Iconoclasts and Cave Story+ are broader fits for character-led, retro-styled adventures. None is a direct copy: each preserves different parts of what makes Owlboy distinctive.
What makes a game feel like Owlboy?
Owlboy launched on Steam on November 1, 2016. D-Pad Studio describes it as a story-driven platform adventure set in a world among the clouds; the game’s defining movement also includes flight and carrying friends. Its appeal is therefore more specific than pixel art alone: it combines an authored world and narrative with traversal that is not just running and jumping.
Use four questions to decide which part you want in your next game:
- Story: Is the narrative a central draw, or mainly a frame for action and exploration?
- Movement challenge: Do you want room to explore, or platforming that demands repeated precision?
- Exploration: Do you prefer routes that open through a connected world, or more discrete stages and challenges?
- Visual style: Is pixel art essential, or would another distinctive 2D style work?
Best games like Owlboy, by what you want to keep
Celeste: personal story with precision platforming
Choose Celeste if the combination of a memorable personal story and 2D platforming matters more than flight or free-roaming adventure. Its strongest overlap with Owlboy is the way narrative and movement work together; the key difference is that Celeste puts much more emphasis on precise, demanding platforming.

The official site lists Celeste for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, itch.io, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Availability can vary by store and region, so check the relevant storefront before buying.
The Messenger: pixel-art action and exploration
The Messenger is a strong pick if your favorite parts of Owlboy were its retro presentation, action-platforming and discovery. Nintendo describes it as a pixel-art platformer in which exploration opens new areas. That supports a comparison on style and exploration, not on story or Owlboy-like flight.

Iconoclasts: a colorful adventure with a cast of characters
Try Iconoclasts if you want a broader platform-adventure recommendation with colorful presentation, characters and exploration. Genre coverage characterizes it as a metroidvania with talkative characters and many bosses. Its fit is in the larger adventure experience; the available description does not establish traversal like Owlboy’s flight.
Cave Story+: retro-styled narrative exploration
Cave Story+ suits players looking for a retro-styled 2D adventure built around a protagonist, a setting and a journey through multiple areas. It is an adjacent choice for story and exploration rather than a match for Owlboy’s particular movement.

Other options if you want to broaden the search
Axiom Verge may suit players who value exploration more than a story-forward experience. Hollow Knight is another atmospheric exploration game, but it is hand-drawn rather than pixel art and is a larger metroidvania. Both move further from the specific story-driven pixel-art platformer brief, so they are secondary choices rather than the closest matches.
