Short answer: FSR 4.1 is a clear image-quality step over FSR 3.1 in the cited Radeon RX 7000 scenes, especially for foliage, particles, fine lines and temporal stability. It can nevertheless render fewer frames than FSR 3.1 at the same named mode on older Radeon cards because the machine-learning model costs more. DLSS 4.5 leads FSR 4.1 in at least one difficult, independently compared game scene, but that is not a universal result. XeSS 3 has credible Intel and cross-vendor paths, yet the available evidence does not establish a controlled FSR 4.1.2-versus-XeSS 3 winner. Your best choice depends on the game, GPU, input resolution and whether you are comparing rendered frames or generated display frames.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 | Higher reconstruction quality on supported Radeon hardware | ML model; about 1.3 ms to upscale a 4K Performance frame on RX 9070 XT, according to AMD | RX 9000, RX 7000 and RX 6000 discrete GPUs; specified Ryzen processors; integration and driver conditions apply | Oct 2026 |
| FSR 3.1.6 | Analytical fallback and lower overhead on older integrations | Documented analytical fallback in AMD FSR SDK 2.4 | FSR 3.1-and-later integrations, subject to game and API support | Oct 2026 |
| DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution | GeForce owners seeking transformer-based reconstruction | Second-generation transformer Super Resolution; M and L models have heavier impact on RTX 20/30 | GeForce RTX generations, with model-dependent performance | Oct 2026 |
| XeSS 3 Super Resolution | Intel GPUs and compatible cross-vendor Shader Model 6.4 systems | Intel-optimized path plus cross-vendor SM 6.4 path; Quality preset uses a 1.7× resolution-scaling factor | Intel hardware and supported cross-vendor DirectX systems | Oct 2026 |
Is FSR 4.1 better than FSR 3.1?
For image quality, the cited RX 7000 comparisons favor FSR 4.1. It resolves more fine detail, keeps foliage and particles steadier in motion, and reduces some of the temporal instability visible with FSR 3.1. The improvement is not free: on older Radeon hardware, the extra model work can reduce rendered FPS at an identically named Quality or Performance preset.
That distinction matters because “better” has two meanings here. FSR 4.1 can produce a cleaner reconstructed frame while delivering fewer frames per second. A player who values stable detail may prefer it; someone trying to maximize refresh-rate headroom may choose FSR 3.1 or a different mode.
What changed in the reconstruction
- Fine geometry: thin wires, railings and leaves are less likely to shimmer or dissolve when the camera moves.
- Disocclusion: when an object moves away and reveals background detail, FSR 4.1 generally rebuilds the newly visible area more coherently.
- Transparent effects: particles, smoke and other translucent layers hold together better in the cited scenes.
- Temporal stability: repeated frame-to-frame changes are reduced, although no temporal upscaler eliminates every ghost trail or shimmer.
TechSpot’s RX 7000 testing found cases where FSR 4.1 Performance looked preferable to FSR 3.1 Quality. That is a game-and-scene observation, not a guarantee that the newer Performance preset always beats the older Quality preset. Read the comparison as evidence of a quality/overhead trade-off, not as a universal preset conversion.

Does FSR 4.1 lower FPS compared with FSR 3.1?
It can. The same named preset does not mean the same processing cost, and FSR 4.1’s machine-learning reconstruction takes more GPU time on older Radeon models. ComputerBase’s nine-game 4K geometric means show the effect clearly on an RX 7900 XTX:
| GPU and mode | FSR 4.1 | FSR 3.1 | Difference shown by the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| RX 7900 XTX, Quality | 52.6 FPS | 59.0 FPS | FSR 4.1 is lower in this nine-game mean |
| RX 7900 XTX, Performance | 65.2 FPS | 76.3 FPS | FSR 4.1 is lower in this nine-game mean |
Those figures are ComputerBase’s 2026 results for its selected games and settings, not a universal performance penalty. The gap changes with resolution, game engine, driver, GPU and implementation quality. A title with an efficient FSR 4.1 integration may behave differently from one with a heavier or less optimized path.
On newer hardware, the model cost can be easier to absorb. In the same ComputerBase 4K table, an RX 9070 XT produced 56.5 FPS with FSR 4.1 Quality and 71.9 FPS with FSR 4.1 Performance, compared with 37.6 FPS at native TAA. Because the RX 9070 XT and RX 7900 XTX are different GPUs, those rows cannot be used to isolate the upscaler’s cost. They show why GPU-to-GPU numbers are not substitutes for same-card comparisons.

