What is the difference between full and open-hinge cases?
A full-coverage case adds material over the phone’s hinge. Some designs use a protector that moves as the phone opens; others simply describe full hinge coverage without specifying how the cover moves. An open-hinge case leaves the hinge exposed rather than adding a protective panel over it.
These are design descriptions, not protection rankings. A covered hinge may offer a barrier against direct contact, but the available product descriptions do not prove that it prevents damage in a drop. Nor do they show that an exposed hinge is more likely to fail.
How to choose between the designs
Check coverage and opening behavior
Look for a clear description of whether the hinge is covered and, if it is, how the cover moves. A moving protector should not interfere with opening the phone; when the manufacturer describes how it behaves, check whether it lies flat when the device is open.

Check size and weight for the exact case
Full coverage does not automatically mean a bulky or rugged case. Spigen describes its Thintect Pro for Galaxy Z Fold 7 as slim-profile with full hinge coverage. That is the maker’s product description, not a standardized measurement. The available examples do not provide a consistent set of thickness and weight measurements for comparing covered and open-hinge cases. Check published measurements for the specific case and phone rather than inferring bulk from coverage alone.
Verify the phone model and generation
Foldable cases are model-specific. A case listed for Galaxy Z Fold 7 is not interchangeable with one for Pixel 10 Pro Fold or another foldable. Confirm the complete phone name and generation on the case listing before buying.

Assess what the protection claim actually establishes
Terms such as “drop protection” and “hinge protection” on a manufacturer listing describe the maker’s claims. The cited listings do not provide independent, controlled comparisons of case performance, drop-test results, failure rates, or protection percentages. Do not treat a feature label as proof that one hinge design protects better than another.

Does the phone’s hinge design settle the case question?
No. Samsung’s 2025 interim report lists the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as a July 2025 launch and says its Armor FlexHinge distributes external shocks while enabling a slim design. That describes Samsung’s phone hinge; it is not evidence that a case with hinge coverage will prevent damage, or that one case design outperforms another.

- Match the full phone model and generation on the case listing.
- Decide whether you want the hinge covered, and check whether any cover moves with the phone and lies flat when open.
- Compare published size and weight measurements for the exact case if bulk matters to you.
- If you use magnetic accessories or wireless charging, verify compatibility for that specific case and phone; a general compatibility claim does not guarantee every accessory or position will work.
