the front panel has no USB-C or card reader. A USB4 dock or hub is a realistic addition for cameras, card readers, external drives and several USB peripherals.
| Location | Port | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Front | USB-A, 5Gbps | Fast external drive, keyboard or other accessory |
| Front | USB-A, 2.0 | Keyboard, mouse or low-bandwidth device |
| Front | 3.5mm combo audio | Headset or combined microphone/headphone connection |
| Rear | USB4-C, 40Gbps, DisplayPort functionality | High-speed storage, dock or compatible display |
| Rear | USB-A, 10Gbps | Fast peripheral or storage connection |
| Rear | HDMI 2.1 | Direct display output |
| Rear | 2.5GbE Ethernet | Wired networking and fast local file transfers |
| Rear | OCuLink PCIe 4.0 x4 | External desktop GPU |
| Rear | DC input | Power connection |
Plan the desk around the rear USB4 port if you use a dock. A dock can add connectors, but every attached device still shares the dock’s single upstream link; high-speed storage and displays can compete for that bandwidth. If your setup is only a keyboard, mouse, one monitor and Ethernet, the built-in ports may be sufficient without a dock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What networking and display options does it provide?
Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 cover current wireless networking and peripherals, provided your router and accessories support those standards. The 2.5GbE port is preferable for large project transfers, network storage and consistent latency. For displays, the rear HDMI 2.1 connector and the USB4-C port’s DisplayPort functionality give you two documented display-output paths; the exact number of simultaneously supported screens depends on the monitor and adapter arrangement.
There is no front card reader. Photographers and video teams should budget for a USB card reader connected directly or through a dock, and should check whether their preferred reader needs 10Gbps or USB4 bandwidth.
How much does the EVO-X3 cost, and is it good value?
The latest US listings retrieved for this model place it at about $3,800. PCWorld lists $3,799.99, TechRadar reports a $3,799 starting price, and GMKtec’s collection page lists the EVO-X3 at $3,799.99 in stock when accessed. Prices, promotions, tax and stock can change quickly, so verify the live listing before ordering.

| Configuration or cost item | Evidence | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| 2TB SSD configuration | Configuration is listed; separate price not stated | Use the free M.2 slot if you need more capacity |
| 4TB SSD configuration | Configuration is listed; separate price not stated | Reduces immediate storage work but does not change the 128GB memory limit |
| System price | About $3,800 US; figures above | Premium is justified mainly by memory, compute and expansion |
| USB4 dock | Accessory cost not stated | Budget separately if you need more ports or a card reader |
| OCuLink eGPU setup | Enclosure, GPU, power supply and cable are separate | Total workstation cost can rise substantially |
The price makes sense when replacing several roles: a high-memory local-AI box, a compact editing workstation and a base system that can accept a desktop GPU. It is poor value for office applications, light development or ordinary gaming, where the fixed memory and premium provide little practical benefit.
How does the EVO-X3 compare with the EVO-X2?
The EVO-X2 is the closest in-family alternative mentioned in coverage. PCWorld describes it as offering similar baseline performance for less money, while the EVO-X3 uses a larger chassis and puts more emphasis on OCuLink expansion. A complete price or specification table for the EVO-X2 is not established here, so the comparison should focus on the documented differences rather than assumed component details.
| Decision point | EVO-X3 | EVO-X2 |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline performance | Very high; Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform | Similar baseline performance according to PCWorld |
| Price position | About $3,800 US in the latest retrieved listings | Lower than EVO-X3; exact figure not stated |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you configure and set up the EVO-X3?
Decide on memory needs first, because that choice cannot be changed later. Then choose storage based on whether you prefer a larger primary drive now or a smaller drive plus a second NVMe for projects.
- Identify the largest local models, media projects and virtual machines you expect to use; select the EVO-X3 only if 128GB shared memory addresses that requirement.
- Choose the 2TB configuration when you expect to add a second SSD, or the 4TB configuration when minimizing immediate storage management matters more.
- Select Balanced mode for everyday work, Silent mode when acoustics matter most and Performance mode for demanding exports or compute runs.
- Connect a wired 2.5GbE network when moving large files or using network storage.
- Add a USB4 dock only after listing your peripherals; the single rear USB-C port is the main expansion bottleneck.
- If you need a desktop GPU, plan the enclosure, power supply, card, cable and shutdown procedure before buying the base system.
- After setup, update Windows and device drivers, initialize any added SSD in Disk Management and create a backup routine before storing irreplaceable projects.
What are the EVO-X3’s main strengths and weaknesses?
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| 16-core/32-thread Zen 5 CPU with very high compact-system performance | Nearly $3,800 US is excessive for ordinary productivity |
| 128GB LPDDR5X-8000 shared memory suits large local-AI and media workloads | Memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded |
| Radeon 8060S is strong for integrated graphics | Not a mainstream gaming-value proposition |
| OCuLink provides a direct PCIe 4.0 x4 eGPU path | OCuLink is not hot-pluggable and adds desk hardware |
| Two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots | Front I/O lacks USB-C and a card reader |
| Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and 2.5GbE | Only one USB-C port, so a dock is likely for creative desks |
| Selectable Silent, Balanced and Performance profiles | Power, noise and benchmark results vary by profile |
Who should buy the GMKtec EVO-X3?
Buy it if you have a specific, memory-intensive workload that benefits from a small computer: local language models, large photo libraries, multi-layer video projects, software builds or a compact workstation that may gain a desktop GPU later. The combination of 128GB shared memory, fast integrated graphics and OCuLink is unusual in a mini PC.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding a second NVMe SSD increase the EVO-X3’s usable memory?
No. The SSD provides additional storage for files, applications and project caches, while the 128GB LPDDR5X pool remains the only system memory available to the CPU and integrated GPU. A second drive can reduce storage pressure but cannot let you load a larger model into RAM.
Is a USB4 dock necessary for every EVO-X3 owner?
No. A keyboard, mouse, one display and Ethernet can fit the built-in connectors. A dock becomes worthwhile when you regularly attach card readers, several USB devices, external drives or additional display accessories, but all docked devices share the single upstream USB4 connection.
What should I do if my workload eventually needs more than 128GB of memory?
There is no internal memory upgrade path, so plan for that limit before purchasing. You can reduce model size or context, move some work to another system, or use an external GPU for graphics capacity, but neither an SSD nor an eGPU changes the EVO-X3’s system-memory ceiling.
Can I treat the EVO-X3 and an OCuLink enclosure like a permanently connected desktop?
You can leave the enclosure connected for a fixed workstation, but changing the connection requires a full shutdown of both devices. If you frequently switch between portable and eGPU modes, that procedure is less convenient than a hot-pluggable interface.
