For a standard PS5 connected to a 60Hz television, start with Performance. Its 60-fps target makes combat, camera movement, and riding feel more responsive than the 30-fps modes. Choose Quality for a sharper image, or Ray Tracing when lighting matters more than smoothness. A 120Hz display with VRR opens up Balanced and Ray Tracing Balanced, both designed around a 40-fps cadence. On PS5 Pro, Ray Tracing Pro is the strongest general-purpose starting point, while an uncapped option suits owners who prefer variable frame rates on a 120Hz VRR screen.
There is no universal best setting. Your console, display refresh rate, VRR support, and preference for responsiveness, detail, or ray-traced lighting determine the right choice.

Which Ghost of Yōtei mode is best on a standard PS5?
Use Performance on a normal 60Hz television unless image sharpness or lighting is your overriding priority. Quality and Ray Tracing retain a 30-fps presentation, while Performance targets 60 fps and therefore gives the clearest improvement in control response.
Performance
Performance is the practical default for most standard-PS5 players. The 60-fps target reduces the delay between an input and the next visible frame, which is especially noticeable when parrying, aiming, rotating the camera, or moving through the world. It is not the highest-resolution presentation, and dynamic resolution means its internal image can vary with scene complexity.

Choose it if you regularly switch between exploration and combat, dislike judder during camera pans, or sit close enough to a large 4K screen to notice motion more than small static details. Performance is also the least demanding recommendation for display setup: it does not require a 120Hz input or VRR. A conventional 60Hz television can show its intended target without special output features.
Quality
Quality targets 30 fps and allocates more rendering budget to resolution than Performance. Fine geometry, distant scenery, and small texture details can look cleaner on a suitable 4K display. The trade-off is a less responsive cadence: camera turns and combat animations update less frequently than in Performance.
Quality makes the most sense for slower exploration, photo-like viewing, or a player who notices shimmering foliage and distant edges more than input latency. It is still a 30-fps mode, so do not select it expecting the responsiveness of Performance. If you change from Performance and the game suddenly feels heavy or uneven, that is the normal difference in frame cadence rather than a fault with the console.

Ray Tracing also targets 30 fps, but spends more of the available budget on ray-traced lighting rather than the highest possible resolution. Use it when reflections, shadows, and light interaction are more important to you than a 60-fps response. It is a preference choice, not a required upgrade for enjoying the game.
Lighting differences are easiest to judge in motion: move between bright and shaded spaces, turn toward reflective surfaces, and watch how shadows and illumination respond. If those effects are subtle on your television, the responsiveness gain from Performance will usually be easier to appreciate. If you value the lighting treatment and accept a 30-fps cadence, Ray Tracing is the appropriate base-PS5 choice.
What should I use with a 120Hz and VRR display?
Enable the television or monitor’s 120Hz input and VRR support, then try Balanced first. Balanced targets 40 fps, which fits evenly into a 120Hz refresh cycle and improves image quality over standard Performance while remaining smoother than a 30-fps mode.
Balanced
Balanced is intended for a 120Hz-capable display. Its 40-fps target gives each frame 25 milliseconds of display time, compared with about 33.3 milliseconds at 30 fps, while leaving more rendering headroom for image quality than the 60-fps Performance target. VRR helps the display track modest frame-time changes rather than showing tearing.
That 40-fps target is not the same as 60 fps. Camera movement and controls will feel less immediate than Performance, but the cadence is noticeably smoother than 30 fps. Balanced is therefore a middle ground: select it when you want additional image quality and can use 120Hz, but do not want the heavier feel of Quality or Ray Tracing.
Ray Tracing Balanced
Choose Ray Tracing Balanced when you want the 40-fps cadence but prefer ray-traced lighting. It keeps the same 120Hz-oriented requirement and gives lighting priority instead of pursuing the maximum resolution available in the non-ray-traced Balanced mode.
Compare the two Balanced options in a location with foliage, moving shadows, and reflective surfaces. Keep Ray Tracing Balanced if its lighting improvement matters more than the extra fine detail of Balanced; otherwise, the standard Balanced mode is the safer image-quality compromise.

