It gives eligible users selected AI coding features—currently including 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests per month—so they can evaluate Copilot without a subscription. Paid plans provide broader access, larger or different allowances, and additional features.
What GitHub Copilot Free is
GitHub Copilot Free is a no-cost individual plan that lets eligible developers try GitHub’s AI coding assistance without subscribing to a paid Copilot plan. It is useful for occasional code completion, experimentation, learning, and evaluating Copilot’s workflow. It is not an unlimited version of Copilot: the Free tier has monthly allowances and does not include every Copilot feature, model, or agent capability.
GitHub’s current plan materials describe Free as limited access to selected Copilot features and models. The exact model catalog, feature availability, and limits can change, so check GitHub’s live plan documentation before relying on a particular capability. The comparison below reflects information checked on August 13, 2026.
What GitHub announced in December 2024
GitHub announced Copilot Free on December 18, 2024, alongside its announcement that the GitHub community had passed 150 million developers. The launch positioned the new tier as a way for people with personal GitHub accounts to access Copilot in Visual Studio Code without paying for a subscription.

At launch, GitHub described two main monthly allowances:
- 2,000 code completions per month
- 50 chat messages per month
The launch announcement referred to Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI GPT-4o as model choices available at that time. Those names describe the launch-era offer, not necessarily the current Free-tier model list. GitHub’s model catalog has expanded and changed since then, and current access may depend on the plan, feature, IDE, geography, and rollout status.
On December 19, 2024, GitHub also announced Free-tier support for JetBrains IDEs. That announcement described the same 2,000-completion and 50-chat-request limits and a 64k context window for that integration.
What Copilot Free includes now
GitHub’s current plan information identifies 2,000 code completions per month for Copilot Free and specifies 50 chat requests, including Copilot Edits. GitHub’s setup documentation also describes Free as offering limited chat and agent usage rather than unlimited access to those workflows.
In practical terms, Free is best understood as an evaluation allowance:
| Use case | What Free means in practice |
|---|---|
| Inline suggestions | A monthly allowance of 2,000 code completions. |
| Chat and Copilot Edits | A combined or related allowance documented by GitHub as 50 chat requests, including Copilot Edits. |
| Agent features | Limited access where the selected environment supports them; do not assume unlimited agent use. |
| Models | Selected model access that can change over time. Current plan documentation should take priority over launch announcements. |
| Editors | Support varies by IDE and feature. Code completion is broadly supported, but chat, agents, code referencing, and other capabilities are not identical everywhere. |
A casual learner or hobbyist may find these allowances sufficient to understand how AI-assisted development works. A professional developer using Copilot throughout the day may reach the limits quickly, especially when using chat or agent interactions repeatedly. That is a practical inference from the fixed allowances and the difference between Free and paid plans, not an independent usage benchmark.

Which editors support Copilot Free?
GitHub’s feature matrix covers integrations for:
- Visual Studio Code
- Visual Studio
- JetBrains IDEs
- Eclipse
- Xcode
- Neovim
Individual features differ between these environments. For example, an editor may support inline completion while offering a different level of chat, agent mode, code referencing, or Copilot Edits support. GitHub labels the feature matrix as a public preview and recommends using current stable versions of the IDE and Copilot extension.
Before installing, check the current supported IDEs for GitHub Copilot information and confirm that the feature you want is available in your editor. Copilot is not a separate physical product and does not require a particular laptop, keyboard, monitor, or other accessory.

Who can use Copilot Free?
Copilot Free is intended for individual developers who do not already have Copilot access through an organization or enterprise. It is particularly relevant to:
- Students and hobbyists exploring AI-assisted programming
- New GitHub users who want to try Copilot before subscribing
- Developers who need occasional inline suggestions or chat assistance
- People comparing coding assistants before choosing a paid plan
If your GitHub account receives Copilot through an employer, school, or other organization, do not assume that you can separately activate Free under the same account. GitHub’s plan documentation distinguishes individual access from organization- or enterprise-assigned access.
Verified students, teachers, and eligible open-source maintainers may have separate free-access routes or different eligibility. Check GitHub’s current eligibility documentation rather than assuming Copilot Free is the best route for your account.
How to start using GitHub Copilot Free
- Use or create a personal GitHub account. Copilot Free is associated with an individual GitHub account, subject to GitHub’s current eligibility rules.
- Start Copilot Free through GitHub’s Copilot access flow. Review the plan and privacy choices shown during setup rather than assuming that the 2024 launch terms are unchanged.
- Install the Copilot extension for your IDE. In Visual Studio Code, use the Extensions view to find the official GitHub Copilot extension. Other supported environments have their own extension or plugin installation process.
- Authenticate with GitHub. The IDE or plugin will ask you to sign in and authorize Copilot with the GitHub account that has access.
- Test inline completion first. Open a code file, add a comment or begin a function, and wait for a suggestion. Accepting, rejecting, or editing a suggestion lets you evaluate the basic workflow without immediately spending chat requests.
- Try chat only when it adds value. Use it for explanations, debugging ideas, test suggestions, or small transformations, while keeping the monthly request allowance in mind.
GitHub also documents a Copilot CLI installation path for command-line use. CLI availability and its usage accounting should be checked against the current documentation because command-line, agent, and other advanced interactions may be treated differently from ordinary code completions.