How does FSR 4.1 compare with DLSS 4.5 image quality?
DLSS 4.5 and FSR 4.1 both use newer reconstruction approaches, but their results remain game-dependent. NVIDIA describes DLSS Super Resolution as using AI to produce a higher-resolution frame from a lower-resolution input in its developer documentation: NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation.

An independent TechSpot comparison found DLSS 4.5 Preset L visibly ahead of FSR 4.1 in one particularly difficult game scene. The observed advantage concerned detail and stability in that tested scene and model; it does not justify saying DLSS wins every game, every preset or every resolution. FSR 4.1 can appear sharper in some scenes, while that extra sharpness can also expose grain, ringing or instability.
What the DLSS model labels mean
DLSS 4.5’s second-generation transformer Super Resolution is available across GeForce RTX generations, but NVIDIA’s M and L model choices impose a heavier performance impact on RTX 20- and RTX 30-series cards. A newer model name therefore does not automatically mean the best frame rate on an older RTX GPU. Select the model exposed by the game and judge it at the output resolution you actually use.

Which artifacts deserve attention?
- Fine foliage: look for leaves that crawl, sparkle or smear during camera pans.
- Motion trails: inspect characters, fences and particles after fast movement rather than relying on a paused screenshot.
- Grain: a sharper reconstruction can make film grain, dithering and particle noise more conspicuous.
- Disocclusion: follow a moving object across a detailed background to see whether newly revealed pixels stabilize.
What is the difference between FSR 4.1 and XeSS 3?
XeSS 3 Super Resolution has two execution paths: one optimized for Intel hardware and another designed for cross-vendor Shader Model 6.4 systems. Intel lists a 1.7× resolution-scaling factor for its Quality preset, so a menu label such as “Quality” does not prove that XeSS and FSR render the same number of input pixels.
The available material does not establish a controlled, released FSR 4.1.2-versus-XeSS 3 image-quality and FPS result. It is therefore not defensible to rank one as the universal winner. Compare the actual game implementation, input resolution and output target on the specific GPU rather than inferring a result from the brand name.
How to make a fair preset comparison
- Record the GPU model, driver version, game build, API, output resolution and graphics settings.
- Check each upscaler’s actual input resolution. Intel’s 1.7× Quality scaling factor is a reminder that identical words can hide different workloads.
- Use the same rendered-frame metric. Do not substitute a vendor’s displayed FPS number when frame generation is enabled.
- Compare a moving foliage shot, thin geometry, particles, reflections and disocclusion—not just a still image.
- Repeat the check after changing modes because a sharper Performance image may be preferable to a softer Quality image in one engine, while the reverse is true in another.
Does FSR 4.1 work on RX 6000?
Yes, the October 2026 software state expands FSR 4 machine-learning upscaling beyond its original RX 9000 launch. AMD FSR SDK 2.4 documents FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 support for RX 9000, RX 7000 and RX 6000 discrete GPUs, plus a lighter INT8 model for specified lower-power Ryzen processors. AMD’s October 20 announcement describes this as an improvement for existing owners, not an automatic reason to replace a graphics card.

The implementation still has prerequisites. Eligible FSR 3.1-and-later DirectX 12 integrations can receive a driver-level ML-upscaling upgrade with Adrenalin 26.10.1 or later, while Vulkan and newer APU support have their own conditions. The SDK documentation also identifies FSR 3.1.6 as an analytical fallback. Read the current requirements in AMD’s FSR SDK documentation and verify that the individual game exposes or accepts the relevant path.

- Specified Ryzen processors: a lighter INT8 model is documented; the exact processor and API conditions matter.
- Xbox: AMD described console support as coming soon, not as already shipping in the October 2026 announcement.
Older articles that call FSR 4 exclusive to RX 9000 describe the original launch state. They should not be used as a description of the October 2026 SDK, but support is still integration- and driver-dependent rather than guaranteed for every game.
Is FSR 4.1 frame generation supported on the same GPUs?
No conclusion about frame generation follows from the upscaling matrix. Upscaling reconstructs each rendered frame; frame generation inserts additional displayed frames. They are separate features with separate hardware requirements.
- FSR 4.1.2 upscaling reaching RX 6000 does not mean AMD’s machine-learning frame generation also reaches RX 6000.
- NVIDIA’s 6X frame-generation option is specific to RTX 50-series hardware.
- Intel documents XeSS 3 Multi Frame Generation as available only on Intel devices.
When comparing FPS, first disable generated frames or report the rendered-frame rate separately. Otherwise a higher displayed number can simply reflect a different frame-generation feature rather than a faster upscaler.
What does the current FSR SDK mean for game support?
AMD FSR SDK 2.4 packages FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 and documents FSR 3.1.6 as an analytical fallback. A driver-level upgrade cannot turn every older title into a fully compatible FSR 4 game: the title must have an eligible integration, the API and driver must meet the conditions, and the particular game must expose a path the driver can update.

