“Getting Edgy with Machine Learning” was a 2024–2025 design challenge from Infineon and Hackster.io. It invited makers to build Internet of Things (IoT) applications that run machine-learning tasks on edge devices, using Infineon’s PSoC 6 AI Evaluation Kit, model CY8CKIT-062S2-AI. The contest is over; its projects remain useful examples of how local sensor data can drive embedded applications.

What was the Getting Edgy with Machine Learning challenge?

The challenge asked participants to bring machine learning to edge devices to solve IoT problems. Rather than send every sensor reading to a remote service for analysis, an edge-ML project processes data on or near the device that collected it. That can support responsive, locally operated prototypes, though it does not by itself establish that a project is reliable or suitable for commercial use.

Infineon announced the challenge with Hackster.io in September 2024. The contest page now identifies it as over. Its historical deadline was May 22, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, with winners scheduled to be announced by June 13, 2025. Infineon’s announcement and the Hackster contest page describe the event.

What hardware and tools did participants use?

The PSoC 6 AI Evaluation Kit

The central hardware was Infineon’s PSoC 6 AI Evaluation Kit, model CY8CKIT-062S2-AI. Contest materials describe a PSoC 6 microcontroller alongside radar, a digital MEMS microphone, a barometric pressure sensor, IMU sensors, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity. The mix supports experiments with audio, movement, radar, and environmental sensing.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those sensors suggest different project directions, not guaranteed capabilities in every setting. For example, a microphone can provide audio for sound classification, an IMU can capture movement, radar can detect presence or motion, and pressure readings can contribute environmental context. A useful project starts by matching the sensor and the data it can collect to a clearly defined task.

From sensor readings to a deployed model

The contest’s general workflow was to collect sensor data, train a custom model in DEEPCRAFT Studio or select a DEEPCRAFT Ready Model, deploy it to the board using ModusToolbox, and document the working project. Contest materials said DEEPCRAFT Studio was available for Windows at that time; that historical statement should not be treated as confirmation of current compatibility or product terms.

The contest FAQ required a trained model, the named kit, DEEPCRAFT Studio or a Ready Model, and ModusToolbox. It also called for documentation such as a bill of materials, instructions, images, and relevant files, including code or schematics. These were contest requirements, not a current setup guide.

What kinds of projects came out of the challenge?

Hackster’s recap covered prototypes spanning several sensing modes and applications:

The examples show how varied the intended applications were; they do not prove commercial readiness or validated performance across real-world environments. The recap describes its medical-related example as demonstrative, not a substitute for a certified medical device. Hackster’s winners recap also quotes contest judge and Infineon product manager Sarah Hemmer: “I was amazed by the creativity of the contestants and the variety of use cases that were tackled as part of the challenge.”

How to apply the project lessons to a new build

Use the challenge examples as starting points, not recipes. A sensor-to-model prototype depends on the relationship between the task, the collected data, and the environment in which the device will operate. The contest FAQ identified data quality, realistic deployment, and model robustness as judging considerations.

  1. Define one observable task. Specify what the device should recognize or estimate, and what action should follow. “Classify a small set of household sounds” is more testable than “understand the home.”
  2. Choose a sensor that captures the relevant signal. Consider whether the task is best represented by audio, motion, radar, pressure, or a combination. Check that the chosen sensor can collect useful data under the intended conditions.
  3. Collect representative examples. Include the normal variation the device is likely to encounter, rather than relying only on clean or convenient samples. Data collected in one room, on one appliance, or under one set of conditions may not represent other environments.
  4. Select a model path. A custom-trained model fits a task when you can assemble suitable labeled data; a Ready Model is another option where an appropriate model exists. The challenge materials describe both paths but do not establish that a particular model will work for a new application.
  5. Deploy and evaluate in the intended setting. Test the deployed behavior where the device is meant to operate, including relevant background noise, movement, placement, and connectivity conditions. A successful demonstration alone does not establish robustness or safety.
  6. Document what the prototype actually does. Record its hardware, instructions, code or schematics, and the conditions under which it was evaluated. Be clear about limitations and avoid presenting a prototype as a validated product.

Can you still enter, and what would you need for a similar project?

No. The Getting Edgy with Machine Learning contest has concluded, and its deadline and prizes are historical. The FAQ listed $2,500 for Best Overall, three $500 runner-up awards, $1,000 each for Radar, Motion, and Microphone category winners, and $500 for Best Use of DEEPCRAFT Ready Models. These were contest awards, not current offers or general edge-ML benchmarks.

The CY8CKIT-062S2-AI is the hardware most directly associated with the challenge and could be considered for a similar prototype. The contest materials linked to a purchase source, but current Amazon availability, price, stock, and affiliate participation have not been established. Check current vendor and retailer information before buying; the kit is optional hardware for a new project, not a way to enter the closed contest.
