Neither washer type is proven to stay odor-free more easily in every home. Top-loaders may be a little simpler to air out because they lack the front door gasket that front-load owners need to inspect and clean. But both designs can smell musty if moisture, detergent residue, or damp laundry is left behind. The most reliable odor prevention is the same for both: unload promptly, use the right amount of detergent, ventilate the empty washer, and clean it on the schedule in its manual.
Which washer is easier to keep odor-free?
A top-loader has one practical advantage: it does not have a front-door gasket with folds that can hold moisture, lint, hair, and residue. That makes one part of routine cleaning simpler. It does not make a top-load washer immune to odors, however. Detergent and soil residue can build up in either style, and a closed, damp machine can develop a musty smell.
Manufacturer care instructions establish useful prevention habits, not a measured comparison of odor rates or cleaning time between washer designs. So the fairest answer is that top-loaders may be simpler to air out, while neither type is a guaranteed low-maintenance winner.
Why does a washer smell musty?
Moisture stays trapped
Water left around a door seal, in the tub, or on damp laundry creates conditions for mildew and odor. Whirlpool recommends leaving the front-load door open between loads and warns that wet clothing left in the basket can lead to mildew and odors. Its guidance for a cited top-load model also recommends leaving the lid open between uses.

Detergent or soil residue accumulates
Using more detergent than the washer requires can contribute to buildup rather than make clothes or the machine cleaner. LG notes that detergent residue can build up around the drum and door gasket and cause odor. Use the amount and type specified by both the washer and detergent instructions, including HE detergent where the washer requires it.
A front-load gasket needs attention
Front-loaders have a door gasket that can collect lint, hair, debris, and moisture in its folds. Whirlpool and LG advise inspecting and cleaning the seal as directed for the specific model, then allowing the door area to dry. This is the main extra odor-related inspection point that distinguishes front-load care.
How the routine differs by washer type
| Maintenance issue | Front-load washer | Top-load washer |
|---|---|---|
| Dry between loads | Leave the door open between uses when the space and household setup allow. The seal area may retain moisture. | Leave the lid open between uses when practical, following the model manual. |
| Extra inspection point | Inspect gasket folds for lint, hair, and residue; clean using the manual’s method. | Check dispensers and any agitator or filter areas only if the model has them, following its manual. |
| Tub cleaning | Use the model’s Clean Washer cycle, if available, with an approved cleaner or procedure. | Use the Clean Washer cycle if available. Some models provide an alternative procedure when they lack that cycle. |
| Common odor risks | Trapped moisture, gasket residue, delayed unloading, or excess or unsuitable detergent. | Residue, delayed unloading, a closed damp lid, or excess or unsuitable detergent. |
These are examples from the cited U.S. manufacturer guidance, not a claim that every brand or model has the same parts, cycle, or cleaning procedure.
A simple odor-prevention routine
- Unload promptly. Remove wet clothes when the cycle ends rather than leaving them sitting in the washer.
- Ventilate the empty washer. Leave the door or lid open enough to dry, if safe and practical in your home.
- Clean the front-load gasket if you have one. Check its folds for lint, hair, and residue and follow the owner’s manual for cleaning. Clean dispensers as directed on either washer type.
- Measure detergent correctly. Follow the washer and detergent makers’ directions; avoid adding extra detergent in an attempt to prevent odor.
- Run the recommended tub-cleaning cycle. Whirlpool guidance and the cited top-load manual recommend monthly or every 30 wash cycles; LG’s general buildup guidance recommends monthly cleaning. Follow the schedule and procedure for your model.
Washer cleaner tablets are one option only when the manual says they are compatible. Some manufacturer procedures list washer cleaner and liquid chlorine bleach as alternatives, not products to combine. Do not generalize bleach quantities, cycle sequences, or warnings from one model to another; check the washer manual and cleaner label.

What if the smell remains?
If odor persists after repeated model-approved tub cleans and regular drying, consult the manufacturer’s support or service guidance for that model. LG says service may be needed when odor continues after multiple tub-cleaning cycles, and severe mildew may require professional cleaning. Avoid escalating to a stronger or improvised chemical mixture; cleaner compatibility and cycle instructions vary by washer.