Copilot Free versus paid Copilot plans
The meaningful distinction is not simply “free versus paid.” Copilot Free is a limited evaluation tier; paid plans are designed for people who want more sustained use and broader access.
| Area | Copilot Free | Paid plans |
|---|---|---|
| Code completions | 2,000 per month under the current plan information. | Copilot Pro is described as including unlimited code completion and next-edit suggestions, subject to GitHub’s plan terms. |
| Chat and Edits | 50 chat requests, including Copilot Edits, according to GitHub’s plan FAQ. | Higher or different allowances, depending on the plan and interaction type. |
| Models | Limited selected-model access; current documentation may restrict Free to auto model selection. | Broader model access and additional plan-specific options. |
| Agents | Limited access where supported. | Paid tiers add or expand capabilities such as cloud agent workflows. |
| Code review | Not every paid feature is included. | Paid plans add capabilities such as code review, depending on the plan. |
| Administration | Designed for individual use. | Business and Enterprise plans add organizational controls, administration, and enterprise features. |
GitHub’s Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise offerings differ in model access, AI credits, administration, and other features. Prices, plan names, allowances, and model catalogs are volatile, so use GitHub’s current GitHub Copilot plans page when deciding whether to upgrade from Copilot Free. Do not treat a comparison written on a particular date as a permanent price or feature guarantee.
How AI Credits affect paid-plan usage
GitHub uses AI Credits as a usage-based billing unit for many Copilot interactions. GitHub states that one AI credit equals $0.01 USD, while the number of credits consumed depends on the model and the complexity of the interaction.
Interactions that can consume credits include:
- Chat
- Agents
- Copilot CLI
- Spaces
- Spark
- Third-party coding agents
GitHub treats code completions and next-edit suggestions differently under paid-plan billing. Therefore, “unlimited code completion” should not be read as unlimited access to every premium model, agent, CLI workflow, or other Copilot feature. Review the plan’s credit allowance and the stated cost behavior of the feature you intend to use.

Privacy: check the individual-plan data setting
GitHub’s current data-use policy says that, beginning April 24, 2026, it may use interactions from Copilot Free and other individual plans to train and improve AI models. The stated scope includes inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context. GitHub says individual users can opt out through their personal Copilot settings.
Before using Copilot with sensitive material:
- Open your personal GitHub settings and go to the Copilot settings area.
- Find the setting governing use of your Copilot interactions for model training or improvement.
- Review the current wording and choose the opt-out option if appropriate.
- Do not paste confidential, proprietary, regulated, or otherwise restricted material until you understand the applicable settings and your organization’s policy.
Setting guidance and labels can change, so follow the controls currently displayed in your account. This policy does not mean that GitHub has said it will publicly expose a user’s code. It does mean that individual users should make an informed decision before sending private code or context to the service.

GitHub distinguishes individual-plan handling from Business and Enterprise treatment. Its current policy documentation says Business and Enterprise customer data is protected under GitHub’s Data Protection Agreement and is not used to train AI models under the stated policy. Organizations should still review their contractual, security, and acceptable-use requirements.
What Copilot Free cannot guarantee
Copilot generates suggestions; it does not replace developer judgment. Generated code may be incomplete, incorrect, insecure, incompatible with the surrounding project, or unsuitable for the project’s license and distribution requirements.

Copilot Free is a good fit if you:
- Want to try inline code completion without a subscription.
- Are learning a programming language and want occasional explanations or examples.
- Build hobby projects and can work within a monthly allowance.
- Are comparing AI coding assistants before paying for one.
- Use a supported IDE and do not have organization-provided Copilot access.
Consider a paid plan if you:
- Use code completion throughout a full working day.
- Regularly rely on chat, Edits, agents, CLI, or premium-model workflows.
- Need broader feature access or more predictable capacity.
- Want paid-plan capabilities such as expanded model access, cloud agent workflows, or code review.
- Need organizational administration or enterprise controls.
Start with Free if you are uncertain. It provides a realistic way to learn whether Copilot improves your workflow, but reaching the monthly limit is part of the evaluation—not evidence that the service is malfunctioning.
Bottom line
GitHub Copilot Free makes AI coding assistance available to eligible individual developers without a subscription. Its current offer includes 2,000 monthly code completions and 50 chat requests, but access to models, agents, and other features is selective and subject to change. It is a useful entry point for learners, hobbyists, and occasional users; it is not an unlimited replacement for paid Copilot plans.
Before adopting it for serious work, check the current plan and feature documentation, review the individual-account data-use setting introduced for April 24, 2026, and continue to inspect, test, secure, and license-check every generated result.
