Unsung is a Boston-based performance-footwear startup launched on October 22, 2026, by former Reebok leaders Dennis Baldwin and Brianna Henley with former Division I and professional hockey player Jody O’Neill. Its first product, the $188 Snapback Trainer, is a unisex training shoe designed for the sprinting, cutting, stopping, jumping and lifting common in hockey and lacrosse preparation. The shoe uses a carbon-fiber plate, TPU Stability Wings and a supercritical-foam midsole. Those features describe Unsung’s design intent, not proof that it outperforms established alternatives: no independent, published head-to-head trial is available.
What is the Unsung Snapback Trainer?
The Snapback Trainer is a multidirectional training shoe built around Unsung’s “L.C.S.” system—Load, Contain, Snap. Unsung says the platform is intended to manage force during loaded exercises, contain the foot during lateral movement and return energy when an athlete pushes off.
The initial audience is team-sport athletes, especially hockey and lacrosse players whose conditioning combines straight-line speed with abrupt lateral changes and weight-room work. The shoe launched in four colorways with unisex sizing and is sold directly through Unsung’s website.

These are the company’s product claims rather than independently verified comparative findings.

Who founded Unsung, and is it connected to Reebok?
Unsung is independent, not a Reebok sub-label. Baldwin spent nearly 12 years at Reebok, where he led product and later became chief marketing officer. Henley spent more than 15 years there, including running the sport-footwear business. O’Neill played Division I hockey at Dartmouth, later played professionally, worked with Baldwin at Breakaway Ventures and had experience with Tom Brady’s TB12 business.
Former Reebok chairman and chief executive Paul Fireman chairs Unsung’s strategic advisory board. Other advisers named in launch coverage include former Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, former Reebok and Hasbro executive John Frascotti, and former TB12 chief executive John Burns. Their involvement supplies industry and team-sport experience, but does not establish the shoe’s on-court or on-ice performance.
Why did the founders make a team-sport training shoe?
The founders say they interviewed more than 100 coaches, athletes and people training young players. Some respondents said they had not found a suitable shoe and had begun training barefoot. Their stated problem is a gap between running shoes, which can feel unstable during hard lateral cuts, and strength-training shoes, which may lack the cushioning and responsiveness needed for sprinting and jumping.

Henley also points to athletes beginning strength and conditioning at younger ages, with more emphasis on speed, agility and reaction. Baldwin described the movement in young athletes’ gyms as more explosive and dynamic than the workouts many general-purpose training shoes were designed around.
Is the Snapback Trainer good for hockey or lacrosse training?
Its geometry and marketing are aimed at those sports’ multidirectional off-field training, so it is a plausible option for athletes who combine acceleration, deceleration, lateral cuts and lifting in one session. It is not a skate, turf-specific boot or a substitute for sport-specific footwear during play.
There is no published independent head-to-head study showing that the Snapback is safer, faster or more stable than a particular running, lifting, basketball or court shoe. Fit, floor surface, training load and individual preference still matter. Athletes should use the return policy to assess heel hold, toe-box comfort and traction in their own workouts rather than treating the marketing architecture as a guarantee.

How does it differ from a running shoe or a lifting shoe?
| Training need | Snapback’s stated approach | Typical trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Sprints and push-off | Carbon plate and responsive SnapFoam | A stiffer platform may not suit every athlete or exercise |
| Lateral cuts and stops | TPU Stability Wings and heel clip | Containment depends on foot shape and lacing |
| Jumps and repeated impact | Supercritical foam cushioning | Cushioning feel is subjective and surface-dependent |
| Heavy lifting | Stable platform and 6 mm drop | Dedicated lifting shoes can still offer a firmer, more specialized base |
| Running-only mileage | Multidirectional design rather than road-running specialization | A conventional running shoe may be preferable for long, steady distances |
The useful comparison axes are lateral containment, propulsion, cushioning, loaded stability, weight, toe-box and heel fit, traction, price and return terms—not a single “best” label.
How was the Snapback developed and tested?
Development took more than two years. Forbes reports that more than 50 high-school, college and professional athletes, strength coaches and performance trainers wore prototypes during regular workouts and provided feedback. Heeluxe, described as an independent biomechanics laboratory, measured spring and cushioning.
O’Neill said no single fix emerged from the feedback and compared footwear development to baking: changing one ingredient or ratio can affect the rest of the design. This process indicates iterative development, not a published proof of superiority over named competitors.

What does Unsung’s launch say about the footwear market?
The launch arrives as U.S. footwear sales rose 1% in the first half of 2026, according to Circana. Performance-footwear dollar sales rose 6%, while running-shoe sales rose 13% in the same period. Forbes also cited a McKinsey comparison showing publicly traded challenger footwear brands growing faster than major incumbents from 2019 to 2024, while the two largest players lost three percentage points of market share.
Those figures describe the market, not Unsung’s sales. The Boston Globe reported that Breakaway supplied a $3 million seed round over the summer to support a six-person staff; Unsung has not disclosed its total funding.
Frequently Asked Questions
