For a group of four playing on one screen, start with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the safest all-around competition, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for versus matches, Overcooked! All You Can Eat for cooperative chaos, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge for approachable action. The right choice depends on whether you want teams or every-player-for-themselves play, how much time pressure your group enjoys, and which console you own. Controller requirements and local limits are not universal: four people on one screen need four controllers, while platform listings can differ substantially. Check the exact edition and console listing before buying.
The recommendations below separate same-console play from local wireless, show the currently documented player counts, and explain which game fits a mixed group, competitive players, or a cooperative team.
Which four-player local game should we play first?
If nobody has chosen a game yet, use this short list. It reflects Nintendo’s official single-system listings, GamesRadar’s January 28, 2026 Switch guide, Nintendo Support’s controller documentation, and CouchCoopDesk’s 2026 platform-by-platform store check.

| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | A mixed group that wants immediate competition | Competitive racing with a readable objective and Battle mode | Nintendo lists single-system play; GamesRadar ranked it first in its January 2026 local-multiplayer Switch guide. Verify the console listing for the exact player cap. |
| Super Smash Bros. Ultimate | Short, replayable versus matches | Fighting with adjustable rules, stages, and teams | Nintendo lists single-system play. Nintendo Support documents 2–4-player local wireless and several controller types; the current store-derived table lists Switch support for 1–8 players. |
| Overcooked! All You Can Eat | A cooperative team that enjoys communication and comic failure | Timed kitchen preparation under escalating pressure | Nintendo lists single-system, local-wireless, and online play. The cited guide describes the underlying Overcooked 2 experience as frantic local cooperation; the exact platform cap should be checked before purchase. |
| Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge | Four people who want straightforward action | Accessible beat-’em-up cooperation | CouchCoopDesk records PS5 1–4, Xbox Series X|S 2–6, and Switch 1–6 local players, with crossplay. |
For a quick decision: choose Mario Kart when skill levels are mixed, Smash when players want head-to-head rounds, Overcooked when the group likes solving problems under a clock, and Shredder’s Revenge when everyone would rather fight through levels together than compete.

Why is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the safest four-player starting point?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the most dependable first pick for a mixed group because its race objective is instantly understandable: steer, use items, and finish ahead of the others. GamesRadar’s January 28, 2026 guide ranked it first and called it the quintessential multiplayer Nintendo experience, pointing to its expanded track selection and Battle mode.
What kind of group fits it?
Use it when some players are experienced and others are picking up a controller for the first time. Racing gives everyone the same basic task, while item pickups can disrupt a runaway leader and keep rounds from becoming a pure test of technical skill. Battle mode provides a different competitive format when the group wants arenas rather than laps.
What should you verify before buying?
Nintendo’s official multiplayer roundup places the game in its “single system, local wireless, and online” group. That confirms the relevant play modes, but the roundup does not provide a universal four-player number for every platform because this is a Switch title. Check the current Nintendo store entry for the edition you will use, then confirm that your console and controllers are ready for the intended mode.

Races are active but legible: players can see the track, positions, and finish condition throughout. That makes it easier to stop after a race, rotate seats, or run a short tournament than with a game whose success depends on sustained coordination.
Is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate the best versus game for four people?
Yes, when your group wants direct competition with short matches and adjustable rules. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Nintendo’s strongest four-player versus recommendation in this list because players can fight individually or in teams, change stages and rules, and run repeated rounds without committing to a long campaign.
How many players can use one Switch?
The current store-derived comparison table lists Switch support for 1–8 players. Nintendo Support separately documents local wireless matches for 2–4 players, so do not treat those figures as interchangeable: one number describes the store listing, while the support page specifies the local-wireless setup it documents. For a four-person couch session, the one-system listing is the relevant purchase check.

Which controllers work?
Nintendo Support documents pairing a single Joy-Con, a paired Joy-Con grip, a Pro Controller, or a GameCube Controller. That flexibility is useful when a household owns mixed hardware. Four people still need four usable controllers for four simultaneous players; a single Joy-Con can count as one controller, not two.
How does it suit mixed skill levels?
Its adjustable rules let you shorten matches, add teams, or change the stage without changing games. New players can join a single round and leave after it, while experienced players can increase the challenge in the next match. Because the game is versus rather than cooperative, expect stronger players to win often unless you use teams or gentler rules.
When is Overcooked! All You Can Eat the right choice?
Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat when the fun comes from coordinating rather than defeating one another. Nintendo lists it for single-system, local-wireless, and online play. GamesRadar describes the Overcooked 2 format as local cooperative kitchen work: players prepare meals under time pressure, divide tasks, and recover from mistakes together.
What makes it different from the other picks?
Everyone shares the outcome. One person may prepare ingredients while another cooks, plates, or washes dishes, so communication matters more than individual reflexes. The clock creates a clear source of urgency, and humorous failures are part of the appeal.
Who should avoid it?
Do not pick it for a group that dislikes shouting instructions, repeating a level, or being judged by a shared score. GamesRadar specifically warns that the frantic coordination can cause bickering. If your group wants relaxed, turn-based play, Mario Kart or Smash is a safer first test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat mode should you check?
The Nintendo listing covers three distinct arrangements: single-system play, local wireless, and online. “Local wireless” can involve multiple nearby systems, while “single system” means sharing one console and screen. Confirm which arrangement your edition supports and whether you intend to use one display or several.

Why pick Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the accessible action choice for a group that wants to cooperate through levels instead of racing or fighting each other. Its beat-’em-up structure is straightforward: move through a stage, defeat enemies, and keep progressing as a team.
How many local players are supported?
CouchCoopDesk’s 2026 store-listing check records these local limits:
| Platform | Local players |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 1–4 |
| Xbox Series X|S | 2–6 |
| Switch | 1–6 |
The same check records crossplay. These figures are platform-specific, so a four-player session is supported on each listed platform, but the minimum and maximum differ. Confirm the exact store page for your console before purchase, especially if you are using an older or differently named edition.

