Neither free-to-play nor subscription MMOs are automatically cheaper. Compare what you will actually pay—and what you can still play—over the same number of months. Include the base game and expansions, recurring access charges, expected optional purchases, and any features or progression benefits those purchases unlock.
What “free-to-play” and “subscription” really mean
These labels describe a starting point, not a complete pricing system. An MMO may combine a free trial, a permanent free account, a subscription, separately purchased expansions, premium services, and in-game purchases. The mix can also differ by region or platform.
- Free-to-play: You can begin without a required recurring fee, but the free tier may limit content or features. Expansions or optional purchases may cost extra.
- Subscription: A recurring payment may unlock active access or a bundle of content, but expansions or other purchases can remain separate. Access to some modes may end when the subscription lapses.
- Hybrid: A game can offer a free tier alongside paid access, expansions, memberships, or microtransactions. Check the actual terms rather than assuming the label tells you what is included.
For example, ArenaNet says Guild Wars 2 never requires a monthly subscription or other fees to play. Its support page also explains that players can continue with a free account or buy expansions once to unlock additional features. By contrast, Blizzard says most active World of Warcraft modes require an active subscription, while its free trial provides limited access to modern content.
Compare the total cost over your actual play period
Choose a time horizon—such as six months or a year—and use it for every game. Add required costs separately from optional purchases you genuinely expect to make. Do not compare one game’s minimum subscription charge with another game’s theoretical maximum store spending: those figures describe different kinds of players and access.

- Set the period: Estimate how many months you expect to play. If you play in bursts, count only the months when you would pay for access.
- List required entry costs: Include any base-game or expansion purchase needed for the content you want. Note whether a purchase includes a trial or free-play period.
- Add recurring fees: Multiply the applicable subscription or membership price by the months you expect to pay. Apply any multi-month rate only if you will use the full term.
- Add expected optional spending: Include purchases you plan to make, such as premium services or items. Keep this separate from required access costs.
- Check what payment changes: Record which content, features, convenience benefits, or progression advantages are unavailable without payment.
- Check what remains after cancellation: Identify whether you can keep playing on a free tier, retain purchased expansions, or lose access to subscription-dependent modes.
- Match the price to your setup: Verify the game, region, platform, currency, and date. A price for one market or platform is not automatically valid for another.
A useful worksheet is: required purchases + recurring access fees + expected optional spending for the chosen period. Keep the three totals visible rather than collapsing them into a single number; that makes it easier to see whether the price buys access, content, or an advantage.
Illustrative official pricing and access examples
The examples below show why a like-for-like comparison matters. Prices are not global averages and can change. Check the linked official page for the terms that apply to your account and platform.

In the FFXIV example, paying for a longer Standard term reduces the listed cost per 30 days compared with the one-month Standard option, but only if you use the purchased term. A player who stops after a short stretch should compare the shorter commitment with the longer plan’s upfront charge, not just its per-period rate.

Ask what happens when you stop paying
Cancellation changes the value of a subscription differently from the value of a permanent free account or a one-time expansion purchase. Before committing, check what you retain and what becomes inaccessible when recurring payment ends.
- Subscription-dependent access: Some modes or content may require an active subscription. Blizzard’s WoW support page distinguishes subscription access from separately purchased expansion content.
- Free account remains playable: Guild Wars 2 says players can continue on a free account, even if they choose not to buy expansions.
- Purchased content versus active access: A purchase may unlock an expansion or features, but it does not necessarily replace an access fee where one applies. Read the game’s current terms for each content type.
For a game you expect to leave and return to, include the likely subscription months—not every calendar month—in your estimate. Also check whether returning later requires a new purchase or whether the account retains previously bought content; do not assume the rules are the same across games.
Check whether optional purchases affect progression
Optional spending can be cosmetic, convenient, or progression-related. That distinction may matter as much as the subscription price if you care about competitive balance or how quickly your character advances.

- Cosmetic: Changes appearance without claiming to improve character power or advancement.
- Convenience: Reduces friction or adds services, without necessarily increasing progression speed.
- Progression-related: Can affect experience, resource gains, item drops, or other advancement measures.
These categories are a way to inspect a particular game’s purchases, not a claim that every item fits neatly into one box. Gravity’s 2025 filing describes Ragnarok Online premium services that can increase experience accumulation or item-drop rates. Daybreak’s PlanetSide 2 FAQ lists increased experience, certification, and resource gains among the benefits of a PS4 membership offer. Those examples show that optional payment can affect more than appearance; they do not establish that free-to-play games generally sell progression advantages.

A quoted price without its market and platform can mislead. Gravity’s filing says pricing is shaped by operating and publishing costs, payment and user patterns, competition, and purchasing power; it also describes different models in different markets. Its examples include subscription-plus-microtransaction service in Japan and the end of subscription fees in the U.S. and Canada in April 2011. These are market-specific statements, not a universal current price list.

When you compare games, write down the region, platform, currency, and date alongside each figure. Recheck official pricing and access pages before paying, especially for recurring plans, expansion bundles, or an older membership FAQ.
Which model is the better fit?
Choose based on the way you play and the access you need, rather than the label alone.
- A free tier may suit you if you want to try a game at low upfront cost, can accept its content limits, and are comfortable buying expansions or extras only if you decide they are worthwhile.
- A subscription may suit you if the fee includes the content you want and you play often enough during paid months to justify recurring access. Predictable access spending can be useful, but separate expansion costs and cancellation rules still matter.
- A hybrid may suit you if its free access is sufficient for casual play and paid features are optional. Check whether those purchases affect convenience alone or also advancement.
No supplied example establishes typical player spending across these models, and the cited information does not prove that either model is universally cheaper or fairer. Your own total depends on the game, your play period, the content you want, and what you choose to buy.
