Important scope: Cronos: Lazarus is the first story expansion for Cronos: The New Dawn, not a standalone PC game. It is scheduled for 3 December 2026 and has not released as of 30 October 2026, so there are no verified Lazarus-only crash logs, stutter reports, or corrupted-save cases yet. The practical fixes below apply to the live base game’s Unreal Engine 5 PC build and are the best preparation for the expansion.
Start by installing the newest base-game update, verifying the installation, disabling ray tracing and overlays, and trying -d3d11 if DirectX 12 crashes at startup. Back up %LOCALAPPDATA%CronosSavedSaveGames before resetting configuration files or loading an older save. Then use the symptom-specific branches for phylactery and Ascendance cutscene crashes, shader failures, out-of-video-memory errors, stutter, and progression blockers.
What is Cronos: Lazarus, and why are current fixes inherited from the base game?
Lazarus is a story expansion for Bloober Team’s Cronos: The New Dawn. Bloober announced it on 10 June 2026, describing the Warden as the protagonist who faces a relentless Tracker and receives a stronger combat focus. The studio called it “This isn’t a side chapter, this is the missing lore that contains Warden’s evolution and undisclosed secrets of the collective.”
The PC and console launch date reported by Steam, Wccftech, Gamereactor and PCGamingWiki is 3 December 2026. Wccftech places Nintendo Switch 2 in the first quarter of 2027, while Gamereactor lists 3 December 2026, so the Switch 2 date is unresolved. Press coverage reports a $9.99 Lazarus price, but Steam’s DLC row showed an N/A item price and a $14.99 combined “Add all DLC” figure on 29 October 2026. Treat $9.99 as a press-reported figure, not a confirmed checkout price.

Until the expansion ships, the useful technical evidence comes from the base game: Unreal Engine 5.5.4, Direct3D 12, the same local save/config tree, and Bloober’s existing support process. A new Lazarus cutscene or ability could introduce a different fault, so do not treat a base-game workaround as proof of a Lazarus bug.
What should I check before changing settings?
Confirm that the computer meets the official Windows requirements and that the base game is fully patched. The following specifications are from the live Steam listing.

PCGamingWiki lists the later macOS port as requiring Apple silicon, with an Apple M1 Max minimum, M5 Max recommended, 16 GB RAM and 25 GB storage. Its Linux entry uses a similar CPU/GPU/RAM/storage band and lists Vulkan 1.2 alongside Direct3D 12. Steam marks the game Steam Deck Verified. These entries describe the base game; Lazarus compatibility should be confirmed after release.

- Install the game on an internal SSD when possible. External storage appeared in one DX12 menu-crash report; an SSD does not eliminate shader hitches, but moving the install can remove a drive or connection variable.
- On a hybrid laptop, open Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics and assign Cronos to the discrete GPU.
- Remove overclocks while diagnosing. A stable stock configuration makes driver and shader errors easier to isolate.
How do I install the stability patch and verify the files?
Patch first. The console changelog calls the release update 1.005 (complete version 01.005.000); PC coverage calls the same first post-release stability drop Hotfix 1, version 323631. Bloober’s notes list several crash, save and rendering fixes.
- Open Steam Library, right-click Cronos: The New Dawn, choose Properties, then Updates. Allow any pending download to finish and restart Steam.
- Open Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Verification replaces damaged files and does not normally delete saves, but back up the SaveGames folder before any repair work.
- Launch once with default settings. Do not change a graphics preset while a cutscene or shader compilation is in progress.
The update fixed a crash during optional Warden dialogue; save-compatibility blockers at the church bell-tower barricade and church doors after the puzzle; the Pathfinder disappearing during a boss fight; repeated save/load in Edward’s apartment moving elevator panels into a blocking position; and autosaves that failed in the Apartment Zone (Past) basement or after the Apartment Zone (Future) boss when its achievement was already unlocked. It also fixed a Japanese-translation freeze while listening to echoes, travelogs or audiologs, Lumen GI artifacts after moving from Very Low to a higher preset, and enemies becoming stuck without a valid path.
Quality-of-life changes included an extra autosave before the brothers’ factory cutscene and a New Game+ stash information screen. GameDecide’s 23 October 2025 guidance still puts Patch 1.005/Hotfix 1 ahead of every workaround. If a save created before the patch remains blocked, load an earlier autosave or restart the affected area rather than repeatedly overwriting the same slot.
How do I stop crashes before the game reaches the menu?
Change one variable at a time, beginning with the settings most often associated with the base game’s GPU and memory failures.
Disable ray tracing and Hardware Lumen
Set ray tracing off, then restart. PCGamingWiki identifies the implementation as Lumen and Hardware Lumen; community reports and GameDecide place ray tracing at the top of the crash checklist. One AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT report crashed only with RT enabled. This is a troubleshooting state, not a permanent quality recommendation: re-enable RT only after a stable session.