For a player, the practical checklist is:
- Install a driver version meeting the documented requirement, including Adrenalin 26.10.1 or later where the DirectX 12 upgrade applies.
- Check the game’s patch notes or graphics menu for FSR 4.1.2, an FSR 3.1-or-later integration, or a driver-level override path.
- Confirm whether the game uses DirectX 12, Vulkan or an APU-specific path; support rules differ.
- After enabling the mode, inspect moving detail and verify rendered FPS rather than assuming the menu label predicts either quality or speed.
Which upscaler should you choose?
Choose FSR 4.1 when image stability is your priority
On supported Radeon hardware and a compatible game, FSR 4.1 is the sensible first option when foliage, particles, thin geometry and temporal stability matter more than maximum rendered FPS. Its cited RX 7000 results show a meaningful quality improvement over FSR 3.1, but check the performance cost on your specific card.
Choose FSR 3.1 when the extra overhead is unacceptable
FSR 3.1 remains useful as an analytical fallback and can deliver more rendered FPS on older Radeon hardware at the same named mode. It is also the practical compatibility choice when a title does not expose the newer model or when FSR 4.1’s added processing pushes frame time over your target.
Choose DLSS 4.5 when the game’s implementation is clearly cleaner on GeForce
DLSS 4.5 is worth trying on an RTX card, particularly in a game where its transformer model controls foliage, disocclusion and fine detail more convincingly. The independent scene comparison gives DLSS 4.5 Preset L an advantage in one difficult title, but the result must be validated per game and model, especially on RTX 20/30 where M and L have greater cost.
Choose XeSS 3 when its path matches your hardware and game
XeSS 3 is a reasonable option for Intel GPUs and for supported cross-vendor Shader Model 6.4 systems. Treat its Quality label as a menu description, not a promise of equal input resolution to FSR or DLSS, and do not claim a universal visual or FPS lead without a controlled comparison of the actual release and settings.
How should you interpret the benchmark numbers?
Every quoted result needs its conditions attached. ComputerBase’s 52.6 versus 59.0 FPS Quality comparison and 65.2 versus 76.3 FPS Performance comparison are nine-game 4K geometric means on an RX 7900 XTX. The RX 9070 XT values of 56.5 FPS Quality, 71.9 FPS Performance and 37.6 FPS native TAA come from the same source table but a different GPU. AMD’s approximately 1.3 ms figure is an upscaling-time measurement for one GPU and mode.

Do not convert those figures into a universal percentage, combine them with DLSS or XeSS numbers from another GPU, or present displayed frame-generation FPS as if it were reconstruction performance. Vendor and publication measurements answer narrower questions than a single headline number suggests.
Bottom line: is FSR 4.1 worth using?
FSR 4.1 is worth enabling when your game and GPU support it and you want the cleaner temporal reconstruction demonstrated in the RX 7000 comparisons. Expect a possible rendered-FPS trade-off on older Radeon cards. DLSS 4.5 may look better in a demanding scene on GeForce, while XeSS 3 remains hardware- and implementation-dependent with no established four-way ranking. The reliable decision is to compare moving image quality and rendered FPS at matched settings on your own game build, while keeping frame generation reported separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a driver update add FSR 4.1 to any game?
No. The documented driver-level upgrade targets eligible FSR 3.1-and-later integrations, with API, driver and game conditions. A title without a compatible integration may continue to expose only its existing upscaler modes.

Why can FSR 4.1 look noisier than an older FSR mode?
Extra sharpness can make grain, dithering and particle noise more visible. TechSpot also reported occasional grain or instability differences between FSR 4.1 and FSR 4.0.3, so a sharper still image is not automatically steadier in motion.
Can an RTX 20-series card use DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution?
The second-generation transformer Super Resolution works across GeForce RTX generations, but NVIDIA’s M and L models have a heavier impact on RTX 20- and RTX 30-series hardware. Select the model that preserves your frame-time target.
Does an FSR 4.1-compatible RX 6000 card also get AMD’s machine-learning frame generation?
Not automatically. AMD’s RX 6000 expansion concerns upscaling; frame generation has separate support rules. Treat those two feature matrices independently.
Why do two “Quality” presets render different amounts of detail?
Preset names are not standardized workload guarantees. Intel documents XeSS 3 Quality at a 1.7× resolution-scaling factor, so compare each mode’s actual input resolution and rendered-frame rate rather than the label alone.
