To get a website found in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, make it accessible to each service’s retrieval path, keep it eligible for ordinary search, and publish original pages that answer specific questions with evidence. There is no guaranteed ranking, citation, or special “AI file.” ChatGPT uses the named OAI-SearchBot crawler, Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for publisher access, and Gemini’s AI features rely on Google Search’s existing crawl and index. Your work is therefore a combination of technical access, conventional SEO hygiene, citation-ready writing, and measurement.
The most reliable sequence is to audit robots.txt and your CDN or WAF, confirm important pages can be crawled and rendered, improve the pages that deserve citations, then monitor logs, Search Console, referrals, and sampled answers. Treat visibility as probabilistic: even compliant pages may not be crawled, indexed, shown, or cited.
What does “found” mean on these AI search services?
“Found” can mean that a crawler retrieved your page, that the page entered a search index, that an answer system used a passage, or that the answer displayed a link to your site. Those are different outcomes. A technical fix can make a page accessible without making it useful enough to quote, while an excellent article can remain invisible if a firewall blocks the crawler.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use four checkpoints for each important URL:
- Reachability: the platform’s crawler can request the page through your robots.txt, CDN, WAF, firewall, and origin.
- Search eligibility: Google can crawl, index, and show a normal snippet where applicable.
- Retrieval value: the page contains a clear, original answer with evidence and context that can be extracted without losing its qualifications.
- Observed visibility: logs, Search Console, referrals, and manual answer checks show whether the page is actually appearing.
These checkpoints prevent a common mistake: treating a robots.txt change as a ranking strategy. Access is necessary for discovery, not sufficient for selection or citation.

How does ChatGPT discover and cite websites?
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. For search visibility, the named crawler is OAI-SearchBot; it is separate from GPTBot, which OpenAI describes in connection with training use. You can allow search crawling while making a separate policy decision about training crawling.
Audit robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot
Open your site’s live /robots.txt and look for a rule that blocks OAI-SearchBot, either by name or through a broad wildcard rule. Review every group, including rules generated by a content-management system or security plugin. A search crawler must be able to reach the pages you want surfaced.
A minimal policy might identify the crawler explicitly, for example:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Use your own access policy and test the live file; do not copy a permissive example over carefully designed exclusions. An explicit allowance for OAI-SearchBot does not imply that GPTBot must be allowed.
Check the network path, not only the text file
OpenAI advises publishers to ensure that their host or CDN permits the published searchbot IP traffic. Inspect CDN, WAF, firewall, rate-limit, bot-management, and origin logs for denied or challenged OAI-SearchBot requests. A robots rule can say “allow” while a network control returns a block page or prevents the request from reaching the origin.
After a robots change, allow about the documented 24-hour adjustment window before judging the result. During that period, verify that the new policy is actually being served from every relevant hostname and protocol.
Make pages easy for retrieval systems to quote
Put the answer to the page’s main question near the top, then explain the conditions, dates, and exceptions. Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, visible author and reviewer information, and primary-source links. Keep a claim and its qualification together in the same paragraph so an extracted passage does not turn a conditional statement into an absolute one.

OpenAI’s publisher guidance does not promise placement. A page can meet access requirements and still be omitted from a particular answer because another source is more relevant, current, or authoritative.
How do I make a site discoverable in Perplexity?
Perplexity’s official crawler documentation identifies PerplexityBot as the publisher-facing crawler path to review when you want pages surfaced and linked in Perplexity results. Read that documentation again before changing robots.txt, firewall, or WAF rules because implementation details can change.
Review both robots and delivery controls
Check for a PerplexityBot block in robots.txt, then inspect the actual delivery path through your CDN, WAF, firewall, and origin. Confirm that requests receive the page rather than a login screen, bot challenge, empty shell, or error response. Test the public URL from the same hostnames that readers and crawlers use.
Do not assume that one robots rule explains every Perplexity fetch. The publisher crawler and a user-triggered page fetch can follow different paths. The documentation establishes the crawler to review, but it does not establish a universal crawl schedule, ranking formula, or IP-range policy you can safely assume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWrite for linked-source answers
Perplexity visibly links sources in its answer experience, so factual precision and clear attribution matter. Give each page one coherent task, name the source and date for important claims, and avoid burying the answer under generic introductions. Stable URLs, maintained update dates, and passages that stand on their own make a page easier to evaluate and link.
Because Perplexity can change crawler behavior, record the date of your last documentation review and recheck it after a material product or infrastructure change.
What does Gemini require compared with Google Search?
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve from the existing Search foundation. The practical requirement is ordinary Search eligibility: the page must be crawlable, indexable, and eligible to show a normal Search snippet. Google says there are no additional AI-only technical requirements.

