It is designed to let users and developers use Frax ecosystem applications with transactions executed on Fraxtal rather than directly on Ethereum. Following the North Star hardfork, the native gas token is FRAX—the asset formerly called FXS—not frxETH. That change is easy to miss because some older Frax pages still describe the earlier setup.
What is Fraxtal?
Fraxtal is a Layer 2 (L2) network in the Frax Finance ecosystem. Frax describes it as an EVM-equivalent rollup using the OP Stack as its smart-contract platform and execution environment. In practical terms, EVM equivalence is intended to make the network familiar to developers working with Ethereum-compatible applications and tools; it does not by itself establish that every application, wallet, or service is available on Fraxtal.
Frax’s 2024 Singularity roadmap presented Fraxtal as infrastructure for the wider Frax ecosystem and described plans for ecosystem growth and blockspace incentives. Those were roadmap goals, not guarantees that every proposed feature or application would launch.
Which token does Fraxtal use for gas?
FRAX is Fraxtal’s native gas token. Frax’s current gas-token documentation says FRAX is used to pay for blockspace. Frax reports that the North Star hardfork changed the gas token from frxETH to FRAX and deployed WFRAX, an ERC-20 representation of native FRAX. The hardfork status is described in Frax’s North Star governance update.

The name changes can be confusing. FXS was renamed FRAX, while the stablecoin that was previously called FRAX was renamed Legacy Frax Dollar. So, in current Fraxtal documentation, “FRAX” as the gas asset refers to the former FXS token, not the former FRAX stablecoin. Frax’s current token list distinguishes FRAX and WFRAX from frxETH and sfrxETH.

- WFRAX: ERC-20 representation of native FRAX on Fraxtal.
- frxETH: A separate Frax ETH-related asset. It was the network’s initial gas token, but is no longer the native gas token after North Star.
- Legacy Frax Dollar: The former FRAX stablecoin, renamed to distinguish it from the new FRAX token name.
Older Frax pages that call frxETH the gas token describe the earlier design, not the current one. Token addresses are operational details that can change or be confused with bridged versions, so check Frax’s live token documentation before using an address.

How do you get to Fraxtal?
The usual route described by Frax is to bridge assets from Ethereum to Fraxtal. A user needs the asset on the source chain and a suitable gas asset on the destination chain to make transactions there. Frax’s bridge documentation is the place to check the current route and instructions; its wallet documentation provides network setup information.

These are operator-published estimates, not independently measured averages or guarantees for an individual transfer; actual processing can vary. The published timings alone do not establish which return route is cheaper, available for every asset, or preferable for a particular user. Review the current bridge instructions before moving funds.

In a January 26, 2026 status update, Frax described FXTL as the primary Fraxtal incentive system while also noting that FXTL conversion and Flox Capacitor deployment had not been implemented or remained inactive, alongside some long-tail emission elements. Treat conversion rates, boosts, and claim eligibility as unconfirmed unless current official rules and contracts explicitly establish them.

What to keep in mind before using Fraxtal
- Check that your wallet is connected to the intended network and that you are using the correct token representation and chain.
- Read the current bridge route, fees, and transaction details before confirming a transfer; the documented time estimates are not a guarantee of completion by a particular time.
- Do not assume an application, incentive, or reward described in an older roadmap is currently live. Verify its current availability and terms through official Frax sources.
- Frax’s descriptions explain how the project presents its network and plans; they are not an independent assessment of security, decentralization, performance, or investment risk.