When a 120Hz setting does not appear to work
A 120Hz panel alone is not enough. The PS5 must be connected to a compatible HDMI input, the display’s enhanced or gaming mode may need to be enabled, and the console’s screen settings must report 120Hz output and VRR as available. If any link in that chain is limited to 60Hz, the game cannot deliver the intended 40-fps or uncapped behavior.
Check the television’s input label and menu, not just its headline refresh-rate specification. Some displays have only one port with the required bandwidth, while others require an enhanced-format toggle. After changing those settings, return to the PS5 video-output screen and restart the game so it detects the new capabilities.
What is the best graphics mode on PS5 Pro?
On PS5 Pro, start with Ray Tracing Pro if you want one mode that combines ray-traced lighting with a 60-fps target. It is designed for the Pro’s extra rendering capability and uses PSSR-oriented reconstruction to support a higher-quality image than the base-console performance presentation.
Ray Tracing Pro
Ray Tracing Pro is the most balanced Pro recommendation for a broad range of displays. It targets 60 fps while retaining ray-traced lighting, so you do not have to choose between the base PS5’s 60-fps Performance mode and its 30-fps Ray Tracing mode. The target is not a promise that every scene will remain at exactly 60 fps; dynamic workloads can still affect output.
It is the sensible starting point even if your television is only 60Hz, because the mode’s target and reconstruction approach are designed around the Pro. Then compare it with the base-style alternatives only if you have a specific preference for maximum sharpness, a different frame cadence, or less emphasis on ray-traced lighting.
Uncapped output
An uncapped option is useful only when the display supports 120Hz and VRR. It allows the frame rate to rise above a fixed 60-fps target when the scene permits, but frame pacing and image quality can vary more than in Ray Tracing Pro. Choose it if you prefer the highest possible responsiveness and accept variable results; choose the capped Pro mode for a more consistent presentation.
Uncapped does not mean permanently faster or automatically better. Heavy foliage, effects, lighting, and combat can still reduce output, and a display without VRR cannot smooth those changes. If you notice brightness fluctuations, judder, or inconsistent camera motion, return to Ray Tracing Pro rather than chasing a higher number.
Why do resolution numbers vary between modes?
Ghost of Yōtei uses dynamic resolution rather than one fixed internal pixel count. Sucker Punch’s technical deep dive describes a dynamic-resolution algorithm designed to work with image upsampling and PSSR, and explains that ray tracing and reconstruction were major areas of investment for the native PS5 game.
Resolution can change with scene complexity, lighting, foliage, effects, and combat. Consequently, a specification claiming one permanent internal resolution would be misleading. The useful published descriptors are the mode targets: 30 fps for Quality and Ray Tracing, 60 fps for standard Performance, and 40 fps for Balanced variants. Treat apparent sharpness as mode- and scene-dependent rather than as a single number.
This is why a mode can look crisp while standing still and softer during a busy fight. The renderer has more work to do when many effects, characters, shadows, or plants are visible. Judge each mode in motion and in the areas where you spend time, rather than from a paused screenshot or an isolated pixel-count claim.

How do PSSR and QSSR affect image quality?
PSSR is Sony’s reconstruction technology used by the PS5 Pro, and Ray Tracing Pro is described as using PSSR-oriented reconstruction. Current reporting also discusses QSSR-related reconstruction on the base PS5. The visible benefit may be steadier fine detail or reduced shimmer rather than a change to the frame-rate target.
There is no established QSSR setting that is best for every screen. Compare QSSR on and off in the mode you actually play, looking at thin foliage, distant geometry, text, and motion. Keep the option that produces the more stable image on your display; do not assume that an enabled reconstruction feature automatically improves every scene.
Make the comparison repeatable: stand in the same area, use the same camera angle, pan slowly, then sprint or fight through it. Look for crawling edges, unstable leaves, and detail that disappears during movement. Reconstruction can trade one artifact for another, so the preferred setting may differ between a large 4K television viewed nearby and a smaller or lower-resolution screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should I set HDR?
Do not copy a universal HDR slider value. HDR output depends on the television or monitor’s peak brightness, black level, calibration, picture mode, and the room’s ambient light.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and complete the three system calibration screens while the display is in its intended gaming picture mode.
- In Ghost of Yōtei, begin with the game’s default HDR values after the system calibration.
- Adjust the game’s paper-white or brightness control only while viewing dark detail and bright highlights in the game, using the same room lighting in which you normally play.
- If highlights clip, dark areas lose detail, or the image looks gray, recheck the television’s HDR tone-mapping and the PS5’s system calibration before changing game settings again.
HDR calibration is display-specific, so two correctly configured screens can require different in-game values. A setting that looks right in a bright shop showroom may be too dim or too aggressive in a dark room. Recalibrate if you change displays, switch picture modes, or move from daytime to a much darker gaming room.
How do I change and evaluate the modes?
Change one variable at a time and judge the mode during the activities that matter to you, rather than from a static pause screen.
- Confirm whether your screen is 60Hz or 120Hz and whether VRR is available. On PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output for the detected refresh-rate and VRR capabilities.
- Launch the game and open its graphics or display settings from the pause menu or title-screen options.
- Select Performance, Quality, or Ray Tracing on a standard PS5. If the console and display support 120Hz, also compare Balanced and Ray Tracing Balanced.
- On PS5 Pro, compare Ray Tracing Pro with the uncapped option only after confirming 120Hz and VRR. Use the capped mode if variable frame pacing is distracting.
- Walk through a foliage-heavy area, rotate the camera quickly, and perform combat inputs. Check responsiveness, fine-detail stability, and lighting in motion.
- Keep the setting that matches your priority. Do not select a 40-fps mode on a 60Hz-only display or expect an uncapped mode to behave like a locked 60 fps.
Give each choice enough time for your eyes and hands to adapt. Switching repeatedly after a few seconds can make every mode feel unfamiliar. If two options remain close, prioritize the activity you perform most: combat favors responsiveness, sightseeing favors detail or lighting, and mixed play favors the balanced modes your hardware supports.