Protect the Search foundation
For important pages, verify all of the following:
- The URL is publicly reachable and not unintentionally blocked by robots.txt, authentication, or network controls.
- The HTML and any necessary JavaScript render into useful, readable content.
- The page has a descriptive title, a logical heading structure, and a canonical URL.
- Internal links lead to the page from relevant, crawlable sections of the site.
- An XML sitemap includes important URLs and is maintained when pages are added or changed.
- Duplicate or near-duplicate URLs are consolidated rather than competing with one another.
- The page provides a usable experience on the devices and connections your audience uses.
Google recommends clear structure, accessible rendering, good page experience, and reduced duplication. It specifically says that special AI files, artificial mentions, and an over-focus on structured data are not requirements for generative Search visibility.
Measure Google’s AI exposure where available
Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance reporting when it is available for your property. Pair it with ordinary query and page reporting so you can distinguish growth in normal Search from appearances in generative features. Google also cautions that discovering a URL, crawling it, indexing it, and serving it are separate decisions; none is guaranteed.
What technical checklist should I follow across all three platforms?
Run the checklist in this order so you fix access failures before spending time rewriting content.
- Inventory priority URLs. List the pages that answer real customer questions or contain original data. Start with those URLs rather than trying to optimize an entire site at once.
- Test robots policies. Inspect the live robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot. Look for broad disallows, conflicting groups, and generated files that differ by hostname.
- Inspect CDN and WAF logs. Search for blocked, challenged, rate-limited, or misrouted crawler requests. Where a platform publishes IP information, verify the network policy against that published information.
- Request the real pages. Confirm priority URLs return successful responses without a login requirement or a client-only rendering barrier. Check redirects, canonical targets, and whether the content visible to a crawler contains the answer a reader needs.
- Maintain sitemaps and links. Submit an XML sitemap through your normal Google workflow and link important pages from relevant, crawlable pages. A sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
- Consolidate thin pages. Remove, merge, or substantially improve duplicative pages before producing more. A large URL count is not a substitute for useful coverage.
- Recheck after changes. Validate the live robots file and network behavior after deployment, then wait through the relevant crawler’s adjustment period before interpreting a lack of appearances.
How should I structure pages so AI systems can extract accurate answers?
Build each page around one genuine reader task, not a list of loosely related keywords. A citation-ready page answers the question promptly, supports the answer with evidence, and makes its limits visible.
Use a question-and-answer opening
Make the primary heading match the reader’s language, then answer it in one or two sentences. Follow with the conditions under which the answer changes. This lets a retrieval system identify a complete passage without stitching together distant sections.
Attach evidence and dates to claims
Link primary sources for technical, legal, product, or policy statements. Name the source and publication or update date in the surrounding text. If a figure is a one-time allowance, regional value, laboratory result, or promotional condition, put that qualification beside the figure.
Show who stands behind the page
Keep the author, reviewer, review date, methodology, and update history visible. Explain how measurements were obtained and what was not tested. This gives both readers and answer systems context for judging reliability.