Update or clean-install the graphics driver
Install the latest stable driver for the GPU. If a normal update leaves the same error, perform a drivers-only installation; AMD users in the published guide specifically tried installing without the Adrenalin software suite. Reboot before testing again. Do not stack a driver change, a config deletion and a new upscaler in one attempt because you will not know which change mattered.
Turn off overlays and fullscreen optimizations
Disable Steam and Discord overlays, NVIDIA ShadowPlay or other capture overlays, and any third-party performance overlay. In the executable’s Properties → Compatibility tab, test Disable fullscreen optimizations. Borderless windowed mode was more stable during alt-tab in one published guide; exclusive fullscreen can still work, so compare them only after the game launches reliably.
Use a launch-option fallback
In Steam, open Properties → General → Launch Options and enter one option at a time:

Steam user Nekro wrote in March 2026, “DX11 may look slightly worse, but it’s much more stable right now.” That is a community observation, not a universal rule: Geek Bastion reported a GTX 1060 running better with -dx12. Use DX11 to get into the menu, lower settings, and then retry DX12 if you want its performance.
If DX12 still launches, cap the frame rate to 90–120 FPS while diagnosing, as Nekro suggested. An uncapped frame rate can increase power, heat and shader pressure without fixing the underlying fault.
Reset the configuration after making a backup
Close the game and copy this folder somewhere safe:
%LOCALAPPDATA%CronosSavedConfigWindowsRename the folder, or rename GameUserSettings.ini, so the game creates clean defaults. This resolved a published Windows 11 crash loop involving an ultrawide display, FSR 3.1 and frame generation. Restore individual settings gradually; do not copy the old file straight back if it recreates the crash.
Repair runtimes and test compatibility mode
Install both Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributables (x86 and x64), reboot, and test again. Compatibility mode for Windows 7 or Windows 8 can be tried on both Cronos.exe and Cronos-Win64-Shipping.exe; revert it if there is no improvement. Page-file and power-plan checks are secondary options for the “An Unreal Process Has Crashed: UE-Cronos / GPU Crash Dump Triggered” message, not substitutes for a clean driver and valid game files.

What should I do for a specific crash message?
“EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION” at the main menu
Force -d3d11, disable overlays, clean-install the GPU driver, and move the game from an external drive to the internal C: drive. Once the menu works, cap FPS and turn off RT before testing DX12 again. This sequence addresses the DX12 menu reports collected by Steam users; it is not a Lazarus-specific diagnosis.
“An Unreal Process Has Crashed: UE-Cronos / GPU Crash Dump Triggered”
Use the same driver, overlay, overclock and config checks. Launching windowed with -d3d11 is a useful recovery test. If the message appears only with frame generation or RT, leave those features off and test the base upscaler first.
“Shader compilation failures are Fatal.”
Let the initial shader compilation finish, then restart after verifying files and removing overlays or mods. The exact warning was reproduced by Steam user Lors on 28 September 2025. A fatal shader error at a late “head for the terminal” sequence was fixed for two users by uninstalling RenoDX, so remove RenoDX, ReShade and similar injection tools before blaming the game or the upcoming DLC.

Crash while uploading the first phylactery
At the end of the first phylactery upload video, players reported crashes on AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 9070 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, and a 5090 laptop. The repeatedly reported workaround is to skip the video sequence. Developer Johanna requested dxdiag reports from affected players; follow the support procedure below if skipping does not work.
Ascendance crash or “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource”
PCGamingWiki documents recurring crashes in the Ascendance sequence at 21:9 and 32:9 resolutions. Switch temporarily to a standard 16:9 resolution, lower the resolution and RT quality, close background applications, or skip the sequence. The message itself says: “Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource. Make sure your video card has the minimum required memory, try lowering the resolution and/or closing other applications that are running.”
GameDecide describes a related first-Ascendance LowLevelFatalError involving D3D12Util.cpp and E_INVALIDARG. Treat a non-ultrawide resolution and RT-off settings as a workaround. Lazarus may contain new Bink videos, but no Lazarus cutscene failure has been verified before release.
How do I reduce stuttering after the game launches?
Base-game stutter has several overlapping causes, so apply the following in order: patch, RT off, stable driver, capped frame rate, borderless mode, then one upscaler at a time.

Steam user mrk reported repeatable shader-compilation stutter on an RTX 4090 and Samsung 990 Pro even after the boot-time precompile; revisiting the same area was smooth. That pattern is consistent with Unreal Engine shader work during traversal, not proof that an SSD is failing. An internal SSD is still preferable to an external drive, but storage alone cannot eliminate UE5 shader hitches.