What display and console settings are required?
- Standard Performance, Quality, and Ray Tracing: work on a standard PS5 and a 60Hz display; the latter two target 30 fps.
- Balanced and Ray Tracing Balanced: are designed for a 120Hz display and target 40 fps. VRR is strongly recommended to accommodate variation.
- Ray Tracing Pro: requires PS5 Pro and targets 60 fps with ray-traced lighting.
- Uncapped output: is a conditional PS5 Pro choice for a 120Hz VRR display; it is not a universal enhancement.
- HDMI connection: the console, cable, display port, and television settings all need to support the desired 120Hz or VRR signal. Replacing a cable alone cannot guarantee those features.
VRR is helpful but should not be treated as a substitute for the correct mode. A 120Hz screen without VRR can still meet the refresh requirement for a 40-fps target, while an uncapped Pro mode specifically benefits from VRR because its frame rate varies. Always verify what the PS5 actually detects instead of relying on a monitor’s marketing label.
Should you buy anything for these settings?
The game itself is available as the physical Ghost of Yōtei for PlayStation 5 Standard Edition. For display upgrades, look for a television or monitor specification that explicitly includes 120Hz input and VRR if you want Balanced modes or uncapped Pro output. A PS5 Pro is a secondary purchase for readers who want Ray Tracing Pro; it is not required to play the game well on a base PS5.
An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is only a conditional accessory. It can help when the existing cable is the limiting link, but buying a cable alone cannot add 120Hz or VRR to a console, display port, or television that lacks those capabilities. Confirm the full signal chain before spending money.

What are the common problems and fixes?
The game feels less responsive than expected
Check that Performance is selected on a 60Hz screen, or that Balanced is being used on a properly detected 120Hz display. Disable television processing such as motion interpolation and enable its game mode, since display-side processing can add latency independently of the game’s selected mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Balanced is unavailable or behaves like 30 fps
Verify the PS5 reports 120Hz output. Try another HDMI input marked for enhanced bandwidth, enable the display’s 120Hz or enhanced-format option, and then restart the game after changing the console output. If the display remains 60Hz-only, use Performance, Quality, or Ray Tracing instead.
VRR causes brightness changes or unstable motion
VRR can expose behavior that is hidden by a fixed refresh rate, particularly near the lower end of a display’s VRR range. Compare the same scene with VRR disabled; if the image is steadier without it, use a capped mode rather than uncapped output.
The image looks soft or shimmers in foliage
Dynamic resolution and reconstruction respond to scene complexity, so softness or shimmer can vary while moving. Compare Quality, Performance, and the available QSSR setting in the same area, then keep the mode whose fine detail remains most stable on your screen.
HDR looks washed out or too dark
Repeat the PS5 system HDR calibration, confirm the television is in its intended HDR gaming mode, and check that tone-mapping controls have not changed. Avoid compensating with a random universal slider value; the correct result depends on that display and room.

