Choose glass when breakage is manageable
Glass can be a sensible home choice if the tumbler will mostly stay in one place and you want to see its contents. Is glass safer than plastic for drinking?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it regulates food-packaging materials, including BPA, when components can reasonably be expected to migrate into food. Its consumer Q&A says BPA is used in some polycarbonate plastics and that the agency’s current safety review supports currently approved uses in food containers and packaging. The FDA page describes a four-year review completed in 2014 that considered more than 300 scientific studies; it says that review did not prompt a change to the agency’s assessment at that time. For heat, NIEHS advises against microwaving polycarbonate food containers. It also notes that migration from polycarbonate bottles may depend more on the temperature of the liquid or bottle than on the bottle’s age, and suggests glass, porcelain, or stainless steel for hot food or liquids when possible. - Confirm food-contact use. Choose a tumbler labeled for drinking or food contact; do not treat all plastics or all glass products as interchangeable.
- Check temperature limits. Read the label for hot-liquid, microwave, and other heat restrictions. Do not microwave a polycarbonate food container, per NIEHS guidance.
- Check care for every part. Follow the maker’s dishwasher instructions for the cup, lid, seal, coating, and printed surfaces. A general statement about glass or plastic does not establish care compatibility for a particular product.
- Inspect before reuse. For plastic, Taiwan FDA’s 2015 consumer guidance recommends avoiding prolonged high heat and physical damage, and replacing containers showing abnormal aging, scratches, or cracks. Apply the product’s own directions as well; the Taiwan guidance is not a universal legal rule.
- Consider where it will go at end of life. Local collection rules and product construction affect disposal. Material names or recyclability alone do not establish which tumbler has the lower overall environmental impact.
Does glass or plastic have a lower environmental impact?
The available evidence here does not establish a general environmental winner for reusable glass versus plastic tumblers. A fair comparison would need to account for the actual products, how long they are used, breakage and replacement, cleaning, and local end-of-life options.
