Contemporaneous reports identified it as the older GM-M6880X, also called the M6880X. Gigabyte said it was investigating and had contacted the user; the available cited reports do not establish what caused the fire or give a final investigation result.
What did the user report?
In a post on r/pcmasterrace on January 22, 2025, user lommelinn said they smelled smoke early in the morning and found their mouse “burning with large flames.” The user wrote that “Black smoke filled the room,” and said they extinguished the fire and found black particles in the room and on a modular synthesizer. Those details are the user’s first-person account; they are not an independently verified reconstruction of the incident.

Which Gigabyte mouse was involved?
Contemporaneous reports from Tom’s Hardware and HotHardware identified the mouse from its underside label as the Gigabyte GM-M6880X, also referred to as the M6880X. Both describe it as a wired optical mouse. HotHardware reported specifications of 1,600 DPI and Omron switches rated for 5 million clicks; those are product specifications, not measurements from the fire or evidence about its cause.
Did Gigabyte say what caused the fire?
No cause is established in the cited material. Gigabyte’s AORUS_Official account replied in the Reddit discussion that it was “actively looking into this case,” had reached out to lommelinn to offer support, and intended to investigate. This was an initial public response, not a final investigation report. The cited coverage does not give a later conclusion.
#1 Best Overall
- Real 16000 dpi Optical Sensor (Pixart 3389)
- Up to 400ips and 50G acceleration
- Adjustable Weight and Balance
- 50-million-click Omron Switch
- RGB Fusion-16. 7M Customizable Lighting
Because the reports describe the device as wired, a mouse battery is not an appropriate explanation for this incident. That fact does not identify whether an electrical fault, an external ignition source, or something else was involved; assigning a cause would be speculation.
Does this show the model has a safety defect?
No. The report documents one user’s account, not a verified failure mechanism, a model-wide defect, or a quantified safety trend. The cited sources provide no incident-rate statistic, independent test result, or forensic measurement. One report cannot establish how often this model—or wired mice generally—catch fire.