Prefer original usefulness over volume
Google warns that mass-produced, low-value AI pages can violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. Add expert judgment, accuracy checks, relevant examples, and user context. Do not publish near-duplicate pages merely to create more URLs for crawlers.
How do the three discovery systems differ?
The following comparison separates the technical gate from the editorial work that follows it.
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Discovery control | Technical gate | Measurement to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Named OAI-SearchBot crawler; GPTBot is a separate training-use policy | robots.txt plus host/CDN permission for OpenAI’s published searchbot traffic | Server and CDN logs, manual citation checks, and referral data |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot publisher crawler path | robots.txt and the complete CDN/WAF/firewall delivery path | Server logs, referrals, and sampled linked-source answers |
| Gemini and Google AI features | Google Search crawl and index | Crawlable, indexable, snippet-eligible pages with accessible rendering | Search Console reporting, including Generative AI reporting when available, plus logs and referrals |
All three still depend on page quality. Technical access determines whether a system can retrieve a page; relevance, originality, accuracy, and context influence whether it is useful enough to appear.
What should I measure after making changes?
Use several signals because no single report captures every answer-engine appearance.
- Server and CDN logs: identify crawler requests, response outcomes, blocked paths, and changes after a robots or WAF update.
- Search Console: monitor indexing, queries, pages, and Generative AI performance reporting when Google provides it for your property.
- Referral analytics: look for visits attributed to AI answer services, while recognizing that referral data can be incomplete or unattributed.
- Manual sampling: ask representative questions in each service and record whether your page appears, which passage is used, and whether the displayed link is correct.
- Content records: track author, reviewer, source links, update dates, and methodology so you can explain changes in visibility.
Sample consistently: keep a fixed set of questions, locations, languages, and dates where relevant. Record the answer text and linked sources rather than relying on memory, because generated results can vary between requests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes prevent visibility?
Blocking the crawler unintentionally
A wildcard disallow, security plugin, bot challenge, or CDN rule can override the policy you intended. Check the actual response and logs from every delivery layer, not just the robots.txt text.
Allowing search access but blocking the content itself
A crawler may reach a URL that returns a login page, an empty JavaScript shell, or an error response. Ensure the publicly useful content is delivered without a user session and remains readable when scripts do not execute as expected.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming special files guarantee AI inclusion
Google does not require an “AI text file,” special schema, manufactured mentions, or an excessive structured-data strategy for its generative features. Concentrate on crawlability, clear structure, evidence, and people-first usefulness.
Publishing many weak pages
Mass-produced pages with little original value can create duplication and quality problems. Merge overlapping coverage and add expertise before expanding the URL count.
Promising rankings or citations
Neither compliance nor best practices guarantees crawling, indexing, serving, ranking, or citation. Report observed results and uncertainty instead of presenting a visibility tactic as a guarantee.

Failing to revisit platform documentation
Crawler names, policies, and product behavior can change. Recheck OpenAI and Perplexity documentation after material changes, and confirm Google Search Console features and guidance as they evolve.
What is the practical order of operations for a small site?
If resources are limited, focus on the highest-leverage sequence rather than attempting a full redesign.
- Choose five to ten pages that answer your most important real questions.
- Remove accidental blocks for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot, then verify CDN and WAF delivery.
- Ensure each priority page has a direct answer, descriptive title, accessible rendering, canonical URL, author, reviewer, date, and primary-source links.
- Strengthen internal links and maintain an XML sitemap.
- Consolidate thin or duplicative pages.
- Record a baseline of crawler requests, Search Console data, referrals, and sampled citations.
- Recheck the same measurements after the crawler adjustment period and after each major content or infrastructure change.
This approach improves the conditions under which all three systems can discover and evaluate your pages without relying on an undocumented shortcut.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every page be optimized for all three services at once?
No. Start with pages that solve a real, high-value task and make those technically accessible to all relevant crawlers. A focused set of strong URLs is easier to maintain, measure, and update than a site-wide batch of lightly edited pages.
Can a page appear in Gemini if it is not ranking highly in ordinary Google results?
Google’s AI features use the Search foundation, so the page still needs to be crawlable, indexable, and eligible for a normal snippet. Meeting those conditions does not promise a conventional ranking or an AI-feature appearance.
How can I tell whether a firewall, rather than robots.txt, is blocking an AI crawler?
Compare crawler requests in CDN, WAF, firewall, and origin logs with the public robots policy. A denied request, challenge page, or misrouted response shows that the network path needs attention even when robots.txt allows the crawler.
Is allowing a search crawler the same as allowing model-training crawlers?
No. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search visibility and GPTBot as a separate training-use decision. Set and review those policies independently according to your publishing goals.
