In Ghost of Yōtei, combat advice is built around choosing the right weapon for the opponent—not switching among the named stances from Ghost of Tsushima. PlayStation’s recommended matchups are straightforward: katana against sword users, dual katana against spear users, ōdachi against heavy enemies, yari against sickle wielders, and kusarigama against groups or shield users.

Are there stances in Ghost of Yōtei?

The official combat guide describes Atsu’s melee choices as five distinct weapons, each with a purpose. It does not present the old game’s named stance set as the system to follow. Instead, switch weapons to meet the encounter: the publisher says knowing when to switch is central to success in combat. The matchup recommendations below are PlayStation’s stated roles, not a tested ranking of damage or effectiveness.

Which weapon should you use against each enemy?

Weapon PlayStation’s stated role Practical matchup Emphasis
Katana Precise and balanced Rival sword users Dueling
Dual katana Fast, flowing combos Spear enemies Speed
Ōdachi Powerful and heavy, with unstoppable attacks Heavy enemies Power
Yari Long-range control that interrupts attacks Sickle-wielding enemies Reach and interruption
Kusarigama Wide-reaching chain and sickle Groups and shield users Crowd control and breaking shields

For the common matchup questions: use dual katana against spear enemies, and kusarigama against shield users. Use the katana for a sword duel, ōdachi against a heavy opponent, and yari when facing a sickle wielder. The official descriptions do not give comparative damage figures, precise timing windows, or exact combo routes, so treat these as role-based recommendations rather than guarantees.

How do you unlock weapons and improve combat skills?

Atsu unlocks weapons by training under master warriors. Altars of Reflection found across the land let her upgrade skills and learn new Techniques. If your available options feel limited, seek out those training and altar opportunities to expand your combat toolkit; the official guide does not prescribe a mandatory unlock order.

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

How should you approach fights with the Warrior build?

Sony’s Warrior build guide describes a melee-focused approach that emphasizes stagger damage and utility against multiple foes. For that build, Eric Whelan, Content Communications Manager at Sony Interactive Entertainment, recommends parrying incoming attacks and using heavy attacks to stagger enemies quickly. He also says the weapon must be aligned to the opponent for that armor’s abilities to activate. This is advice for the Warrior build, not a universal rule for every build or difficulty.

What other combat tools can Atsu use?

Melee weapons are only part of Atsu’s options. PlayStation lists short and longbows with specialized arrows, a Tanegashima matchlock with two ammunition types, and quickfire tools that include kunai, smoke bombs, and blinding metsusubushi. Atsu can also disarm enemies and use their weapons, tackle foes while mounted, and call on her wolf companion. These are additional tools to consider as situations change; the official combat page does not provide their detailed button sequences.

Ghost of Yotei (PS5)
  • Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
  • Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
  • Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.

Is Lethal Mode a good choice?

PlayStation describes Lethal Mode as a more realistic combat experience in which weapons are deadly and precise timing is crucial. Choose it if you want a more demanding experience; it is not a default recommendation for beginners. The official guidance does not establish that one weapon tactic or build works equally well across every difficulty setting.

How do you switch weapons?

The official combat and product pages used for these recommendations do not state the button mapping for switching weapons. Check the current in-game controls menu for the correct input on your setup rather than relying on a guessed button combination. PlayStation also notes that DualSense adaptive triggers support bow, grappling-hook, and battle actions, while haptic feedback supports katana combat; those features are not required to play.
