Short answer: no single checker is best for every GitHub-related investigation. JPlag is the strongest fit when you need private, local comparison of many student or team submissions. MOSS and Dolos are free peer-similarity baselines. Codequiry is the broadest option when you need peer comparison plus GitHub/web discovery, AI-code signals, and API or learning-management-system integration. Copyleaks is aimed at organizations that need an API pipeline covering online sources, shared data, and private repositories.
That distinction matters because comparing a supplied set of programs is a different job from finding copied code on GitHub or the public web. Similarity scores are leads for human review, not automatic proof of plagiarism.
What a GitHub code-plagiarism checker actually does
Code-plagiarism systems generally perform one or both of these tasks:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Peer comparison: compare a batch of submissions with one another and identify unusually similar pairs or groups.
- Web or repository discovery: search online sources, GitHub, shared collections, or private repositories for matching code.
Peer tools are most useful when an instructor, hiring team, or engineering manager already has the files. Discovery tools are useful when the suspected source may be outside the submitted batch. A checker designed for the first task can be excellent at structural comparison while having no public-web search at all.

Code can look different while retaining the same structure. Renaming variables, changing whitespace, reformatting, or making superficial edits may leave the underlying control flow and syntax relationships intact. Conversely, common boilerplate, framework scaffolding, and required assignment patterns can create legitimate matches. Any result therefore needs a reviewer who understands the assignment, the repository history, and the highlighted code.

How the major tools differ
JPlag: local, structure-aware comparison
JPlag is designed for a set of programs that you control. Its official project documentation describes the purpose directly: “JPlag finds pairwise similarities among a set of multiple programs.” Similarities are calculated locally, and the implementation is aware of programming-language syntax and program structure.
That local model is valuable when source code cannot be uploaded to a third-party service. It also makes JPlag a natural choice for a class assignment, coding test, or internal repository audit in which you need every submission compared with every other submission. The output identifies similar pairs and highlights matching regions for inspection.
Structure awareness can make similarities visible after variable renaming, formatting changes, or other cosmetic disguises. It does not establish universal accuracy across every language or every kind of refactoring; the language, parser, configuration, and nature of the rewrite still matter. Treat JPlag as an evidence-generation tool, not a verdict engine.

MOSS: a free peer-similarity baseline
MOSS is commonly used through a hosted submission workflow. In the comparison covered here, it is a peer-similarity service rather than a GitHub or public-web search engine, and it does not add an AI-code detector. That makes it useful when your question is simply, “Which files in this batch resemble one another?”
The service is frequently used as a no-cost academic baseline. The comparison identifies academic use as free, but service terms can change, so an institution should confirm the current Stanford conditions before building a graded workflow around it. Because MOSS is not presented as a web-discovery tool, it cannot answer whether a submission was copied from a random public repository unless that source is included in the submitted comparison set.
Dolos: open-source peer comparison
Dolos is another peer-comparison option. The vendor comparison describes both online and local ways to run it and identifies it as free and open source. It is a practical baseline when budget, inspectable tooling, or self-hosting matters more than integrated web and AI checks.

Codequiry: broadest scope for GitHub and web investigations
Codequiry combines peer comparison with GitHub and web source links, AI-code checks, and integration options. The documented deployment choices include a web dashboard, desktop software, an API, and a command-line interface. That combination suits teams that need one workflow for uploaded submissions, online-source discovery, and automated integration with an LMS or internal pipeline.
Its published benchmark is the strongest numerical result in the available material, but it is still a vendor-run comparison rather than an independent universal ranking. The service itself warns that common code patterns can create similarity and recommends reviewing highlighted matches. A high score should therefore trigger an investigation into provenance, timing, and assignment requirements rather than an automatic accusation.
Copyleaks: API and private-repository workflows
Copyleaks documents source-code API scans against online sources, its Shared Data Hub, and private repositories. A webhook-oriented API workflow can return results to an organization’s own system, which is useful for continuous intake, code-review gates, or a central case-management process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe documentation also states that AI-content detection is not supported for source-code files. Do not interpret a source-code similarity result as an AI-authorship judgment, and do not assume that an AI detector covers programming files simply because the product offers AI detection for other content types.