The recommendations match each mode’s published frame-rate target and image priorities to the capabilities of the display. The selection criteria are responsiveness, image sharpness and detail stability, ray-traced lighting, 120Hz and VRR requirements, capped versus uncapped behavior, and the different reconstruction approaches described by Sucker Punch and current technical reporting. No fixed mode-by-mode pixel table is published authoritatively for every current configuration, so the guide avoids inventing one.
The result is a conditional guide rather than a single winner. Performance wins when control response is the deciding factor; Quality wins when resolution comes first; Ray Tracing wins when lighting is the attraction. Balanced modes only make sense when the display can actually run their 120Hz-oriented cadence, and PS5 Pro’s uncapped option only makes sense when VRR can handle changing output.
Which setting should I use?
Use Performance on a standard PS5 with a 60Hz display, Quality when resolution is more important, and Ray Tracing when lighting is the priority. With 120Hz and VRR, Balanced is the general recommendation and Ray Tracing Balanced is the lighting-focused alternative. On PS5 Pro, Ray Tracing Pro is the safest all-round starting point; try uncapped output only if your 120Hz VRR display handles variable frame rates well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ghost of Yōtei require a 4K television for the best settings?
No. The modes work on lower-resolution displays, although the visible difference between Quality, Performance, and reconstruction options may be smaller. Match the setting to refresh rate and responsiveness first, then judge sharpness on the screen you actually own.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I use Balanced mode with a 60Hz monitor?
Balanced is designed around a 40-fps target that fits a 120Hz refresh cycle. A 60Hz-only display cannot present that cadence correctly, so Performance, Quality, or Ray Tracing is the more appropriate choice.

Is PS5 Pro necessary to get ray tracing in the game?
No. The standard PS5 includes a Ray Tracing mode targeting 30 fps. PS5 Pro adds Ray Tracing Pro, which targets 60 fps and uses Pro-oriented reconstruction, but the game remains playable on the base console.
Will a new HDMI cable automatically enable 120Hz and VRR?
No. The console, display input, cable, and display settings must all support the signal. A cable can remove one limitation, but it cannot add 120Hz or VRR capability to hardware that lacks it.
Is 40 fps really smoother than 30 fps?
Yes, when the display can run the 120Hz-oriented cadence. A 40-fps target presents a frame every 25 milliseconds, compared with about 33.3 milliseconds at 30 fps, so camera movement and controls generally feel more fluid. It is still slower than a 60-fps target.
Do I need VRR for Balanced mode?
Balanced is designed for a 120Hz display, while VRR is strongly recommended to accommodate frame-time variation. If your display cannot report the required 120Hz output, use a standard 60Hz mode instead.
Is Ray Tracing mode worth using on the base PS5?
It is worthwhile when ray-traced lighting matters more to you than responsiveness. The mode targets 30 fps, so Performance is the better choice if combat response and smooth camera movement are your priorities.
Should I use uncapped output on PS5 Pro?
Use it only with a 120Hz VRR display and only if you prefer higher but variable frame rates. Ray Tracing Pro is the safer option when you want a more consistent presentation and capped 60-fps target.
Does PSSR change the frame-rate target?
PSSR-oriented reconstruction supports the image in Ray Tracing Pro; it does not turn that mode into an uncapped presentation. Frame-rate behavior still depends on the selected mode and scene workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould QSSR always be enabled?
No universal setting is established for every screen. Compare QSSR on and off in the mode you actually use, checking foliage, distant geometry, text, and motion, then keep the version with the more stable image.
Why does the image soften during combat?
Ghost of Yōtei uses dynamic resolution, so the internal image can change with lighting, foliage, effects, and combat complexity. Judge the mode in motion rather than expecting one fixed pixel count in every scene.
What HDR value works for everyone?
There is no universal value. Calibrate HDR in the PS5 system settings first, then tune the game’s controls for your display, picture mode, peak brightness, and room lighting.
Can a PS5 Pro replace a 120Hz television?
No. Ray Tracing Pro can target 60 fps on the Pro, but Balanced and uncapped recommendations still depend on a display that supports the required refresh rate, and uncapped output specifically requires 120Hz and VRR.
Where can I buy the game?
The exact physical purchase path is the Ghost of Yōtei for PlayStation 5 Standard Edition. A PS5 Pro or 120Hz VRR display is optional hardware for particular graphics modes, not a requirement to play.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: choose Performance for a standard PS5 and 60Hz display, Balanced for a 120Hz screen, and Ray Tracing Pro for a PS5 Pro starting point. Move to Quality or Ray Tracing when image detail or lighting matters more than responsiveness, and use uncapped output only with a 120Hz VRR display.