Why is it approachable?
Players share a goal and can concentrate on movement and attacks without learning racing lines, item timing, or a large rule set. That makes it a good bridge between party games and more demanding action titles. It is also a practical choice when one person does not enjoy direct competition.
What other games support four local players?
CouchCoopDesk’s current comparison table includes several alternatives, but the local cap changes by platform. Treat the following as a shortlist for checking, not as a promise that every version supports the same number of people.
| Game | Documented local-player range | Platforms in the table | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Bomberman R 2 | 1–4 on PS5; 1–8 on Switch | PS5, Switch | Competitive rounds for groups that want an arena format |
| PICO PARK 2 | 2–8 | Xbox, Switch | Cooperative puzzles for a larger group |
| Boomerang Fu | 2–6 on Xbox; 1–6 on Switch | Xbox, Switch | Compact competitive matches |
| TowerFall | 2–4 on Xbox; 1–6 on Switch | Xbox, Switch | Local action for a group that wants a smaller arena |
| Brawlhalla | 1–4 | Xbox, Switch | Versus play when the group prefers a free-to-play-style fighting format |
Notice the pattern: the same title can list different minimums and maximums on Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation. A table entry is useful for narrowing your choices, but the platform’s current store listing is the deciding source.

How many controllers do four people need?
For four people playing on one screen, plan on four controllers. CouchCoopDesk states this requirement directly. A console’s advertised player count does not supply extra input devices, and a game’s ability to accept eight players does not mean two people can share one ordinary controller unless the game and hardware explicitly support that arrangement.

Switch controller planning
- Count each single Joy-Con as one controller when the game supports that configuration.
- Count a paired Joy-Con grip as one controller.
- Count each Pro Controller or compatible GameCube Controller separately.
- For Smash, Nintendo Support documents all four controller types above; pair and test them before inviting the group.
- Keep charging cables or charged batteries available. A controller that disconnects is effectively unavailable, even if the game supports the advertised player count.
PlayStation and Xbox planning
Use the platform-specific local-player number as a hardware check. For example, Shredder’s Revenge lists four-player local play on PS5, while its Xbox Series X|S listing goes to six. You still need one active, compatible controller for each person and enough console ports or wireless pairings for the session.
What is the difference between single-system, local wireless, and online play?
Single-system play means multiple people use one console, normally sharing one screen. This is the couch setup most readers mean by “four-player local.” Local wireless links nearby consoles over a local connection; it may require more than one system and can have a different player limit. Online play uses an internet connection and is not a substitute for a four-controller couch session.
Nintendo’s roundup places Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Overcooked! All You Can Eat in all three categories, while its listing for Shredder’s Revenge covers single-system and online play. Nintendo lists Smash among its single-system multiplayer games, and Nintendo Support’s 2–4 figure specifically concerns local wireless. Read the mode labels, not just the largest number shown in a store tile.
How should we choose between competition and cooperation?
Ask the group one question before launching a game: “Do we want one winner, or one team?” Then use the matching branch.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- One winner or winning teams: start with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for racing or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for arena fights.
- One shared score: choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat if everyone enjoys communication and time pressure.
- One shared campaign-like push: choose Shredder’s Revenge for direct, cooperative action.
- A larger group or changing attendance: check Super Bomberman R 2, PICO PARK 2, or Boomerang Fu, but use the platform-specific counts rather than assuming the Switch and Xbox versions match.
What can go wrong with a four-player local session?
Most failed couch sessions are setup problems rather than game-quality problems. Run this checklist before buying or starting.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Only two controllers are available: do not rely on the game’s maximum player number. Borrow, buy, or pair two more compatible controllers first.
- The store page shows a different number than an article: use the store listing for your exact platform and edition. The cited comparison shows real differences, such as Shredder’s Revenge being 1–4 on PS5 but 2–6 on Xbox Series X|S.
- Local wireless was mistaken for one-screen play: look specifically for “single system” when everyone must share one display.
- A mixed group quits after one round: choose a game with short, repeatable matches such as Smash, or rotate players after each Mario Kart race.
- Cooperative play turns argumentative: avoid Overcooked if the group dislikes time pressure; its coordination demands are a documented part of the experience.
- Different editions are being mixed: check the title, platform, and edition together. Player counts, prices, and online-service requirements can change.
What is the practical verdict for tonight?
Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when you need the lowest-risk starting point for four people with different experience levels. Choose Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the group specifically wants versus matches and flexible rules. Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat for a cooperative team that enjoys frantic communication. Choose Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge when four players want accessible action and your platform’s listing confirms the required local count.
Before paying, identify the exact console, distinguish single-system from local wireless, and count the controllers in the room. Those three checks prevent the most common four-player disappointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do local player counts differ between consoles?
Each platform holder and edition can impose different input, mode, or certification limits. That is why the same game may list 1–4 players on one console and 2–6 on another; the listing for your exact platform is the authoritative purchase check.
Does an “up to eight players” listing guarantee every mode supports eight?
No. A store maximum can cover the game overall while an individual mode, local-wireless arrangement, or controller type supports fewer people. Check the mode you plan to use rather than relying only on the headline maximum.
How many four-player games are in the current CouchCoopDesk list?
CouchCoopDesk’s 2026 list contains 120 games with at least four players on one console. Its entries still require platform-by-platform verification because local limits are not identical across consoles.
Does crossplay help a couch group with too few controllers?
No. Crossplay connects players on different platforms; it does not create additional local inputs on one console. A four-person couch session still needs four compatible controllers for the chosen system.