What the published accuracy numbers mean
Codequiry published a benchmark in 2026 using 2,400 Java assignments. The reported metrics were:
| Tool | F1 score | Recall | False-positive rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Codequiry | 95.0% | 94.0% | 0.3% |
| MOSS | 83.5% | 87.0% | 2.1% |
| JPlag | 86.7% | 81.0% | 0.9% |
| Turnitin | 69.2% | 72.0% | 4.3% |
F1 is a combined measure of precision and recall. Recall indicates how many of the labeled positive cases were found; the false-positive rate indicates how often legitimate cases were incorrectly flagged. Those definitions help explain why no single number is enough: a system can find more positives while also producing more work for reviewers.
The figures apply to that Java dataset and the conditions chosen by the publisher. They are not an independent, cross-language league table. The report included 31 obfuscated positive cases and said detection varied by tool. Obfuscation in that set does not predict performance on every refactoring style, language, framework, or assignment. If the decision has disciplinary, employment, or legal consequences, test candidate tools against a labeled corpus that resembles your own code.
Choosing a tool by your actual job
You need private comparison of a batch of submissions
Start with JPlag when keeping source and results on your own machines is the priority and the main question is which submissions resemble one another. Its local execution and syntax-aware comparison fit this case. MOSS and Dolos are useful free baselines when hosted or online operation is acceptable, but they do not provide the same documented local-first model as JPlag.

- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
You need GitHub or public-web source links
Choose Codequiry when the workflow must combine peer comparison with GitHub/web discovery and AI-code signals. A peer-only tool cannot search for a suspected external source that was never included in the submission set.
You need an API connected to a private code estate
Copyleaks is the clearest fit when the requirement is an API pipeline that checks online sources, a shared repository of contributed material, and private repositories. Plan the webhook, authentication, retention, and human-review steps before sending production code.
You need a free second opinion
Run MOSS or Dolos as a peer-only baseline, or run JPlag locally, then inspect the highlighted regions manually. A second tool can reveal whether a result is robust, but disagreement is not proof that either system is wrong; each may tokenize or model structure differently.

| Codequiry Advanced | $99 per month | Included quotas, overage rules, retention, and API limits |
| Copyleaks | Pricing not stated in the cited documentation | Request current API, repository, storage, and volume pricing |
Commercial prices and quotas can change. Confirm the current plan page, contract terms, supported languages, data-retention policy, and cancellation rules before committing. For free tools, “free” does not remove the cost of local infrastructure, updates, parser troubleshooting, or the staff time required to review alerts.
A defensible review workflow
- Define the comparison set. Preserve the original files, commit identifiers, timestamps, assignment instructions, and any starter code. Decide whether the question is peer copying, external-source discovery, or both.
- Remove legitimate common material. Mark instructor-provided scaffolding, required library calls, generated files, and standard templates so reviewers do not mistake them for copied work.
- Run a peer tool. Use JPlag, MOSS, Dolos, or the peer component of Codequiry on the complete batch. Keep configuration and version information with the report.
- Run discovery only when needed. If the suspected source may be online or in a private repository, use a tool that documents that scope, such as Codequiry or Copyleaks. A peer-only report cannot establish an external match.
- Inspect highlighted code. Compare control flow, unusual constants, comments, error handling, data structures, and identical mistakes. Common boilerplate alone is weak evidence.
- Check provenance. Review Git history, branch dates, pull requests, pair-programming records, dependency versions, and permitted collaboration. Similar code can arise from a shared template or legitimate joint work.
- Record a human conclusion. Keep the original match, the reviewer’s reasoning, the student or developer’s explanation, and the final decision separate from the automated score.
Privacy, security, and operational cautions
Local execution limits exposure of sensitive source code and can simplify compliance review, which is why JPlag is attractive for proprietary or student data. Hosted dashboards and APIs can be easier to operate at scale, but procurement teams should confirm encryption, retention, deletion, regional processing, access controls, and whether submitted code contributes to a shared corpus.
For private repositories, define exactly which repositories and branches may be scanned and how credentials are scoped. Use read-only tokens where possible, rotate secrets, and keep webhook payloads free of unnecessary source content. A similarity service should not become an accidental mirror of your entire codebase.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Expecting MOSS or JPlag to search GitHub: these are presented as peer-comparison tools. Add a discovery-capable service or include the suspected source in the comparison set.
- Treating a score as a verdict: inspect highlighted code and account for common patterns, starter files, and legitimate collaboration.
- Assuming obfuscation-proof detection: structure-aware matching helps with renaming and formatting changes, but no source establishes universal accuracy across languages and refactoring styles.
- Comparing benchmark percentages without context: the published figures come from 2,400 Java assignments in a vendor-run 2026 study. Re-test on your own labeled examples.
- Assuming AI detection covers code: Copyleaks states that AI-content detection is not supported for source-code files.
- Ignoring operational cost: free software still requires hosting, updates, language configuration, and trained reviewers; paid plans may impose quotas and API limits.
Bottom line
Use JPlag for local, privacy-sensitive, structure-aware peer comparison. Use MOSS or Dolos when you want a free peer-only baseline. Use Codequiry when GitHub/web discovery, AI-code signals, and integrations belong in the same workflow. Use Copyleaks when an API must compare online sources, shared data, and private repositories. Whichever route you choose, treat automated similarity as triage evidence and make the final determination from the code, its provenance, and the surrounding rules.