Choose an upscaler without stacking risky features
PCGamingWiki lists DLSS 4 with CNN model preset E, FSR 3.1 and XeSS 2.1, plus DLSS and FSR frame generation options. Start with the vendor-matched upscaler at Quality or Performance and leave frame generation off. If colored squares, flashing or duplicated characters appear, switch to TSR or native resolution before testing anything else.
Steam user Aywar reported giant colored squares with DLSS, FSR and XeSS on a 5090/9800X3D, while TSR worked. Steam user Boss reported frame generation duplicating the character during camera movement. Those reports make TSR a useful fallback, not evidence that one upscaler is universally superior.
Reduce load without changing presets mid-scene
- Use Low or Very Low on mid-range hardware, with Anti-Aliasing set to None if necessary.
- Try Medium shadows and effects, and disable motion blur.
- Cap FPS and test VSync both on and off.
- Prefer borderless windowed mode if alt-tab causes a hitch or crash.
- Do not switch from Very Low to a higher preset during a scene; Hotfix 1 addressed Lumen GI artifacts after that transition.
GameDecide notes that some systems gain little from an upscaler, so compare frame pacing rather than assuming a lower internal resolution will cure every hitch. Digital Foundry’s published “Cronos: The New Dawn PC – DF Review – Double Performance via Optimised Settings” discusses animation-rate behavior; it should not be read as a universal FPS benchmark for every PC.

The official minimum and recommended memory requirement is 16 GB. One Steam-guide author, identified as risky, reported that a 16 GB system sometimes crashed after two to four hours and that 32 GB allowed sessions of eight hours or more. That is an anecdotal test, not a publisher statistic or laboratory result.
If your crash reliably appears only after a long session while memory use climbs, moving to 32 GB is a reasonable hardware experiment after the software steps above. It will not repair a bad save, a shader-injection conflict or a driver fault, and there is no published crash-rate percentage for either the base game or Lazarus.

Save blockers listed in Hotfix 1/1.005 were first-party compatibility bugs, not user mistakes. Update before attempting recovery, then preserve your existing files.
Back up the correct folders
On Windows, saves are stored at:

%LOCALAPPDATA%CronosSavedConfigWindowsCopy both locations to another drive before deleting configs, reinstalling, or loading an older slot. Steam Cloud is supported for the base game, but a local copy gives you a recovery point if cloud synchronization offers the wrong version. Whether Lazarus uses a separate slot or this same folder will not be known until the DLC ships.
Recognize the patched progression blockers
- The church bell-tower barricade would not open because of save compatibility.
- Church doors after the puzzle could remain blocked.
- The Pathfinder could disappear during a boss fight and stay missing after loading.
- Repeated save/load in Edward’s apartment could place an elevator panel in the corridor.
- Autosave could fail when entering the Apartment Zone (Past) basement.
- Autosave could fail after the Apartment Zone (Future) boss when the related achievement was already unlocked.
If one of these persists after updating, load an earlier autosave or restart the area. There is no published Cronos save-repair utility; avoid random save editors that can overwrite every slot.

How do I report a crash to Bloober?
When the ordered fixes do not help, send a complete packet rather than a one-line error description. Bloober developer Johanna and pinned developer Bloober_Luke give the same instructions.
- Press Win + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - Choose Save All Information and keep the generated text file.
- Capture a screenshot of the game’s visual settings.
- State exactly where the failure occurs: menu, phylactery video, Ascendance, a named room, save/load, or a particular DLC scene after release.
- Email the text file and screenshots to support@blooberteam.com. Include the storefront (Steam, Epic, GOG or another platform), Windows version, GPU, driver version, display aspect ratio and whether RT, frame generation or mods were enabled.
Bloober_Luke’s pinned support thread says, “If you experience any performance issues, please follow the steps below:” and “Our team will take care of your reports asap and work to provide improvements and solutions.” The official community Discord is https://discord.gg/blooberteam, but email is the channel specified for the diagnostic packet.
Which settings should I keep when Lazarus launches?
Use a conservative baseline for the first launch: current drivers, verified files, RT off, frame generation off, a capped frame rate, borderless mode, and the upscaler that behaves correctly on your GPU. After a stable save and a complete scene, re-enable one feature at a time.

The free Photo Mode update shown on Steam on 26 October 2026 demonstrates that the base PC build is still receiving updates close to Lazarus’ date. It is not itself a crash hotfix, so do not assume installing it resolves every stability issue.
What is still unknown about Lazarus?
No Lazarus-only crash rate, stutter rate, save-failure rate, error-code list or day-one patch note has been published. The expansion’s new Tracker encounters, Gladius weapon, teleportation and temporary Pathfinder-invisibility decoy may exercise different rendering and save paths. The first confirmed Lazarus release notes and player reports should take precedence over any base-game workaround that fails after 3 December 2026.

The base game can compile shaders while you traverse an area after the startup precompile, producing temporary hitches even on hardware such as an RTX 4090 with a Samsung 990 Pro. RT, overlays, uncapped FPS and frame generation can add further pressure.
