The global technology selloff became less severe as trading moved from Asia into Europe and the United States on October 15, 2026. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged 7.5% and Japan’s Nikkei lost 5%, but U.S. benchmarks finished higher: the Nasdaq rose 0.1%, the S&P 500 gained 0.3% and the Dow advanced 1%. The pause does not remove the underlying risks. Hot U.S. producer-price inflation, expensive financing for artificial-intelligence infrastructure and weakening AI-related credit all remain in view.

Why did the global tech selloff ease in the U.S.?

The session split into two distinct phases: an Asian capitulation followed by stabilization in Europe and the United States. Selling was most intense where technology and semiconductor shares had already become concentrated, while later-session buyers found support in government bonds, broad U.S. equities and early corporate earnings reports.

Market or sector October 15, 2026 move Context
South Korea KOSPI -7.5% About 20% lower in roughly one week
Japan Nikkei -5% Major Asian technology-market decline
STOXX 600 -0.35% at 635.54 Measured at 0709 GMT
European technology sector -3.2% Rate-hike concerns followed strong U.S. producer inflation
Nasdaq Composite +0.1% Finished slightly higher in the U.S.
S&P 500 +0.3% Recovered after earlier pressure
Dow Jones Industrial Average +1% Outperformed technology-heavy indexes
U.S. technology sector -0.5% Individual technology shares remained weak

Chip stocks still recorded a seventh consecutive losing session, their longest such streak in four years. That detail matters: index stability reflected gains in non-technology areas and defensive positioning, not a broad technology recovery.

What triggered the AI-led selloff?

Hot U.S. producer-price inflation revived concern that the Federal Reserve could keep interest rates higher for longer. Higher discount rates reduce the present value investors assign to fast-growing companies, while higher borrowing costs directly pressure firms that must finance data centers, chips, power contracts and other AI infrastructure.

The immediate issue was therefore not only whether AI demand is real. It was whether the capital needed to build that capacity would remain available at acceptable terms. Reuters reported that technology shares were particularly vulnerable to simultaneous changes in AI sentiment and borrowing costs.

Is the AI stock rout turning into a credit crisis?

Credit markets showed more stress than the headline U.S. indexes. Bonds issued by CoreWeave for 2032 maturities, only four months old, traded below 80 cents on the dollar—a level Reuters described as typically distressed. The cost of insuring against defaults by major U.S. AI companies also reached records.

Those signals do not establish that a systemic credit crisis has begun. They do show why the equity selloff could become self-reinforcing if financing conditions deteriorate further.

How a financing loop could amplify losses

  • Debt-funded AI expansion becomes more expensive as yields and credit spreads rise.
  • Weaker cash-flow expectations increase the chance of downgrades or lost investment-grade ratings.
  • Some institutions must sell downgraded debt under mandate or risk limits.
  • Forced selling pushes prices lower, raising financing costs for other infrastructure borrowers.
  • Private-credit and off-balance-sheet borrowing can make exposures harder to see until losses appear.

This is the key distinction between an ordinary rotation out of expensive technology shares and a broader financing problem: a credit event can restrict new capital even after equity prices appear to have stabilized.

Why were Treasuries rallying while technology stocks fell?

Investors moved toward U.S. Treasuries as a safe haven during the equity shock, despite the inflation surprise. The 10-year Treasury yield fell 10 basis points to 5.08%, and Reuters described the bond performance as one of Treasuries’ best days of the year.

That apparent contradiction reflects competing forces. Inflation normally pushes yields higher, but a sharp equity decline can create demand for liquid government debt, while investors also reassess growth and financial-stability risks. The October 15 move suggests that the safety and liquidity bid temporarily outweighed the inflation pressure.

How long do technology rotations usually last?

Historical data cited by Reuters from Deutsche Bank show that rotations since mid-2024 lasted an average of 67 days and a median of 59 days. Technology drawdowns during those rotations averaged 16.6%, with a 14.6% median.

These figures are context, not a timetable for the current selloff. A rotation can end sooner if earnings, rates and credit markets improve, or last longer if borrowing costs and downgrades keep rising. The median duration is roughly two months, but it does not predict a bottom or guarantee a repeat of past patterns.

What should investors watch after the global AI selloff?

The next session’s calendar contained several potential market-moving events. Investors were scheduled to assess the following:

  1. Central-bank communication: remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.
  2. Inflation and trade data: euro-zone trade figures and final September inflation, plus U.S. September import prices.
  3. U.S. activity: September industrial-production data, which could clarify whether higher rates are slowing the real economy.
  4. Official meetings: IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, where debt and financial-stability concerns may receive further attention.
  5. Credit pricing: prices of AI-related bonds, default-insurance costs and rating actions. These are more important for systemic risk than a single index rebound.

Jamie McGeever of Reuters summarized the balance of evidence: “We’re not at crisis point yet — look at the rebound in US stocks and bonds today — but vigilance is required.” The combination of a U.S. equity rebound and stronger Treasuries supports a stabilization reading for October 15, while distressed AI debt keeps the deeper-risk scenario open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 7.5% KOSPI drop mean for global investors?

It signals concentrated stress in a major semiconductor and technology market, but it does not automatically forecast an equal decline in U.S. indexes. Currency moves, local positioning, market hours and sector composition can make regional losses diverge sharply.

Why can bond prices rise when inflation is above expectations?

Government bonds can attract safe-haven demand during an equity shock. If investors prioritize liquidity and recession or credit concerns, that buying can push yields down even while inflation data would normally push them higher.

What would confirm that AI credit stress is becoming systemic?

Evidence would include broadening default-insurance costs, multiple downgrades or losses of investment-grade ratings, difficulty refinancing unrelated borrowers and forced selling across private-credit portfolios. One distressed bond alone is a warning signal, not proof of contagion.

Which market data can distinguish a technology rotation from a crisis?

Watch credit spreads, new-debt issuance, Treasury-market liquidity and the performance of banks alongside technology indexes. A rotation usually remains concentrated in high-valuation sectors; a crisis tends to spread through funding markets and otherwise healthy borrowers.
