What makes a game genuinely similar to Ragnarök?

Which games are the closest overall matches?
1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Jedi: Survivor is the strongest all-round substitute for Ragnarök. Cal Kestis travels between planets with an over-the-shoulder camera, parry-and-stagger lightsaber combat, Force powers, traversal challenges and light environmental puzzles. The progression loop—new stances, abilities and gear opening routes through a connected world—fills the same role as Kratos’s weapons and skill trees.
Game Scout lists about 17 hours and a 4.3/5 rating from 56,157 ratings; the mixed player response on that page reflects the PC launch’s performance and bug problems. GameRant reported that the PS5 version became much smoother after launch updates. It is available on PS5, PC and Xbox Series, but not PS4, so it is not the choice for an older console.
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn swaps Kratos’s axe for Aloy’s bow, traps and machine-part targeting, yet preserves the cinematic scale and mythic revelation. Every large machine has readable weak points and attack patterns, making encounters feel deliberate rather than like ordinary shooter combat. Aloy’s journey through a world that mistakes advanced technology for myth also supplies the same sense of uncovering a larger legend.
Game Scout reports a 4.7/5 rating from 215,223 ratings and Metacritic 89. The game runs on PS4, PS5 and PC. Its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, expands the underwater and vertical exploration and adds larger machines; it is also on PS4, PS5 and PC. Nerd Flakes listed the sequel at about $69.99 in 2026, a list-price snapshot rather than a permanent store price.
3. Ghost of Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima is the closest match for cinematic lone-warrior weight. Jin Sakai changes sword stances to counter different enemy types, while duels use spacing, timing and lethal finishers instead of damage sponges. The open world is quieter and more spacious than Ragnarök’s realm-hopping route, but its composed camera, focused character arc and set-piece confrontations create a similar dramatic rhythm.

5. Final Fantasy XVI
Final Fantasy XVI is for players who remember Ragnarök’s largest cinematic clashes more than its exploration. The combat director previously worked on Devil May Cry, and Clive’s real-time abilities lead into enormous Eikon battles. 11. Stellar Blade

Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree

Its combat and boss quality fit Ragnarök fans who want challenge, but its structure is far less authored and its camera is not a continuous cinematic one. It is on PS4, PS5, PC and Xbox, with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Nerd Flakes listed about $59.99 in 2026.

Bloodborne, Lies of P and Wo Long
Bloodborne is the darkest option, built around aggressive healing and gothic horror; Game Scout reports Metacritic 92, a 4.7/5 rating from 290,724 ratings and about 12 hours. It is a PS4 title playable on PS5. Lies of P uses perfect guards and weapon assembly from interchangeable parts; Game Center lists a 20-hour How Long to Beat figure and metascore 84. Game Scout reports Metacritic 79 and 4.6/5 from 13,574 ratings. It is on PS4, PS5 and PC, and is a better fit for combo-heavy action than for the Norse games’ emotional restraint.
Evil West and Monster Hunter Rise
Evil West is a direct modern-formula experiment, combining over-the-shoulder melee and ranged weapons in arena-to-arena Weird West stages. It has less exploration than Ragnarök but runs on PS4, PS5, PC and Xbox. Monster Hunter Rise is the choice for players who mainly loved huge bosses and gear crafting; Monster Hunter Wilds opens the structure further but has been more divisive.
Other story-led options
Final Fantasy VII Remake combines real-time melee with tactical pauses and an expansive character story. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is an underrated Greek-myth action RPG. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a world-and-narrative alternative, but its turn-based combat with hybrid defenses is not a Ragnarök combat substitute. Ghost of Yōtei
Ghost of Yōtei is the most straightforward new recommendation: a PS5 sequel-like experience built around a new hero, Atsu, revenge in 1603 Ezo and a sharpened version of the Tsushima formula. The Reading Order ranked it fourth among its 2026 action games.
Marvel’s Wolverine
Marvel’s Wolverine is a linear, story-first PS5 hack-and-slash about rescuing captured mutants, with optional stealth, adamantium claws and a Team X reunion. The Reading Order reported a Metacritic 77, its lowest score among Sony’s first-party PS5 releases, citing combat depth below the Spider-Man games; critics still praised brutal fights, bosses and the lead performance.
